Working in construction by far the safest way would to be not build anything at all.

People DIE working in construction 🤷🏻‍♀️

Living in a house is the same as being a murderer.

The Morandi bridge collapse in 2018 highlighted chronic under investment in public works and the perils of neglected maintenance in changing conditions

Allflightscancelled · 15/06/2020 09:54

dingit totally agree. Degree apprenticeships aren incredibly good idea. Sadly, they don't exist in the kinds of areas DD wants to do, but if you are doing something tech-y or science-y they are there, you get on the job practical experience and you come out with money in the bank (and often a job) instead of masses of debt around your neck.

Dowser I've no idea which of your comments was pulled, and certainly not why, but I just wanted to say 'well done'.

Ah, interesting.

The problem was really building a bridge in the first place. That's where they went wrong here. Wink

Currently ruminating on risk and our attitude to it. I'm a 70's kid so obviously was raised part feral. Have got 2 boys who fell out of a lot of trees growing up but eventually worked out which ones were safe. As a society we have taken away personal risk assessment and made decisions for people (I'm not arguing against HSE just think the pendulum swung too far). Anyway, the dementors, they're hysterical and just can't see reason but is it a consequence of their upbringing and the fact they aren't asked to ever judge a situation for themselves? Hope I'm not being too contentious and 'snowflake bashing' am just interested to see what you think?

beenandgoneandbackagain · 15/06/2020 10:15

I’ve come out of lurkdom to say thank you to the anti dementors for keeping me sane.

This is my username of several years, I didn’t know at the time I chose it that it would prove so prophetic.

I can’t understand why people are explicitly told they have been manipulated to be scared and just shrug. I am bloody fuming.

I live with a shielded person and she is as rebellious as me and has murdered many people on her trips to the garden centre.

Allflightscancelled · 15/06/2020 10:17

Oh FFS!!!!

I've got a small flat in a block of about 12 in Dorset. I'm on the management committee. A flat owner who isn't a permanent resident (like me) has just asked the property manager if we're going to provide hand sanitiser for residents and tradespeople so he/she can safely come down when restrictions are lifted. Property manager has asked the committee for its views. You won't be surprised to hear that mine were robustly negative Hmm

HesterShaw1 · 15/06/2020 10:17

Yes to the peer reviewed thing. It makes me want to hit the poster who trots it out. A few weeks ago in the CV topic, there was a supreme Dementor in Chief who appeared to come on threads merely to piss on people's chips. She'd demand a peer reviewed paper to back up anyone's opinion which didn't match with hers. She would aggressively put down anyone who didn't agree with her then crawl up the arse of the few people who did agree with her. There were a lot of Hmm faces involved. Haven't seen her around as much lately.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/06/2020 10:19

Most of the banging on about ‘peer review’ on mumsnet is on threads about breastfeeding. I haven’t been on one of those for years

Orangeblossom78 · 15/06/2020 10:20

Mine both back in school today. Listening to radio 6 music which is really good today with its cloudbusting music. Maybe the Prozac is kicking in

Allflightscancelled · 15/06/2020 10:22

Sorry, I just posted my annoyance kin the middle of a convo. Blush

Completely agree, people don't seem able or willing to assess their own risk levels. They'd rather just be told what to do and then meekly go away and accept it. And heaven forbid that anyone has an individual take on things! And this is weird, because schools are supposedly all in favour of collaborative working these days, because it brings fresh ideas to the table. So that's an education policy that isn't working then.

DrearyWallAntler · 15/06/2020 10:23

Unless someone can confidently explain a monte carlo and censoring then their opinion will be taken with mahoosive truckload of salt. Scientist or not.

HauntedGoatFart · 15/06/2020 10:27

Help me, I just... Keep.. taking the bait on the shopping thread Grin

Incidentally, DS came over shy and tearful on the entry into school this morning and his TA came straight to him to cuddle him and lead him in by the hand, so definitely looks like my school isn't doing anything daft with social distancing.

rookiemere · 15/06/2020 10:28

I'm in tears. Usual round of trying to get DS 14 up at a reasonable time to do his schoolwork then his surly attitude about things has really upset me.

If the school could just let us know that they're expected to do a film review I would make sure we watched one over the weekend or prompted his memory about the one we watched a few weeks ago.

I just can't win. I simply can't do the schools job as well as my own and manage a surly teen. DH leaves the heavy lifting to me and is bemused by my emotional outburst.

Worldgonecrazy · 15/06/2020 10:29

Oops in the excitement of my first post for ages I forgot to use my original username. This was the prophetic reference in case anyone was actually wondering

DrearyWallAntler · 15/06/2020 10:30

Also fun fact: additional deaths are analysed as part of large schemes to expand trunk roads and motorways. (you increase capacity - increase trips - increase deaths)

That one fact has never stopped a scheme yet.... (to my knowledge)

BarkandCheese · 15/06/2020 10:42

HauntedGoatFart the shopping thread is actually quite fun, mostly because the OP is refusing to grovel or back down on anything and the dementors are getting more and more incensed at this. How dare she want to have enjoy herself and refuse to wear our self imposed hair shirt? She’s also been accused of being a Boris/Tory bot, all for going out to get her kid new shoes and an ice cream.

Oh rookie sorry you're feeling so low. Try to go gentle on yourself. You are doing the best you can and nobody could do any more.

We will all get there. It's shit sometimes.

Dowser · 15/06/2020 10:47

Thank you lady bath
I will save the links
No, there’s no help from parents
They just made the rent the other week.
I had to buy them the new fridge freezer and the new washing machine was paid monthly.
Long may my son stay healthy.
( he won’t let me give him things to boost his immune system either)

And good for her! Good for you if you're reading, shopping OP. You are clearly an anti-Dementor with a very robust Patronus.
Ibake · 15/06/2020 10:50

Dear god the shopping one. Clicked on it as positive title and thought it would be a good gauge. How wrong I was but good to see some of you on there fighting the good fight. Pigeon knows where we are she, used the word dementor

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/06/2020 10:55

Just read a thread about workmen in houses and PPE/deep cleaning.
We have 2 plumbers in all day today. Neither are in PPE/masks. I’ve shown them where the tea/coffee/kettle is. I wasn’t planning on deep cleaning anything when they leave. Am I reckless?

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 10:56

I've decided to be my child's mum, not his teacher. It's just the two of us and he needs to be happy and secure with me, if nothing else. I feel much better now, pressure is off. He might be behind academically, who knows, but at least he'll be happier.

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 10:56

Btw, that might sound smug or preachy, not meant to be 😳
