When I first read Harry Potter I thought it was 'hermy-own' - was gobsmacked when I heard how it was pronounced when the films started coming out! I also thought mirror of Erised was pronounced 'i-rye-sd'

Segue is pronounced Segway though isn’t it Confused

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 19/06/2020 19:43

@spookybitches

I always thought melancholy was pronounced as mellan-cholly
I thought it was? How is it pronounced?
Hotwaterbottlelove · 19/06/2020 19:43

I only learnt last month that Persephone isn't pronounced Purse-a-phone. I always wondered why people would pick a name that sounds like 'purse and phone'. Thank god I never said it out loud.

Bubbletrouble43 · 19/06/2020 19:43

I thought the French word gigue was pronounced with a hard g until earlier this year... I am in my forties and a music teacher and have taught hundreds of "gigues" for exam pieces over the years. Cringe.

ThreeCubesBalancing · 19/06/2020 19:44

@Bobbiepin

Achipalego. Pretty sure I've spelt it wrong too. Never get it right.
I can never ever pronounce that word. When I was reading the Wizard of Earthsea to the kids (set in a land called the Archipelago) I had to pause dramatically every time the word came up and let them say it. The same for the Book of Gramarye in The Dark Is Rising.

Well hand gliding makes perfect sense... as you hold on with your hands. It will always be hand gliding to me

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 19/06/2020 19:45

I thought game of thrones milk of the poppy was milk of the puppy. Dh corrected me yesterday Grin I thought milk of the puppy was weird tbh!

LidlDonkey · 19/06/2020 19:47

My DS, when very small, was playing a game of True or False. Except he kept asking us if it was True or Farsel. We still use it, 15 years on.

ladybee28 · 19/06/2020 19:48

Not quite the same, but my DP is not a native English speaker and often asks me to get something out of the 'glove department' of the car.

And when talking about people singing loudly he says they're 'belching it out', not belting.

I will NEVER tell him because they are some of my favourite things he says Grin

CodenameVillanelle · 19/06/2020 19:49

Melan-Kolly not melan-cholly

GreenLeafTurnip · 19/06/2020 19:51

Mine is grand Prix when I was a lot younger. You can imagine what I was actually saying.....I was quickly corrected by my parents!!

SouthCoastShell · 19/06/2020 19:51

One of my first jobs leaving school was in a female clothing store (Anyone remember Chelsea girl?) I used to show people where the 'lin ger ree' section was!

iklboo · 19/06/2020 19:53

Albeit is all-be-it

I thought laconic was lasonic (soft c) for years.

BIL3 calls peripherals 'perry ferals'

missmouse101 · 19/06/2020 19:54

Duchy of Cornwall is mine. I was never sure if it was pronounced Dooshie or not!

ZolaGrey · 19/06/2020 19:55

On a slightly different subject, I was 17 when I found out that the birds that were "hooting" in the daytime were pigeons, not owls...my dad laughed for a solid three days.

Northernsoullover · 19/06/2020 19:57

Can't beat we are four pages in and lingerie hasn't had a mention. I was in my late teens before I found out it wasn't ling ga ree! Luckily a few women at work were laughing at some other poor sod who mispronounced it out loud!

DuesToTheDirt · 19/06/2020 19:59

In hospital one time my mum was offered a "kwitch" (quiche).

Stabbitha · 19/06/2020 20:00

yearinyearout · 19/06/2020 20:01

Whenever I read the word misled, in my head it becomes "my zulled"

Imissmoominmama · 19/06/2020 20:02

@OneUsernameOnly- how is epitome pronounced?

sotiredofthislonelylife · 19/06/2020 20:02

I refuse to say biopic as ‘bio-pick’..... We don’t say eeepic, do we?

My daughter thought well flavoured cheese was maytured, but then that’s English for you. So many ways to pronounce similar letter groups!

Sidge · 19/06/2020 20:05

I thought escalope was pronounced like envelope.

And segue like seeeg. Not Segway.

When I did A level English lit and we were reading Midsummer Nights Dream I made a right tit of myself reading out loud that Bottom had an arse’s head instead of ass’s head. I was trying to be posh I think.

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:06

Epitome is eh-pit-oh-me

Sidge · 19/06/2020 20:07

@Imissmoominmama eh-pit-oh-mee
