At house parties there was always that one person in the long black coat who refused to take it off.

I went to reading festival in 1996!

QueenofLouisiana · 20/06/2020 21:55

Glastonbury 1997- total mudbath, my mum binned most of the stuff I brought home.
Wearing your boyfriend’s jumper over your slip dress on the way home from the student bar- bonus points if it was a uni sports team one.
Stopping at the 24hr garage for chocolate and condoms.
Wearing children’s t-shirts, my favourite was for a 5year old. I was 19 and wore it with DMs, a denim miniskirt and a wonder bra.
Velvet jackets.
Back combed hair and crucifix chokers.

Sidge · 21/06/2020 00:00

Combat trousers with my crop Little Miss Naughty t shirt.

Denim cut offs worn over opaque black tights and DM shoes, with a body. Nightmare going for a wee trying to do the between the legs poppers when you’d had four Smirnoff Ices.

Drinking snakebite and black which made your puke purple.

Snogging boys that smelled of Mandate and Drakkar Noir.

Silk shirts and waistcoats.

Early 90s club tunes are BANGING.

teardropsonthecity · 21/06/2020 10:00

My little brother being obsessed with Pogs and Tazos.

Now albums being a staple birthday/Christmas present (Now 32 was an absolute classic).

Being excited when I upgraded from Mizz to Sugar and Bliss (much to my mum's disgust). Anyone remember the drug adverts they had - half of the person's face was their face and then the other half was what their brain looked like after taking the drug? I'm worried I might have made this up as none of my friends can remember!

As a teenager, going to a family wedding dressed head to toe in Miss Selfridge. I was wearing a pair of peep toe mules with a block heel and I thought I was the dog's bollocks.

Had my first kiss aged 12 and remember really disliking it as the boy in question had just finished a Push Pop and it was all very sticky Grin

Going out all day during the summer holidays and not returning home until tea. No phones or even popping in to my house halfway through the day. I did grow up in a small and safe town but still, can you imagine that now?

letsgomaths · 21/06/2020 12:26

Tying trainer laces inside your shoes. It looked nicer than having the bows on the outside, but I found it uncomfy, especially if I was sockless.

BLack docs here with black and white laces! i too had the white lace dress with the top and shorts under it, i thought i looked the dogs whatsits when i was a bit chubby and looked like a tw*t haha.

I remember twist and shout juice and when Pepsi had a ring pull on the can that you peeled off, listening to nirvana or mariah carey on my walkman, just 17 magazine and long sunny summers. My hair was frizzy my eyebrows thin and my skin looked greasy from the rollerball glitter and charlie red skin softener. I owned a sweater shop jumper and a pair of kickers with heels.

At the end of the 90s i was hanging out in old man pubs drinking £1 pints of cider then walking up to the local indie nightclub in my flared cord pants and my band tshirt (usually pulp or smashing pumpkins). A pack of 10 cigs was £1.10 and some shops sold single cigs under the counter. i went out with a tenner and came back tipsy at 3am WITH CHANGE and my parents didn't care.

friends, eurotrash, big breakfast and clarrisa was on the telly with gladiators and blind date on a Saturday night. I count myself lucky to have been a teen and grown up in the 90s.

So much pure nostalgia! I actually feel really emotional reading this thread-you don't realise until looking back how amazing an era was or how much it meant to you

Siiiiigh!

LolaDarkdestroyer · 21/06/2020 16:04

Going up town on a night out at 16 with a fiver and blagging your way through the night!

AristotleAteMyHamster · 21/06/2020 16:18

The Sweater Shop
All the lads out clubbing in identikit orange shirts
Everyone having the “Choose Life” poster in their student hall rooms

Cam2020 · 21/06/2020 16:40

Mariah Carey
Avidly reading Point Horror books
A black skirt I had with a lace running up the back worn with Doc Martens
Brit Pop

The one old man's pub on town that let 15 year old in

Happy days!

People weren't so offended about... EVERYTHING!!

sexyomelette · 21/06/2020 16:45

No problems getting into bars or nightclubs from the age of 14, fake ID not needed. Crazy thinking how lax it was.

You couldn't go to clubs in trainers though you to wear ugly smart shoes, loafers were a popular choice for the boys.

sexyomelette · 21/06/2020 16:54

Smoking inside clubs and pubs
Malibu and coke
Blur and Oasis
Haddaway, 2 Unlimited and Ace of Base

Belly button piercings ( a bar with a coloured gem inside)
Barry M nail polish
Colourful and glittery eye shadows
Overly plucked eyebrows
Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil
Strappy tops, black trousers and heels

Sugar and Bliss magazines

GhostTypeEevee · 21/06/2020 17:52

Getting a child's return bus ticket to put local pub on Friday and Saturday night. The whole pub, including normally the band, must have been underage

GhostTypeEevee · 21/06/2020 17:53

@sexyomlette and no jeans where I was either

mogloveseggs · 21/06/2020 17:56

Working in the local and getting paid £15 for the week! Spent most of it on pay day in the local Grin

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/06/2020 17:56

Havent rtft but:

Yes this!! I've often said to my kids that I'm so glad I grew up in the 90's. Its definitely helped me have a thicker skin.
RLABC · 25/06/2020 22:02

@HoHoHolyCow Yes! I was at Reading '96! I fell in love at first sight (never spoke to him!) with a mixed race guy with long dreadlocks and wearing just a blue/white tie-dye sarong at the garlic bread van 💗
I also had my first ever nose piercing there late in the afternoon on the last day. Next afternoon, at home, I blew my nose and the stud came out. Myself and my friends tried to put it back in for hours but it was just too painfull 😱
