When I first read Harry Potter I thought it was 'hermy-own' - was gobsmacked when I heard how it was pronounced when the films started coming out! I also thought mirror of Erised was pronounced 'i-rye-sd'

Was convinced yacht was pronounced ya chet

dementedma · 19/06/2020 20:09

Segue isn’t pronounced Segway??

DD2 always calls the car windscreen the window screen

Like many I thought Hermione was Her-me -own

MillicentMartha · 19/06/2020 20:15

But biopic is short for biographical picture. Bio- Pic. How else would you pronounce it, to rhyme with myopic? Grin

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/06/2020 20:15

Segue is pronounced 'segway'.

MouseholeCat · 19/06/2020 20:15

ReMUNeration is not reNUMeration as I always thought. I figured since it referred to pay 'num' made sense.

I'm dyslexic so there are a lot of these in my life!

whatshebininagain · 19/06/2020 20:18

Funereal (fyoon-ee-rial). Until recently I thought it was "foonireel".

CodenameVillanelle · 19/06/2020 20:18

Yes exactly! Like myopic

I still think segue should be pronounced Seeg

I agree, if enough of us do it... Grin

weegiemum · 19/06/2020 20:20

I came on to say Ankansas as well.

I only realised the right way to say it when Bill Clinton arrived on the political scene and I was already most of the way through university studying Geography by that point!!

Destroyedpeople · 19/06/2020 20:25

I think it's segue to rhyme with seeg tbh but I have heard 'segway' as well so maybe it's alternative pronunciations.

When I was a despatch rider I told my mother I had delivered a package to the 'Go-eth' institute....she was a Germanophile so thought it funny.....I didn't know the guy was called 'Ger-ter'.......

whatshebininagain · 19/06/2020 20:26

This thread reminds me of the Peanuts strip where Linus is reading The Brothers Karamazov and Charlie Brown asks him if he finds the Russian names difficult. Linus replies, "Not really, I just bleep over them".

81Byerley · 19/06/2020 20:26

@Imissmoominmama eh-pit-oh-me

Destroyedpeople · 19/06/2020 20:27

@MouseholeCat...I always thought it was 'renumeration ' as well and not dyslexic. ..

IHateCoronavirus · 19/06/2020 20:36

My lovely neighbour pronounces safety as saf-uh-tee. As head of our neighbourhood watch scheme she talks about safe-uh-tee a lot. To this day I have failed to take anything of what she is saying in as I just become mesmerised by her pronunciation and the conviction in her voice.

Lexilooo · 19/06/2020 20:44

I heard two ladies looking at clothes recently and one said "here try on this gilet" except she pronounced it with a hard g and t almost like Gil-it.

Oh and on a podcast I listen to they were talking about Belvoir products and pissed themselves for about 20 minutes solid when it was pointed out to them that it is actually Beaver.

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:47

Segue is definitely seg-way. It's never been seeg.

Imissmoominmama · 19/06/2020 20:48

@Sidge- of course! 🤦‍♀️

mummyh2016 · 19/06/2020 20:49

I always pronounce quay like how it's spelt. When you work in an industry that deals with quays its a bit embarrassing Blush

Sidge · 19/06/2020 21:00

English language is a most confusing one.

Google The Chaos by Trenité just to see! Brilliant example.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 19/06/2020 21:09

Sidge is escalope not pronounced like envelope??

iklboo · 19/06/2020 21:09

Escalope is ess-cal-op

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/06/2020 21:23

I was quite old when I realised how Arkansas (the US state) is pronounced. Certainly over 30.

littlestrawby · 19/06/2020 21:32

My auntie was doing a bible reading in church and automatically pronounced 'misled' as 'misle-d'

My friend for some time thought niblets (as in sweetcorn) was pronounced 'niblaaay' and has never lived it down!

iklboo · 19/06/2020 21:50

A guy I used to work with called crudités 'crudities' - like sweaty carrot batons.

MeMeMeYou · 19/06/2020 21:52

When I was a kid I thought Alsatian was pronounced ‘alastin’ and trilogy was ‘trilology’!
