When I first read Harry Potter I thought it was 'hermy-own' - was gobsmacked when I heard how it was pronounced when the films started coming out! I also thought mirror of Erised was pronounced 'i-rye-sd'

OP posts:

Carousel... I was aware there was also a word pronounced carasel that meant the same thing, but I was embarrassingly old before I realised they were in fact the same word.

And yep, Arkansas as well

LauraChant · 19/06/2020 18:19

Draco was Dray Co until the HP films came out
I also had the Arkansas and Ar Kan Saw are two different places thing
When DS was little he asked me what kind of cake a stoma cake was. After much enquiry I realised he thought a stoma cake was what the Very Hungry Caterpillar rounded off his massive meal with. Rather than a stomach ache. That’s more mishearing than mispronouncing though!

LauraChant · 19/06/2020 18:20

Sorry, I mean I thought Draco was DraCo! Like dragon.

MaryBoBary · 19/06/2020 18:22

I saw the title of this thread and was about to write the same thing as you OP, I thought it was hermy-own and didn't believe my parents when they said I was wrong, I had to wait for the film to come out to prove it 😅

candilemon · 19/06/2020 18:22

When I was a child I pronounced Penelope, a character in one of my story books, as Penny Lope. 🙃

candilemon · 19/06/2020 18:25

merryhouse

Arkansas just pisses me off. There is no need for it. Why?

🤣

candilemon · 19/06/2020 18:26

Two of my favourite words are diaspora and detritus!

Elouera · 19/06/2020 18:26

The Essex town of Harwich- isn't pronounced HAR-WICH like sandwich, its H-ARIDGE!!! Confused

Leicester-isn't LI-CESTER, its LESTER!

CodenameVillanelle · 19/06/2020 18:26

Hyperbole is hy PER bollee

candilemon · 19/06/2020 18:27

The other two are minutiae and Anapurna. 😁

Bobbiepin · 19/06/2020 18:31

Achipalego. Pretty sure I've spelt it wrong too. Never get it right.

ginghamstarfish · 19/06/2020 18:39

Listening to an audio book today, a Jane Austen sequel type, quite nicely written but the person reading kept using wrong pronunciation, which really bugged me. Would be bad enough in a modern story but it really jarred - the words today were 'burgeoning' pron. burgoning, and 'incorrigible' pron. with a hard g sound. Don't they have some educated person check these things before recording, or check in a dictionary? It's a library audiobook, would be peeved if I'd paid for it.

Greenvalleymama · 19/06/2020 18:44

I pronounced meme as it's spelled with a group of friends, who howled with laughter and informed me it's pronounced meem 🤷‍♀️ Who knew!

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 18:45

Glib.
I always say it wrong and can't remember which way it goes. Comes from having read so much, but not having heard people say it.

I'm always going to pronounce Sophocles like bifocals from now on- I love Pigeon Post!

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 18:46

I thought Harwich was pronounced Horrich?

Liloandstitch · 19/06/2020 18:47

Restaurant near my home called Villagio - my 4 year old insists on calling it Fellatios

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 18:47

@NotVeryOldForASweatyBird Mi-shap is wonderful!

LochJessMonster · 19/06/2020 18:48

I still don’t know how to say ‘gesture’
Is it ‘jest-ure’ or ‘guest-Ute’

Tootytata · 19/06/2020 18:48

In my 20s I thought the name Siobhan was pronounced Si-o-ban until I heard someone else say it! Blush

LochJessMonster · 19/06/2020 18:49

*Meant to say-
jest-ure
Or
guest-ure

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 19/06/2020 18:49

@SoftBlocks

Growing up in the North I used to pronounce the word ‘nougat’ as ‘nugget’. I‘ve had the piss taken out of me for doing so by some Southerners but I still think ‘noo-gah’ sounds weird.
We always used to buy 'nugget wafers' from the ice cream van ( northern town)
Namechangex10000 · 19/06/2020 18:50

I’m from the south and pronounce it nugget to, I can remember how hilarious the person who corrected me thought it was!

Didn’t know that about segue or hyperbole either.....

7ofNine · 19/06/2020 18:51

It's Jess-chur lochjess

LochJessMonster · 19/06/2020 18:52

Thanks 7ofNine!

VictoriaBun · 19/06/2020 18:53

I always thought the word tenterhooks was tenderhooks.
