When I first read Harry Potter I thought it was 'hermy-own' - was gobsmacked when I heard how it was pronounced when the films started coming out! I also thought mirror of Erised was pronounced 'i-rye-sd'

7ofNine Is it the same pronunciation if you mean-
‘He bought flowers, what a lovely gesture’
And
‘’Piss off’, he said, with a rude gesture’

namechangecareerchange · 19/06/2020 18:55

What about Cobham and Chobham? The places. I still don't know how to say them!!

WWYD00 · 19/06/2020 19:00

I was quite a lazy skim reader as a teen and used to call dementors in Harry Potter d-terminators in my head. When my friend and I were discussing the books that's when I became unstuck realising I didn't have a clue what they were actually called.

Lozz22 · 19/06/2020 19:00

Sarajevo. I thought was pronounced Sarah-Jeevo. Thank fuck the teacher didn't make me read the first paragraph out first that day in history class!! 😂

MillicentMartha · 19/06/2020 19:09

I used to pronounce malevolent as mail violent. Blush

How is diaspora pronounced? Asking for a friend...

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 19:10

Yes, same pronunciation. I'd prefer the Thanks Grin

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 19:11

My DS pronounced ricocheted as "Rick rocketed" which was pretty cute (he was about eight).

octobersky19 · 19/06/2020 19:13

The ghost is clear

He's "swarmy"

My DH usually corrects me after I've usually publicly embarrassed myself, ahh.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 19/06/2020 19:14

When I was a child I thought pedestrian was pronounced ped es train ee an & Peugeot was pea got

DH calls quinoa kwin o a - I think it's just to annoy me though to be fair!

SunsetBeetch · 19/06/2020 19:14

I used to think awry was pronounced aw-ree. I'd only ever seen it written down.

Same!

MashedPotatoBrainz · 19/06/2020 19:20

I always thought the word tenterhooks was tenderhooks.

So did I, until approximately 15 seconds ago.

CodenameVillanelle · 19/06/2020 19:21

BabyLlamaZen · 19/06/2020 19:26

Oh god I've just remembered another! I went through a phase of naming every car type and I kept seeping lots of 'vulvas' (Volvo's). 😳 It took me a long time to understand why adults looked at me with horror.

spookybitches · 19/06/2020 19:26

I always thought melancholy was pronounced as mellan-cholly

BabyLlamaZen · 19/06/2020 19:27

candilemon · 19/06/2020 19:31

Oops. Stress on the ASP...🙂

Papergirl1968 · 19/06/2020 19:35

There’s a radio advert out at the moment that tells us we’ve been pronouncing Skoda wrong all these years. Instead of the first bit of it sounding like scone (whichever way you pronounce scone!) we should be saying Sshkoda. Or is it Sshoda? I can’t remember. But with a soft Ssh anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

SummerHouse · 19/06/2020 19:36

About eight months into motherhood this was an actual conversation with DP.
Me, "pass me the Muslim"
DP, "the what?"
Me, "the Muslim"
DP, "the what?"
Me, "the Muslim"
DP, "it's a muslin!"
Me, Shock

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 19/06/2020 19:38

I'm embarrassed to admit that I only found this out last week Hmm I always though the work albeit was pronounced al bite... I'd never said the word out loud but if I was asked to that it how I would have pronounced it

Another word I have issues with is philosophical. I know how to say it but I always have a mad urge to say Phil-os-if-ical.

FelicityBeedle · 19/06/2020 19:39

I thought I’d grown out of it but I got caught out yesterday with prairie talking to my mum, I was pronouncing it the same as Priory for some unknown reason

MillicentMartha · 19/06/2020 19:39

Thank you CodenameVillanelle!

SoftBlocks · 19/06/2020 19:39

Nugget is fine isn’t it!
I did use to say ‘hand gliding’ when I was a kid which is definitely incorrect.
