If you could live anywhere in the world for a year

No issue with money, you're in a gorgeous house/apartment/complex/ranch (whatever is appropriate for the destination) in a safe neighbourhood. You have an amazing job with decent hours, great holidays (so you can explore your destination) and good career progression if you do this year away. Oh and the money isn't bad.

All pre-covid world of course Wink

I'm currently thinking a 3 bed apartment in East Village, Manhatten. I keep swaying between that and something a bit more nature-y and exotic though...
A view of some sea or mountains would be good. Maybe I'll go more rural Canada.

The alps. Although thinking about it maybe only in the summer as I don't like snow.

cultkid · 20/06/2020 06:21

Lisbon

Strokethefurrywall · 20/06/2020 06:39

@allfurcoatnoknickers I live in Grand Cayman, have been here 13 years.

If you ever want to come for a year (or any time), let me know. It's fucking wonderful 👍🏼

JustJayne69 · 20/06/2020 06:59

I've worked in a few countries and although it was OK for a while I counldnt live there. Here are some reasons : Corrumption , I've been stopped by Police who demanded money. Police carry guns and in the US so do custom officers, security guards and immigration officials. If you want to experience racism go and live in Japan , they thing we smell because we don't wash. Sexism ? , try working in the Middle East , anywhere in the Middle East. A friend of mine was raped and she had to pay local officials before they would give her passport back so she could fly home. I was always glad to get back home. Marriage and children put paid to my globe trotting. It was fun but it wasn't a holiday. I met a lot of lovely people but I also met some real hostility. An Australian called me a pommy bitch and to fuck off back to my shitty little island. When I reported her she denied she'd even spoken to me. They immediately accepted her word and suggested I was making it up. Nice people. To live somewhere for a year maybe but take a lot of money with you coz that's what they'll want.

GADDay · 20/06/2020 07:30

We went globetrotting with our kids for a year. BEST thing I have ever done.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 20/06/2020 07:34

Paris or Florence. Been to both before and fell in love with them. Though my list would be endless as there are so many places I’d love to experience for a year

PurBal · 20/06/2020 08:06

It's something we are actually considering. We have both been working from home during lockdown and his company won't be returning to the office! I've lived in both South America and SE Asia and I'd love to go back to those regions (different county). DH is keen on southern Europe. We will see...

BMaman · 20/06/2020 08:38

The Orlando area.

Would need to research to be precise.

But genuinely I do want to live for a year there anyway once DC have flown the nest.

Rent a little place, maybe with a pool, have annual passes to all the theme parks.

Just going for holidays doesn't scratch the itch enough. I want to be a local for a little while.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 20/06/2020 08:46

Six months in NZ and six months in Singapore.

bert3400 · 20/06/2020 08:50

When the kids have left home me & DH plan to house swap for a year and live in as many places as we can, NY, Rio , Sydney ...I want busserling cities with great restaurants, night life and culture. We currently live on the coast of Spain in a beautiful villa but it's not city living. I think someone would enjoy a swapping for the peace . Not sure if the are any websites that facilitates this ?

RedRec · 20/06/2020 08:53

Los Angeles.

FraughtwithGin · 20/06/2020 09:53

@JustJayne69

wow, bitter much?
I have lived in Saudi Arabia, The Netherlands, Inodnesia, and Kazkhstan.
I have travelled and visited many more
All have pros and cons, but then funnily enough, so does the UK!

I love to spend longer periods of time in a place, get past the tourist part and try and understand how it works.

I would love to go bakc to Inodonesia with some money and time.
I'd love to visit China, Thailand, India, Ghana and Brazil, but not as a tourist, I love the idea of spending a few months in each.

however, right now, I would happily go ANYWHERE that the rest of my family aren't, and have nothing, go responsibilities, no work, nothing that I have to do. Just be. (I might take the dog, but then he would need walking, so unless it is on a mountain or by the beach, he will have to stay at home)

minmooch · 20/06/2020 11:44

On an estuary in Devon. Am working towards buying a place there so I can split my time but I'd love a year there starting tomorrow. In fact I'd drive there this afternoon if it were possible 😂

hellswelshy · 20/06/2020 11:55

A coastal property in the Algarve would1 suit me just fine Smile

Fartlek · 20/06/2020 12:22

Victoria, British Columbia. Mild winters, outdoorsy culture, on the coast, close to nature, first world country. All boxes ticked!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/06/2020 12:34

@Strokethefurrywall so jealous. I live in NYC now, but I told DH if he ever spots a finance job in Grand Cayman to apply immediately.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/06/2020 12:36

Copenhagen, I would need Danish lesson but that's OK.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/06/2020 12:39

@LightDrizzle I live in Manhattan. It's fab. Expensive, but truly fabulous.

Dicotyledon · 20/06/2020 12:56

The Fens

tinytemper66 · 20/06/2020 13:00

Madrid

bownfang · 20/06/2020 13:01

South Korea. A smaller city south of Seoul, maybe.

thatgingergirl · 20/06/2020 13:29

Palma, Mallorca - somewhere just along from the cathedral and looking out onto the bay.

fairydustandpixies · 20/06/2020 17:18

Reykjavik

House swap vacation once all this is over? NYC is our favorite city, was there a lot before lock down!

What does your DH do in finance? I'm a manager at a law firm, can keep ears to the ground once the world starts to open up again! Feel free to pm me!
