Bread that's got into water. Bleurgh

TwistyHair · 07/06/2020 08:32

@TodayIHaveGotThis what is it about buttons? My DD won’t wear any clothes with buttons on. Started from before she could talk, she would try to pull off her cardigans. Would only wear jumpers and now won’t wear anything with buttons or sequins but can explain why.

I get really creeped out and uneasy at the smell of Himalayan balsam. It’s so weirdly sickly sweet it makes me think it’s poisonous. That the smell might poison me and I’ll fall asleep like that scene in the wizard of oz where Dorothy falls asleep in the poppies. I can’t bear it.

I thought I only had one of these: pebbledash walls on houses. I've been like this since I was a young child and realised my friend's house had very scratchy walls!

Reading the thread, I realise I'm the same about quite a few:

Scritchers
Hoop earrings
Glass chopping boards
Tin can lids with their spiky edges

Baked beans
Sink plughole with food in it Envy

Long tunnels where you can't see the other end. I look at every distance marker so that I know which is the nearest exit in case of emergency.

The gap between the train and the platform edge

High speed trains rushing through small stations

Actually I think I've got loads and loads of things like this! It's a wonder I'm not a nervous wreck half the time.

Big yes to that bit of the M5. Not helped by once having an accident (thankfully a mile or two thereafter) when my husband failed to notice the multiple signs for a lane being closed until the point it was closed. I definitely avoid the lanes near the edge. I feel similarly queasy over the Dartford crossing and there's a new bridge near the Hoover Dam that was very windy and terrified me. Also, the winding and precipitous roads up to French ski resorts combined with kamikaze coach drivers.

Also long fingernails clacking on keyboards, blackboards, the scary front grill bit of French sleeper trains and seafood with glassy eyes staring at you.

Flip Flops. Can’t stand the thought of them, or to see others wearing them.

OreBrickWoodWheatSheep · 07/06/2020 08:55

Unglazed ceramic, the thought of a fingernail on it

Bisforbert · 07/06/2020 08:59

Fuzzy Felts, can't even think about them without my jaw clenching.
Gravy, all that dirty brown gloop over your food blurgh and ketchup, on or touching fried eggs.

Morred · 07/06/2020 09:02

That noise that wet fabric makes - like when you put a dress with a tie/belt through the wash and forget to unknot it and then you have to untie it when it’s wet shudder

DappledThings · 07/06/2020 09:04

Flip flops. That bit between your toes is just eurrgghhhhh. Don't mind other people wearing them too much but I can't comprehend how anyone can stand them. Just writing about it I'm now involuntarily clenching my toes.

Never driven the M5 but that bit of it looks cool! I would rather enjoy driving that I think.

SquirrelFan · 07/06/2020 09:09

Thirding glass cutting boards - can't stand the ringing noise they make when you're chopping a carrot, say. Was given a lovely (looking) one by a friend, and was so relieved when DH broke it!

ExpectTheWorst · 07/06/2020 09:14

I am racking my brain to think of something but I can’t. None of these is ringing any bells at all. There are things I don’t like eg flip flops, but they don’t make me feel uneasy or weird.

Redorange42 · 07/06/2020 09:17

Those plastic washing up basins that you put in your sink. Not only are they the most pointless thing on earth and I don't understand why they exist, they also just make me feel weird. People I've known who have them also tend to have really dirty sinks underneath the plastic basin with food stuck in and around the plug hole. But because the plastic basin covers it nobody seems to care or notice. Yuck

ChessieFL · 07/06/2020 09:19

Lakes. I still like going to them because they’re (usually) beautiful, but something about them sends a shiver down my spine.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/06/2020 09:20

Paper shredder machines.

I cannot believe no one has had a terrible accident with one before. I have to have one for work ( wfh) and I wont have it in the house I block it in the shed! For some reason I think one of us will plug it in and put our hands in for no reason . Weird.

Asparagus growing in fields

Fifteen2 · 07/06/2020 09:37

I just googled my list to check I really meant it and now I feel a bit nauseous 😂

Lemonmaid · 07/06/2020 09:46

Steep, long escalators, London Underground has some terrifying ones.

The gap between the platform and the train.

Level crossings.

The sound of approaching or distant thunder.

GreyGardens88 · 07/06/2020 09:53

Some of these are wet. Terrified of crisps? Hmm

hippoherostandinghere · 07/06/2020 09:58

I hate bridges. Especially ones that go over a road, I get proper irrational fear I'll through myself off it or someone will be messing around and push me off. I don't live in England so have never experienced the M5 but it looks terrifying.

I also hate wooden staircases. We had a case in the hospital I worked in where someone slipped and fell and did a lot of damage to her legs. It was horrific.

Also I hate ice. People biting ice lollies sends shivers down my spine. I hate the build up of ice you get in the freezer and when you put something in and it scrapes against the ice. Makes me feel sick.

hippoherostandinghere · 07/06/2020 09:58

Throw. Not through.

BearSoFair · 07/06/2020 10:04

Cotton wool balls. I don't mind cotton wool pads though! Makes no sense.

RedRec · 07/06/2020 10:06

@TwistyHair Himalayan Balsam smells like wax crayons to me. Strong and almost overwhelming.

BearSoFair · 07/06/2020 10:06

Oh also baked beans in their tin! I have to look away while I tip them out. When she was little DD once cheerily said they looked like little heads bumping together and I've been a bit unsettled by them since!

AnotherDFSsale · 07/06/2020 10:07

I have a really nice knife block with all types of knives in it but I try not to use the big ones because they scare meShock

I actually choose the smaller ones to do things like slice bread because the feel
of the bread knife makes me really uneasy..!

NEE1302 · 07/06/2020 10:10

Not an item but I can't stand the sound of other people chewing. And get irrationally annoyed at seeing them enjoying their food. Which is odd as I love cooking and feeding people...
