Littlebelina did you ever think we'd live in a dystopian society where you'd feel guilty about sending your DC to school ?

I really wish I had. I have a key worker letter although I can work from home just fine. But as he's 14 and I naively thought this would calm down after a few weeks, I didn't think to do it.

A friends DD is struggling with organising the learning as she has some educational needs and us going back to school 3 days a week. I feel bad as I'm jealous that her DD is having that chance to at least get some teaching in a school setting, but none of what is happening is fair on our DCs.

Lickyicelollies · 10/06/2020 07:51

@librarybooksandacoconut I will be emailing as well - thanks for the heads up about the figures

Littlebelina · 10/06/2020 07:52

Felt the same not the shame, doh

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/06/2020 07:52

I've been emailing our local MP but heard nothing. Our opposition just constantly responds about the R number and how it needs to be "safe".

The problem we have locally is that the mortality here is about 25% (600 odd cases and about 150 deaths) so most are convinced it's a horrible deadly disease out to get everyone.
What people fail to grasp is the generally poor health of pockets of the town. We've got some of the most deprived wards, health deprivation and a transient population with multiple complex health problems.

MagdaS · 10/06/2020 08:07

I’m convinced the UK’s mortality rate is as much to do with our poor health at a population level than anything else.

Littlebelina · 10/06/2020 08:09

rookiemere, it's ridiculous isn't it? We've only just sent ds back ourselves as similar to you we thought things would get better quicker.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 10/06/2020 08:09

I wonder that too, Magda. Fattest nation in Europe, worst death rate in Europe. Could easily be a causal connection there.

Teateaandmoretea · 10/06/2020 08:11

It’s also because the spread has been rampant in care homes where unsurprisingly the people are far more likely to die from it. It’s truly horrible, but stopping children from school and stopping the lives of everyone isn’t a sensible way of solving it.

I don’t understand why we didn’t just pay care workers £££££££ to live in or fully isolate outside work. Those who couldn’t do it furloughed. It would surely have been cheaper than furloughing everyone else.

Thighmageddon · 10/06/2020 08:16

Gosh you lot can talk.

I'm extremely excited at the thought of being able to visit our local zoo next week and support them. I'm going to see if I can book tickets for the weekend after they open.

We don't have small children either so, it'll just be me and dh.

rookiemere · 10/06/2020 08:17

Indeed, Instead teatea careworkers continue to be underpaid and undervalued. Not sure if they even qualify for the NHS discounts that are being thrown around, although they are likely to be earning much less.

SockYarn · 10/06/2020 08:22

Gosh you guys move quickly.

Now that things are getting so much better - zero deaths in Scotland over two consecutive days - the dementors have moved to second wave dementing. It's definitely coming, a friend in the NH says August, it;s going to be SO much worse. Hmm Despite all the evidence that it's not happening elsewhere.

MagdaS · 10/06/2020 08:24

I’ve just read our corporate risk assessment for a return to the office. It is truly depressing stuff. No face to face meetings with colleagues again, seemingly ever. All to be done on Teams. We’ve lost our minds.

I am so over this shit. I can’t work like that, my job is basically get round a big piece of paper and decide collaboratively what the best outcome is.

Librarybooksandacoconut · 10/06/2020 08:24

More signs that things are changing. I texted one of DS’s friend’s mum last week to ask if she would like a play date. She said no as she knew the boys couldn’t social distance and hadn’t seen any of her family either because of that. I invited them to DS’s party next weekend (playground and cake in the garden as long as we’ve moved to the magical stage 2) last night, and she’s just texted back saying they would be delighted to come. Result!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/06/2020 08:24

Hello!
It’s not just second wave dementing. I am starting to spot Brexit dementing again.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/06/2020 08:27

I'm taking this St Johns wort which is like an anti d, they use it in Germany but strangely it is banned in France Confused

Also have these sneaky 100 packs of co-codamol on prescription for a plan condition but not meant to take too many of these as addictive.

I'm liking Dowser's list. Aromatherapy can be good, such as bath oils also I have this pilates roller ting which you can lie on and it massages your back in a way. Not as good as a real massage but it is something.

i have the calm app also which can listen to in the night if you wake up, but the lady is a bit annoying to listen to so mainly have the music - kind of wish I had gone for Headspace as he has a better voice, but don;t feel can get that now I have paid for the other one!

Just ordered My Family and other animals book by Gerald Durrell for the DCs. Oh might be good to go to the zoo if it is not too busy / queues. Maybe can book online in advance, perhaps.

Teateaandmoretea · 10/06/2020 08:29

I am starting to spot Brexit dementing again.

^^this is a positive sign I think. In fact maybe we could use Brexit dementing in our favour. Personally I think Brexit is daft but in the grand scheme of things it’s a detail, not least because no one has a clue if the EU will even survive this.

Teateaandmoretea · 10/06/2020 08:32

Maybe can book online in advance, perhaps.

At the risk of sounding like a dementor you’ll need to be quick. The reason for all the flooding, flocking and ramming is that there is so little else to do (so ironically would be solved by opening more places up) So I imagine zoos will book up rather quickly.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/06/2020 08:35

The Times is reporting many private school parents pushing for their DC repeating a year and willing to pay for this. See there is a thread on this topic on here too.

And the gap will widen further. www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-700-000-children-doing-no-school-work-qprsc9z23

Orangeblossom78 · 10/06/2020 08:36

So after the zoo thing maybe could get playgrounds open. Not sure.

BlackberryViolet · 10/06/2020 08:38

DH was told yesterday not to expect to be back in the office this calendar year. So they are looking at January at the earliest. So that’s a minimum of another 6 months working at home, we have either lost our minds or something else is going on. I wasn’t at the meeting yesterday but I worry they may be thinking of reducing outgoings. If we work from home forever they can cut a site or 3.

Three months of both working at home have driven me mad, another 6 and I will probably end up loosing it completely

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/06/2020 08:41

DH works for a huge bank, London based. They’ve basically been told they will never be back in the office as they were before (approx 10,000 of them previously). The majority will WFH as standard now.

BlackberryViolet · 10/06/2020 08:41

And I probably should have added that we work at the same place!

Willitneverend · 10/06/2020 08:42

I'm also planning to write to my MSPs today. I tried drafting an email yesterday to send today but I was so upset it was just incoherent ranting.

Please can people mention kids sports clubs if they are writing to MSPs. I know it's unlikely we'll get schools back because of the timing of the holidays but having a government effort to get organised football teams or sports camp back would make a big difference at the moment.

Thighmageddon · 10/06/2020 08:43

Blackberry my dh has been going to the office throughout but many were wfh and have been told they won't be back until January as well.
