Anxious elephant
Agree..
anyway, my mum has just been ranting on the phone to me about some idea that Whitty and Vallance are going to resign if 2m is reduced to 1m? Let them. We need pragmatism here, we can't be held to bloody ransom by them.

Anyone who wants to Chuck their toys out of the pram...here’s the bin

Teateaandmoretea · 15/06/2020 08:30

Yeah I don’t think that threats of resignation should be considered.

Tbh I suspect they want out of it, and who can blame them?

Ibake · 15/06/2020 08:30

Morning all. I live next door to a primary school. The caretaker is unlocking the gate as I type. How lovely (let's gloss over the fact that Cheshire East didn't feel that their schools needed to reopen on the 1st June because they are so very special). I can see into the playground from my bedroom so will very much enjoy playtime today watching all the little ones run around like lunatics not keeping their distance at all.
Anyway, I just came on to let @magdas know that I like ALARP very much and that will be added to my folder of facts for dementor use. Excellent phrase. (And wave to you in your neighbouring constituency)

AnxiousElephant77 · 15/06/2020 08:30

We've been murdering for weeks, whilst following the rules.

Our household contains 4 people, dp has been at work the whole time.

The dc go to their dads every other weekend, his household contains 5 people. His wife works at a school. Exdh also working. His wife has 3 dc, they spend every other weekend at their dads, another 2 people.

We're all still standing.

Nihiloxica · 15/06/2020 08:31

We had a lovely weekend seeing friends and going to the beach. More sea swimming. It was gorgeous.

Now it's back to the gradgrindstone for me and my children.

Dowser · 15/06/2020 08:32

Oh nothing is wrong, this must feel like a kick in the teeth sweetheart. I know you’re struggling
I’m so sorry

And all I got was THE OFFICE IS FINISHED THIS IS THE NEW NORMAL

Sounds like he’s upset, angry and fearful too

AnxiousElephant77 · 15/06/2020 08:32

I think they probably do want out, what a bloody job. I know I would. It's an impossible situation. I did think it was interesting that Dishi said yesterday that the group of people reviewing the 2m rule would consist of scientists and economists, rather than just parroting 'following the science' like a robot.

rookiemere · 15/06/2020 08:33

Insane don't be too jealous of private school DCs. Our DS goes to a well known private school in Edinburgh and I've had to turn into one of those parents regarding the variability and quality of work sent out for them to do.

Final straw was being told last week on his report that he's not logged in to a subject he's planning to take next year - S3.I've written a no holes barred email to them asking why it's possible for local state school to let parents know when DCs have not completed work, but not at this school. Will be interesting to see what comes back. Clearly DS is not blameless in this, nor am I - though I've tried my best to make sure he is doing the work but it's poorly presented and I've received no overview as a parent ( whereas friends DD at local state school has)

I know everyone is facing their own personal hell as far as schooling is concerned, but I just wanted to dispel the myth that all private school pupils are getting something better. Although to be fair I do think they will get their act together for next term or parents will vote with their cheque books.

Dowser · 15/06/2020 08:33

Nihil, I remember gradgrind
Such hard times we are living in

MagdaS · 15/06/2020 08:35

Me too @Teateaandmoretea Grin

I didn’t become a scientist.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/06/2020 08:36

Nor me 😆

BarkandCheese · 15/06/2020 08:36

@Nihiloxica

Even he uses something called ALARP - as low as reasonably possible. Not zero, there’s no such thing.

Oooh, interesting.

"Reasonably" is an important word here.

It’s like basic health and safety at work training, the most important phrase is “where reasonably practicable”. If we cut the speed limit everywhere to 20mph, including motorways, it’d undoubtedly save hundreds of lives, but it’s not reasonably practicable to do so.
InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 15/06/2020 08:38

rookie thank you for sharing your disheartening news. That would certainly grind my gears more I think.

PickAChew · 15/06/2020 08:42

@nothingiswrong your DH needs a slap with a wet sock. Dh has been mentoring a new graduate from home and it's taking a lot more of his time than it otherwise would because all the screen sharing etc is such a faff. At least one of his colleagues needs the physical resources available in the office to do his job properly. Thrir meetings are mostly working by teams but they needed to do a big heads together thing that didn't work very well at all because the platform just wasn't suited to the type of back and forth needed.

TheGreatWave · 15/06/2020 08:45

I judge harshly those who demand “peer-reviewed papers” for any facet of their life as opposed to analysing the evidence they DO have and making a risk-assessment. Aka using your common fucking sense.

If you look closely they only ever demand "peer reviewed studies" for things that don't support their viewpoint (not just covid). It is interesting and frustrating in equal measures.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/06/2020 08:48

And in terms of ‘following the science’ it is basically comparable to a country where the speed limit is imposed at 20mph throughout already and the government asking doctors and physicists if the speed limit should be raised to 70 on motorways. They are going to say no aren’t they? Particularly as litigation is central to modern life. You cannot follow science you can only use it to help with decision making

AnxiousElephant77 · 15/06/2020 08:49

@Teateaandmoretea Cracking analogy. Will be using that a lot 😂

HauntedGoatFart · 15/06/2020 08:52

I went on the "shops are reopening" thread and tried to talk sense. Will I ever learn? Grin the virus is sentient and it's plotting revenge for our lack of faith RIGHT NOW.

Brb, taking DC to school for the first time in months. I may cry.

PickAChew · 15/06/2020 08:53

I have a first class degree in chemistry and only know that we don't have enough information and that a lot of the so called evidence the media throws at us is contradictory but the headline numbers themselves are not scary.

I'm a bloody good cook, mind 😂

allyjay · 15/06/2020 08:54

I'm starting to get a sinking feeling that it won't matter how low the death rate gets or whether we eradicate it/get a vaccine because we will all have to live like this FOREVER now JUST IN CASE there's ever another pandemic. Feeling very negative today

allyjay · 15/06/2020 08:55

Sorry for the dementoring

BarkandCheese · 15/06/2020 08:58

HauntedGoatFart, I saw you on that thread, you got told to fuck off by a particularly smug poster, whose medal is undoubtedly in the post.

Nihiloxica · 15/06/2020 08:58

This is so true.

These (unevidenced, BTW) steps are not symmetrical.

It's much easier to ban things than to lift a ban, much easier to impose a lockdown than lift one, much easier to mandate face covering than end the mandate.

That's why I won't be wearing a mask. Nobody is even bothering to pretend that it will be a temporary measure (and after lockdown, I wouldn't believe them anyway).

Humans have evolved extraordinary skills around facial recognition and reading of expression. I'm not up for living on a society where face are hidden.

I don't think the risks and harms of that are reasonable compared to the risk of one virus.

Pretty much my conclusion with my A level....

DominaShantotto · 15/06/2020 09:03

As they’ve expanded the intake today the junior school, previously fairly relaxed, has gone into full crazy mode allocating the kids numbers they must stand and sit on. I’m angry but can’t challenge it too much as dd is only in as a favour to us not coping. I don’t quite know what to do really.
