@BarkandCheese

HauntedGoatFart, I saw you on that thread, you got told to fuck off by a particularly smug poster, whose medal is undoubtedly in the post.
Yup. Not just staying at home but staying at home sewing PPE for Our Heroes. (Is it me, or is home production and sewing of gear that gets worn for one patient and chucked a hopelessly inadequate and inefficient means of production that is more about symbolism than actual need?)
Bollss · 15/06/2020 09:05

@allyjay

Apologies if this has already been mentined but I really hope that Rishi doesn't cave into Nicola's demands for furlough to be extended. Whilst I think furlough has been a very good thing and has prevented (hopefully) more redundancies than would have been the case, I can't help but feel that by extending it, it'll be more reason for schools not to reopen. More people sat at home on 80% pay, more reason not to send the kids back. In my opinion employers need now to be forced to get their workers back in (do away with the 2 metre rule!) and then maybe all those on furlough will want and need the schools to reopen and the tide will fully turn.

What do others think? Am I being unreasonable?

This is not a furlough bashing post by the way, I'm fully in agreement with it, just not in agreement with it being extended again.

Absolutely agree. Should only be extended for industries that remain forcefully shut (theatres and the like)
TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 15/06/2020 09:06

Rarrrrrrrr. Sometimes you need a really good wail don't you? The misery on some of the other threads. People STILL predicting spikes based on protests or barbecues or beach visits despite the fact we can see figures going down.

I see on FB there have been several massive illegal raves over the weekend (up to 6000 people at one). I'm glad they've broken out and had some fun but they seem to have left the places in an absolute state with plastic and needles everywhere among other things. So I'm not cheering them on to quite the same degree. It just shows you can't lock people up forever though.

I am going to try to go to my lovely independent bookshop this week and see how much in the way of browsing and mooching I can do while there. I will buy a book or two to support them but it's the experience of just taking my time and savouring the atmosphere I want to go back to.

AnxiousElephant77 · 15/06/2020 09:12

@TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair I agree, I can't help wondering whether the current protests and raves and the like are a consequence of lockdown, at least in part for some opportunists. Again, not saying anything about the legitimacy of the protests.

My gs is from a family who are just getting by financially.
There’s not a a dime to spare and my ds will be a student himself from September.
My gs has decided that he will defer uni if all of this is still around next September 2021

£9k on fees and same on maintainance grant...£18 k Of debt for one year..to do what exactly
He’s worked all his life for this.

I’m so sad. He’s a grade A student, he really deserves his chance.
Wonder how you go about a scholarship ?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/06/2020 09:17

@DominaShantotto

As they’ve expanded the intake today the junior school, previously fairly relaxed, has gone into full crazy mode allocating the kids numbers they must stand and sit on. I’m angry but can’t challenge it too much as dd is only in as a favour to us not coping. I don’t quite know what to do really.
She how she copes it it all - there may be no issue and it may well calm down once they get used to the new numbers attending.

If she is upset then approach them with specifics and see where you end up.

I'm still waiting to here what's been planned - they have this week then they're supposed to be back in we lucky we can be very flexible but I'd have thought we'd have heard more than vauge possible days for secondary and nothing for primary.

Dowser · 15/06/2020 09:18

I’m on the naughty chair.
I’ve had one of my comments deleted.
As a prolific commentator on this thread, I have no idea what rule I have unwittingly broken
Sending me to a list of guidelines does not help.

So now, I might unwittingly do it again.

BarkandCheese · 15/06/2020 09:18

Is there still a need for homemade scrubs? Back at the beginning I looked into helping to make scrubs but they only wanted sewers with overlocker machines, which I don’t have, because the scrubs needed to be up to daily hot washing. This wasn’t for hospitals but GPs too. Surely the system is now awash with homemade scrubs or are they actually chucking them after every wear?

Bollss · 15/06/2020 09:20

@Drivingdownthe101

Both DD’s back at school today, woo!
Excellent driving. DS went back to nursery today. I was a bit worried he'd be upset as it's been so long and I had to drop him off at the door. Nope, walked in confident with a smile to one of the lovely staff. As I was leaving I noticed one of his friends walking in and he'd mentioned wanting to see her on the walk there so he'll have been totally chuffed.
MagdaS · 15/06/2020 09:20

Much as I would love to be young enough to go to an illegal rave, it did disrupt mine and many of my colleagues weekend having to deal with the consequences.

But if you are going to lock young people up and close down bars and nightclubs, this is what is going to happen.

DrearyWallAntler · 15/06/2020 09:22

I see I got beaten to it - but the phrase 'reasonably practicable' is where its at.

Working in construction by far the safest way would to be not build anything at all. However that is patently insane.

It has become clear over the last few weeks is that the restrictions imposed are just as patently insane.

Above link explains many of the issues with fiance and possible areas of help then has link to below in it.

This is a more general guide
www.moneysavingexpert.com/funding-uni/

If the family income is low GS should be able to borrow more and epect less finacial help from parents - though DH and I come from a debt adverse background but I think some debt these days is unavoidable.

Grin

That is the logic of lockdown.

Doing stuff = risk
Ergo, don't do stuff

Ignoring all the while that
Not doing stuff = risk

Confused
Ibake · 15/06/2020 09:28

@Dowser congratulations! That is what I call a result. Maybe they've got you down as some sort of drug pusher/terrorist?! I've been fascinated reading about all your natural remedies, especially the colloidal silver one, it was so fabulously 'sciencey' (I am most definitely not a scientist and was crap at school)

Cattermole · 15/06/2020 09:29

So the Junior Mole's HT has managed to acquire an overspill venue and he reckons year 5 will be open for business from next week.
I do not say that to be smug. I say that because every single snowflake together makes an avalanche...

dingit · 15/06/2020 09:31

Dowser some Universities give grants for different reasons. Eg first child at university £1000, or AAA, £1000.
I was chatting to one of dds friends this weekend ( he's just finished placement year). He said he's learnt more this year than his two years previously at uni and if he could turn back time would have done an apprenticeship.
So tell him not to rule that out ( my ds is doing one too although because of lockdown has not been there for 3 months 🙄)

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/06/2020 09:32

Just me and the 17 month old at home today... what can we do? Ah I forgot... nothing, as children should still be neither seen nor heard!

That's brilliant news. Well done that man and everyone else involved. Every school that does this will help an increasing number of children and their families.

I'm pleased for anyone who gets the kids back to school.

snowflake together makes an avalanche... can't deny I hope it adds to the pressure to get them all back receiving a decent education.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/06/2020 09:35

Cattermole that's great! Like you say, bit by bit.

Dropped yr1 DD off for her first day back this morning. She was so happy. Not her normal teacher or classroom but 8 lovely girls in her bubble (and one very outnumbered little boy!) so I think she'll be fine. Some tape marks on the area around the drop off door but dementoring seemed to be minimal. Whoo hoo!

Construction here as well - ALARP is very basic. I do work on school sites, where we have to work around children being in close proximity - we just have to manage or how would be maintain and improved school sites?

I'm very close to throwing in the towel on my job and just accepting that I am a second class citizen because I have a vagina. It's fucking shit and I'm desolate, but it would be the best thing for the family as a whole. Just not best for me. And now I feel selfish for not wanting to the best thing for my family.

@PickAChew I also rely on quick fire questions to colleagues, collaboration round tables etc, and we are completely hamstrung.

DrearyWallAntler · 15/06/2020 09:39

I did a degree apprenticeship before they were cool.

13/10 - Highly recommended.

You're not selfish. Is a miserable parent what's best for your family? No!
Youre just as important as everyone else. Don't make any rash decisions just yet..

I don't know this reference. Tell me more.

Cattermole well done to that Head.

He makes other schools and their leaders look shite by comparison. Which is why I assume there was a lot of pressure on him not to do it.
