Me and dh are about to highlight my hair
I’m very worried
Please send good vibrations

I think MN became more dementory over the years anyway.

Instead of “m&s food hall had mini caterpillar cakes, are they any good?”. You need to leave several caveats and apologies along the lines of privilege of wealth/access to m&s/ability to drive to retail park/apology for not having diabetes/etc. Even then someone will pop up with 5000 words in haringey’s social housing policy. 😁

14 positive tests in Scotland. ERADICATE, ERADICATE. WE WILL ERADICATE.

Thanks @orange - I'm going to have a look and dream of being somewhere lovely. Also @seaotter - thread moves so fast - that tv show has really cheered me up of an evening. It's so silly. I've not been on here that long - maybe a couple of years? I don't post very often - but I especially liked there was a lot of intelligent debate on some posts. Of course others sometimes went totally mad... @dowser I saw my first david icke thing on london real. It does get a bit wierd with the lizard people Confused

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/06/2020 15:42

I'm thinking a niqab may be the way to go with masks.
You can fit a wine glass under one of those when we get restaurants back...

dkl55 · 22/06/2020 15:43

@insane GrinGrin the whole worlds becoming more and more like this.

Ibake · 22/06/2020 15:51

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane too true, how very dare I be able to afford M&S

@weeds I said this to a friend in all seriousness a few weeks ago. My reasons were that you wouldn't fiddle with it constantly unlike masks and that I wouldn't feel self conscious because no one would know it was me. I thought my idea was brilliant, I now realise how wrong I was given the op has royally had her ass handed to her on the niqab thread. That's the problem with everyone being so fucking woke these days. The alternative is beekeepers helmets with plastic instead of mesh. Essentially was just exploring better alternatives to masks but the niqab thing is too much of a hot potato!

SomewhereEast · 22/06/2020 15:52

15 deaths across the entire UK & infections below the thousand mark. Wonder how the dementors will spin the continued failure of beaches / garden centres / congregating teenages / IKEA queues to kill us all.

And yes Karen I know about the weekend lag.

SeagoingSexpot · 22/06/2020 15:53

15 (sadly) deaths and new infections below 1,000!!!

That is cracking news. That BLM protest second wave seems overdue, like all those other second waves, no?

I've got a couple of cloth masks which I bought when it became clear that they would become socially if not legally obligatory in certain settings, but I've yet to wear them. Every time I've been out and about, public and retail staff wearing PPE have been demonstrating why it's largely pointless if not counterproductive for people not rigorously trained to wear it. Pull mask down to speak, touch something, pull it back up, touch some more things, fiddle with it some more, pull your plastic visor with no mask underneath up to talk to a colleague...

Orangeblossom78 · 22/06/2020 15:54

I had that sort of thing..mentioned in a post on Sweden about how they had tried giving leaflets to some Somali areas. Got told I was being 'racist' Hmm and asked to explain myself. I was just commenting on their response but because I happened to mentioned something to do with race it was 'racist'!

Then i was told I should have said in my comment I was not being racist Confused and I should have commented negatively on the leafleting, rather than leaving it to others to make up their minds! It was exhausting.

torydeathdrug · 22/06/2020 15:54

very good news on the Sadly Daily today - fewer than 1000 positive tests too.

I observed so much counterproductive compulsory mask wearing on the buses - chin hammock while waiting at the the bus stop, pull up when boarding the bus, pull down under nose (or mouth if you want to eat/make a phone call), on disembarking either return to chin hammock position or rip off mask & chuck in on the ground Angry At no point during all of this up and down is there any hand sanitising. Constant contamination of hands & god knows what else. I don't do buses, they are filthy at the best of times & the masks aren't helping.

Town was busy, dd has spent her tax rebate Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 22/06/2020 15:56

It makes you feel you need to not comment on any sort of thing which might controversial and have very sort of bland conversation, or as above, excuse yourself and explain everything. Very wearing.

iamapixie · 22/06/2020 15:59

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane
Very true. I've been on MN on and off for about 12 years. Mostly off because of the ridiculous pile ons and yes, everything becoming a personalised attack on Why you would buy a caterpillar cake or whatever!
I came back because I wanted to see what 'other people' outside friends and family were thinking about Coronavirus (as it then was).
Ive just sneaked above the parapet on a thread where apparently if you discuss the validity of statistics it's because you ve never known anyone who's died, or you didn't care enough when your parents died.
I mean seriously, what a fucking horrible thing to say to someone.
Also I'm convinced of the opposite: the way some of these people fetishise death suggests to me they haven't dealt with much ill health or with deaths in their lives and have got all their views from the most sentimental chapters of Dickens.

Orangeblossom78 · 22/06/2020 16:00

Holland has been open for longer than us have a look not many new cases or rise there either - quite densely populated as well

Orangeblossom78 · 22/06/2020 16:04

iamapixie yes I tried talking about something factual and was asked 'how many did I want to die at no inconvenience to myself' Confused really horrible isn't it. MN did remove the comment but it was not pleasant.

Ibake · 22/06/2020 16:04

Exactly @orange and in fact counterproductive. If you want change it needs to come in large numbers. The BLM thing is a good example where the BAME community are saying that white people need to stop being passive and instead be anti-racist. I agree with this wholeheartedly but we do now live in this world where people are so terrified to say the wrong thing and get trolled (how do we learn if we're terrified to make a mistake?) that people stay quiet. And I've never seen anywhere quite like MN for absolute trolling and utter denunciation from the safety of an anonymous username. I choose to learn.

Cattermole · 22/06/2020 16:06

@Nihiloxica

Goths are the poster children for conformity.

Counter cultural conformity is still conformity.

A goth that wears pink and doesn't like the Sisters of Mercy, maybe. Although the Sister of Mercy are awesome, so there's that.

My ex husband used to have a little clique that he palled around with. (He was a goth - far as I know he still is...) He wanted to buy t-shirts for all his clique that said "You laugh at me because I'm different...I laugh at you because you're all the same"

He couldn't see why that was funny.
It's one of the reasons why he's my ex husband.

With the BLM thing I saw people getting torn down on Instagram for saying nothing, for posting a black square, for not posting a black square, for posting something else, for "drawing attention to themselves".

I am not racist whatsoever, however I made no public comment on my stance because I didn't want to be attacked for saying the wrong thing.

I think a lot more people would join in with the BLM movement when you weren't shouted at for being wrong no matter what you said.

iamapixie · 22/06/2020 16:10

@Orangeblossom78
I feel your pain. I pretty much never post unless it's to back up someone who has made a perfectly sensible point and then been accused of... Well, you know, stupidity, selfishness, murder, whatever.
I also always try and make any posts as bland as possible, partly to try and maintain the moral high ground, and partly to show that all discussion is not about one individual, so if you say that your grandma died of cancer that's not the same as 'and so Covid doesn't exist and your grandma doesn't matter as much as mine...' (though self evidently mine would matter to me rather more than unknown grandmother of unknown and rude MN poster! Which surely just makes me... Normal?! )

Worldgonecrazy · 22/06/2020 16:11

With regard to uniformity and conformity is that for anyone under the age of 30 there is nothing to rebel against.

Sex - their grandparents were the swinging sixties and free love of the pre-AIDS era.

Drugs - grandparents did weed, their parents did the ecstasy coke and raves

Goths and punks - ditto above

Maybe conformity IS their rebellion?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/06/2020 16:13

My caterpillar cake was a poor example. I would never ask anyone’s opinion as to whether I should buy a cake or not. My thread would more likely have been “I feel a bit sick and have eaten all 6 in the car park and hidden the wrappers before collecting my DC”. Chorus: I'm vegan and caterpillar cakes glorify industrial farming and cruelty/people have sadly died/dementorish whine.

Ibake · 22/06/2020 16:20

You lot are just so bloody funny.

It must be so bloody wearying to be worthy 24/7. I haven't got the energy to double check every thing I say and write. I like to think that my heart is mostly in a good place (exception: dementors) and so I'm unlikely to deliberately say something unkind. But also happy to accept that I might unintentionally mess up every now and again and happy to have someone gently correct me eg you lot but no way would I risk exposing myself to that lot.
