At today's briefing, definitely not himself.

I honestly think he is just useless at this. Far far more useless than I ever thought he would be, because there's no doubting he is an intelligent man

Is he really an intelligent man, or do people just think he is because he went to Eton, speaks with a posh accent and spouts random Latin phrases?

I thought he was supposed to be a great speaker, but all I hear is waffle and umming and erring. He rarely actually answers a question and definitely can't think on his feet.

Rhine · 17/06/2020 10:16

I'm just glad they got a majority, imagine Corbyn and Abbott trying to string a sentence together in a global emergency.

Oh not this whataboutery nonsense again. How anyone else would have done is irrelevant. The fact is the person running the country has been completely is incompetent.

Corbyn isn’t even Labour leader anymore BTW. Maybe try watching the news sometime.

Cailleach1 · 17/06/2020 10:18

Well! I'm sure they could read from a script, too. I would have expectations that, when going off script, they could manage more than "er, er uh, er mm ah er uh eh ah er ah er ah eh ah benvenuti tutti ah ah ah ah. It is not a high bar and they don't also have the mendacity (this is important) or even the level of incompetent as Johnson. Remember Johnson supported going on a 60 mile drive as a way to test eyesight. Grant Schapps (or should I say Michael Green) would bring more integrity to the job. Thankfully Starmer has stepped up.

FliesandPies · 17/06/2020 10:22

Yes, what do people mean by his 'intelligence'? Surely intelligence is about your thinking skills, your judgement, ability to plan and, if you're a leader, to delegate in an effective way. He's not intelligent.

I think he might have stood down by now if it wasn't for Cummings - Cummings wants Brexit and Johnson isn't going anywhere til it's 'done'. Cummings doesn't want it for the glory of course, just for the power and disruption.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/06/2020 10:22

Yeah, just imagine if we had a Home Secretary that can’t read big numbers from a script and wants to get rid of counter-terrorists.

Oh, wait a minute Smile

HildaTablet · 17/06/2020 10:23

I thought the shambling, incoherent bluster was an act but it appears not to be

Oh, he turns it on when he wants to, Also. Did you read Jeremy Vine's experience of being a speaker at a corporate event where Johnson (before he was London Mayor) was also booked to speak, no doubt for a fat fee?

He lurched in late, literally moments before he was due on, in apparent panic and seemingly unaware of who he was due to address. No speech prepared. Demanded pen and paper, scribbled a few incomprehensible lines with only the words SHEEP and SHARK readable, then his name was called and he bumbled onstage, forgetting to take the paper.

Vine watched in agony, expecting him to fall flat on his face - but no. Old de Pfeffel had the crowd in stitches despite openly failing to know what the organisation was called, umming and erring constantly, telling incomprehensible anecdotes (featuring SHEEP and a SHARK), and ended with a joke to which he forgot the punchline. Everyone lapping it up and in ecstasies with good old Boris.

But then, over a year later, Vine was compering another event and asked who else was speaking. 'Boris Johnson'. You can guess the rest....it was an exact replay of the first scenario, right down to the panicky late arrival, no script, SHEEP and SHARK, ummm, errrrr, forgotten punchline.....

This man is deeply calculating. Trouble is, events have overtaken him this time and he's discovering that his SHEEP and SHARK act can't get him out of it. So I reckon we're experiencing genuine panic from the great entertainer.

jasjas1973 · 17/06/2020 10:24

Well, despite being in the at risk category but still helping with delivering food and med's to vulnerable people in his area, Corbyn managed to avoid catching CV, something that oaf johnson couldn't with his "of course i shake the hands of sick patients, absolutely, all of them!" and just to make sure, he took his pregnant GF to a ruby match, after making sure the rest the country got it by allowing mass events to go ahead and not shutting our borders........

but Corbyn would be worse!!! ffs.

FliesandPies · 17/06/2020 10:24

And afterwards he'll just walk away, into the sunset, back to his life of privilege. Without a care in the world

The way he's going the name of Boris will forever be attached to catastrophic failure and economic misery. He will care about that, even if he doesn't suffer the consequences personally, because he will want to have been the best PM evah!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/06/2020 10:28

'I would have expectations that, when going off script, they could manage more than "er, er uh, er mm'

He's not always overly articulate I agree, however if we are going purely on public speaking capability then Starmer with that awful nasal whine doesn't do any better. Johnson always looks like a head teacher telling off a very naughty boy in the Commons.

The80sweregreat · 17/06/2020 10:28

It's always the same on any political forum or whatever for people to say ' thank goodness that Corbyn or Abbott wasn't in charge!'
Who knows what they would have done?
It's like me saying that Theresa May would have handled it all better. Nobody knows really. A few of Johnson's colleagues have done their best and I'm impressed with the chancellor's actions , but I'm aware many others , such as our own PM , could have done better.
It would have been tough for any government to get exactly right. NZ have but they stopped all the flights and have a smaller population ( not that I'm sticking up for our government here , but each country is different)
The ' whataboutery' stuff is easy to do on the Internet. It does not change anything.
Corbyn wasn't in charge here! It's all relative as they say.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/06/2020 10:34

"Johnson always looks like a head teacher telling off a very naughty boy in the Commons."

Nope - he looks like the naughty boy, who's just eaten the contents of Sqibbling Minor's tuck box and quaffed the Latin master's sherry.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/06/2020 10:35

'it would have been tough for any government to get exactly right. NZ have but they stopped all the flights and have a smaller population'

Exactly! Very easy with a tiny, spreadout population. If Jacinda herself was in charge here, in a densely populated travel hub she'd no doubt have followed the same scientific advice and be in the same situation.

Alsohuman · 17/06/2020 10:39

Starmer with that awful nasal whine doesn't do any better

Starmer is succinct, forensic, calm, measured and articulate. He eviscerates Johnson each and every Wednesday. What with that ridiculous comment about Corbyn and Abbott, your Tory delusion is on clear display here. I’m so surprised Johnson still has defenders. Even the usual fan girl suspects haven’t shown up here.

Cailleach1 · 17/06/2020 10:40

So ug ug ug benvenuti tutti ug ug ug is equivalent to Starmers articulate and fluent delivery. Oh dear. And the mendacity? To be admired as well?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/06/2020 10:44

'Nope - he looks like the naughty boy, who's just eaten the contents of Sqibbling Minor's tuck box and quaffed the Latin master's sherry.'

Grin

We'll have to agree to disagree, Johnson booming and practically saying wtf at Starmers 'I've written you another letter!' whining is amusing.

'Starmer is succinct, forensic, calm, measured and articulate. He eviscerates Johnson each and every Wednesday. '

Oh not forensic please. We must be watching something different, he wangs on for half an hour with hard stares yet makes a tit of himself repeatedly when Johnson says 'we talked about this on the phone and you agreed!'

I'm not a 'fangirl'. Don't be so misogynistic.

The80sweregreat · 17/06/2020 10:47

I'm a labour supporter but I don't like Starmer. I feel his a bit reluctant at times and letting Marcus Rashford do his job for him at the moment as well! I hoped Lisa Nandy would be the leader so maybe I'm a bit biased.
I also am not a Tory supporter , but I still believe any government would have struggled with this pandemic in the UK.
Johnson isn't up to the job but it's all we have for now so we have to try and make the most of it. I think the school problems will cause many to turn their backs on the government as that is an issue they can't seem to get a handle on that well. It's a tough call.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/06/2020 10:48

Amusing?!

If you honestly can't see that him stamping his feet like a toddler every time he's exposed as a lazy tosspot who's ignoring his obligations, then we'll never see eye to eye. It's about as amusing as cancer, frankly.

jasjas1973 · 17/06/2020 10:51

yet makes a tit of himself repeatedly when Johnson liesand says 'we talked about this on the phone and you agreed!'

FTFY

Stuffofawesome · 17/06/2020 10:52

Maybe he needs a makeover? twitter.com/defencedailyuk/status/1272978310058905601?s=12

7ofNine · 17/06/2020 11:00

I just want someone competent, intelligent and grown up in charge

Is there actually anyone competent in the whole of the cabinet?

@SabrinaThwaite you made me laugh! Grin

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 17/06/2020 11:01

PMQs with Boris is so much him turning round looking for the cheers from his party behind him but they aren't there

When politicians start using the personal insults like Boris does after about the 3rd question from KS they have lost their argument IMHO

TM did it as well

We are back to the WEAK & WOBBLY of TM

His not wanting to answer the hard questions at select committee zoom and saying he would be too busy for another one before they break up was shocking

I really really wish he had had to be sitting at that table with committee without DC sitting next to him giving the answers off camera

If it is true he hasn't been to cobra meetings then obviously really bad too

happinessischocolate · 17/06/2020 11:05

We'll have to agree to disagree, Johnson booming and practically saying wtf at Starmers 'I've written you another letter!' whining is amusing.

It's PMQ it's not supposed to be fucking amusing!! Boris needs to realise he's not on HIGNFY anymore

randomer · 17/06/2020 11:07

Can you think of an example from your own life where you have made a mistake? How did you feel? In my case, mortified, crushed, contstantly turning it over in my mind.
Can you think of a time when you were ill prepared, out of your depth, winging it? In my case, embarassed, foolish.

Why does this person not experience these emotions and act upon them? I can only assume he is a seriously damaged ammoral individual and possibly some sort of addict.

As for Corbyn and Abbott and what they might have done.....not really of any relevance is it?

mbosnz · 17/06/2020 11:08

Exactly! Very easy with a tiny, spreadout population. If Jacinda herself was in charge here, in a densely populated travel hub she'd no doubt have followed the same scientific advice and be in the same situation.

Very easy? I think that's overstating it a little. She had to get both Government and the entire population on side and on song. This is in a coalition Government, remember, under MMP. Her coalition partner is New Zealand First, which is very much a to the right of the centre party, and conservative. Not a First Past the Post majority Government.

It would be disingenuous to think that the leaders in both countries are not informed by their upbringing, their personal histories, their education, their personal philosophies and characters.

One thing I can't imagine Ardern doing, is announcing without any warning or consultation to those involved in the management and provision of Education, that schools were now going to be open, for example. Or using education and teachers as a political football and punching bag.

See the usual crowd is in.
