Scottish folks, what's the situation with childcare over the holidays for you? Are hubs staying open for keyworkers as I'm guessing holiday clubs aren't happening as you break up for summer soon? Just curious as Boris has said schools won't stay open here but also no proper guidance for holiday clubs and as bakewell said up thread, this is leading to some schemes cancelling already.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/06/2020 08:41

My area came up with.......2....yep 2 out of 8 villages, 3 of which are quite large.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 16/06/2020 08:43

I’m sorry I don’t have any info about summer clubs, I usually make use of “book by the day” outdoor activity centres. You know, murderous stuff like den-building, animal-tracking and paddle-boarding and lazy beach and river days.

This summer looks like 14 hour days arguing about why EVERYONE ELSE is allowed to play fortnite and they’re not. Stay safe kids!

MagdaS · 16/06/2020 08:44

We had the skin to skin thing in our risk assessment at work and after some bafflement as we don’t tend to touch each other decided it meant hand shaking.

SockYarn · 16/06/2020 08:46

@rookiemere she took the decision to stop - she's had health issues of her own in the past, cares for an elderly relative and brings her DD with her when she cleans during the holidays. So we agreed between us taht I would leave it entirely up to her when she wanted to get back.

countrygirl99 · 16/06/2020 08:56

That poster on the shopping thread reminded me of DHs great Aunt. Nothing was so good she couldn't make a negative comment about it, a sunny day would be " the garden will pay for it" or "it will rain later". The mildest sniffle would get " let's hope it doesn't run to your chest/ kidneys/ liver".

rookiemere · 16/06/2020 08:58

Littlebelina got the message a few weeks ago that ours our only available to key workers DCs . I really relied on the schools sports camps to get DS out of the house and he really enjoys them. I had hoped there was a way for them to operate outside with reduced numbers but apparently not.

Again two tier system where key workers DCs get to interact with their peers and exercise,DPs have childcare. For rest of us - and key workers now pretty redundant as most folk at work - our DCs can continue to fester.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/06/2020 08:59

It’s a real shame that the shopping thread finished before Bicester village hit the news

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 16/06/2020 09:03

Take a look at kings camps for summer care kingscamp.org

I've just had confirmation that my local one in chester is definitely open for the summer. Gotta book full weeks and no odd days. They accept childcare vouchers too.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 16/06/2020 09:08

Gonna need a new thread today!

NothingIsWrong · 16/06/2020 09:10

I'm off to the tip, anyone need anything taking with me?

BarkandCheese · 16/06/2020 09:11

Good morning murderers! I suppose nothing today is going to top yesterday’s shoppers thread, but I’m ever hopeful.

This from the BBC today www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-53049127. Mostly unsurprising but still stark to see the numbers laid out. One thing I did find surprising was the regional divide, with children in London and the SE on average getting more work. I’m in the SE with a y7 child and she’s getting around four hours of work a day. I naively assumed all schools were doing roughly the same thing and the issue was with lack of tech and engagement not that they were setting minimal work.

Shodan · 16/06/2020 09:16

@NothingIsWrong I have some broken fencing in my front garden, if you wouldn't mind... Grin

Has anyone started a new thread yet?

TheGreatWave · 16/06/2020 09:17

That article was very interesting. I was a little disappointed that there was no real exploration of why parental involvement is low, especially in regards to things like, parents are often still trying to work or lack of skills and knowledge to assist.

Very worrying though and very much flies in the face of "but they will just catch up."

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 09:18

The grand total of two here in this postcode.

Littlebelina · 16/06/2020 09:18

Ours is saying they will open and nothing about keyworkers only (yet). We could play the keyworker card anyway but as rookiemere says it's not really fair that it's only been offered to some. Really hoping it does run as 3 or so weeks with proper working day hours of childcare would be fantastic plus it's good for ds.

Was just curious about situation in Scotland (we are about as far away from Scotland as we can be on mainland uk) as they are closer to end of term so wondered if anything had been done!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/06/2020 09:24

NothingIsWrong

I've got an old curtain rail and a broken down wooden bed, seeing as you're heading that way.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/06/2020 09:24

One thing I did find surprising was the regional divide, with children in London and the SE on average getting more work.

That chimes with what our friends accross the counrty were saying.
30h week school work friends were SE - the parents we knew insisted everything was fine elsewhere based on their experiences despite several other sof us pointing out we were getting no where near that.

The whole article has nothing surpisng in or that I hadn't seen else where- but few weeks ago saying anything like that on here and you were bashing teachers.

BarkandCheese · 16/06/2020 09:27

Short of going to a private school my DD is about as privileged as you can get education wise. She has her own desk and computer (thanks to DH’s company’s policy of selling off their old tech at ridiculously low prices) her school is a grammar and she’s very self motivated, but even with all that I don’t see how she’s going to catch up on half a year out of school. If she can’t with all her advantages how the hell will a child who’s barely engaged with their school and whose main form of tech is their phone?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/06/2020 09:28

Gonna need a new thread today!

It's surely got to have shopping in the title.

Worldgonecrazy · 16/06/2020 09:30

Was there an article last week about the number of deaths where people had died of Covid separated from those who had died with Covid?

KaronAVyrus · 16/06/2020 09:32

My son has been doing an hour a day for the past 3 weeks. That’s when the school started providing work and that is all they are providing!
I’m not helping him with much because he is 15yrs and what I know about computing, physics and chemistry you could write on a matchbox.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/06/2020 09:33

We a tech savy household - so have enough computers and laptops - older two have desks in their rooms - but younger two work in kichen so I can keep an eye on them and we haves some time and some money for extra resources.

They are pretty good work wise - but have needed an eye kept on them and frankly to do much more than the school has set - especially our Y10.

But I'm still worried and they are definetly in a more privileged position than many at their school.

ThatLibraryMiss · 16/06/2020 09:39

From another thread, I assumed people were taking their temperatures quite regularly and alert for symptoms. Clearly I'm wrong!

Yeah, love, you are. Bloody hell. Last time I checked my temperature quite regularly was when I was trying to conceive DD, 30 years ago.

And from this thread, NZ is ‘interesting’ - what exactly did they THINK was going to happen?

Indeed. They had to either stay isolated forever or accept that they’ll get cases once they allow people to come in. Even with stringent checks at Immigration a few cases will slip through. The only way to stop them would be quarantine, and that’ll be bye bye tourism, so long economy.

NothingIsWrong · 16/06/2020 09:41

@Shodan on my way to collect! Shall I do some murdering for you while I'm there?
