Ours are still having to wear uniform. None of it fits but I’m not buying new!

ThatLibraryMiss · 05/06/2020 19:42

Thank you, @TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair, that's the one.

Nihiloxica · 05/06/2020 19:42

What about Pointless Death Count?

Like you have to identify which places and times the fewest people died of Covid-19?

"Why you're right, yesterday NOBODY died in Northern Ireland!"

(SUBTEXT: why are they still locked down?)

SomewhereEast · 05/06/2020 19:43

HesterShaw1 Did you see that the French have publicly ruled out another national lockdown, even in the event of a second wave? Basically the costs are too high.

MagdaS · 05/06/2020 19:47

Ours are having to wear PE kit. It’s white, the boys only had one set each and you can only buy it from the school. Thankfully they have reopened the uniform shop since returning after half term and although I am £40 poorer, I am not having to remember to wash it every night...

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 05/06/2020 19:48

But I do also want to read intelligent criticism, and I'm yet to hear a scientific explanation for the failure of cases to resurge in Europe other than a higher level of population immunity, or at least lack of susceptibility, than expected

Yes, same HauntedGoatFart. I want to read all sides. It's important. On the Twitter link I posted to of one of Friston's main critics (on p9 I think), there is a woman who is an epidemiologist (Catherine Moore) who claims we could be seeing no rise in cases with lockdown easing because they're still building in the community atm. She thinks there would be a lag between that happening and there being deaths and patients hospitalised. Which is fair enough except that we would expect to see SOME signs of cases rising and at least the beginnings of an uptick in deaths if that's the case because people have been mixing and breaking lockdown for some time. And anyone spreading it around at the beach or whatever is still then stuck in more than usual and so it would be spreading quite easily in family groups if it was spreading. An increase in cases aren't appearing in hospitals and the weeks are passing. She's one of the scientists criticising Friston but her own conclusions seems to be lacking.

thenightsky · 05/06/2020 19:49

We couldn't get a delivery slot this week, so me and DH spent an hour this afternoon recklessly shopping in Morrisons. Quite a decent experience compared to Waitrose, where I was tutted at by be-masked dementors. The people of Scunthorpe seem very anti-dementor - or perhaps they just have no fucks left to give.

HarimadSol · 05/06/2020 19:50

Ooh, this is funny!

HesterShaw1 · 05/06/2020 19:51

SomewhereEast yes I did see something about that. Do you know if it applies to a national lockdown only, or local ones as well?

I wonder if it would apply to Cornwall. Cornwall's R rate is "a nighmare" according to someone on the holiday thread. Only the other day I saw on the Sky map that the infection rate in Cornwall and the IofSc was 0.5 per 100,000. No wonder people are confused, but is there any need for such hyperbole?

SpnBaby1967 · 05/06/2020 20:13

I've seen more than one friend panicking that the R rate has gone above 1 in the north west & London's has increased as well apparently.

Allflightscancelled · 05/06/2020 20:14

basically the costs are too high.

Well, who could ever have predicted that?

Oh, wait.....

Cattermole · 05/06/2020 20:15

Changing the subject a little - @HarimadSol I LOVE that book!!!

LittleSwede · 05/06/2020 20:16

Finally delurking! Have attempted to join in the conversation several times this week but it would appear DD thinks I should play with her rather than my phone. She has a point I guess.

What a relief to hear some sensible voices on this thread! DH and I have been watching interviews with Giesecke, Gupta, Sikora and others on something called lockdown TV by UnHerd on YouTube. I particularly like Giesecke!

Being Swedish I am probably biased in my view that this is all so over the top by now here in the UK. I know the world thinks Sweden is all open but of course there is a sort of 'soft' lockdown over there, people are working from home, keeping a distance when out and the over 70s are meant to stay away from people etc. But, the primary schools never shut. Children can play with each other! And from the 13th June Swedes can travel freely in Sweden and stay in their summer houses etc. Still encouraged to keep social distancing but you can sit in a beer garden and talk to people.

DD went back to school for one day this week (reception). She loved it. She has ASD. She 'should' have been unsettled by all the changes but the sheer joy of seeing her teachers meant she took it in her stride. She quite enjoyed eating lunch in the classroom and being in a bubble. One of the mother's at pick up told me she had no reservations about sending her DD in, neither did I, I said. A fellow anti dementor?

HarimadSol · 05/06/2020 20:25

@Cattermole I first read it when I was 13, and many times since then.

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-infections-halve-new-figures-show-568h5w29z

Coronavirus infections have more than halved, with only one person in a thousand infected in England, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

In the first clear sign that cases are going down, the average number of people in England with Covid-19 on any given day has decreased from 130,000, reported a week ago on May 28, to 53,000.

The ONS said there were about 5,600 new infections per day, down from about 8,000 reported last week. It estimated that an average of one in 1,000 people were infected during the two weeks to May 30, compared with 2.4 in 1,000 a week earlier.

It said: “Modelling of the trend over time shows evidence that the number of people in England testing positive has decreased in recent weeks.”

The ONS data is based on swabs taken from a representative sample of 19,000 people in 9,000 households by researchers. It does not include hospital or care home figures.

I really really really hate dementors. I’ve just let one wind me up 🤦🏻‍♀️

LivinLaVidaLoki · 05/06/2020 20:49

I always get irrationally angry when matt wanksock says "we still have so much to do..."
Fuck off. We have done enough. It's your turn now.

DominaShantotto · 05/06/2020 20:49

I will say that a week back at school has done so much for my kids. Dd2’s confidence and fluency speaking is returning (going to take a good while to undo the damage there fully though) and dd1 is brain a buzzing about coding, podcast recording and the writing they’ve been doing (the younger ones don’t tend to get in the recording studio much at school) and she’s back to being the slightly stroppy but much less angry girl she should be. Dd2 hasn’t had a collapse into sobs and tears episode all week - previously she spent most of every day in them- not tantrums just genuine upset over absolutely everything

Teateaandmoretea · 05/06/2020 20:50

Dd1 has loved being at school this week. Dd2 however is now on her own and even sadder Sad

Yes this! We’ve done our bit. They need to figure out where the vast majority of transmission is happening, and open up everything else. They need to protect people in care homes. They need to do some proper research into the role of children as spreaders. They need to roll out a mass testing scheme to find asymptomatic cases. They need to publish the supposed ‘science’ behind the measures they’ve implemented.
I’m done.

BarkandCheese · 05/06/2020 20:55

It’s so lovely hearing about the children who are thriving back at school. No chance for my DD but she did spend the afternoon in the park with a friend. Friend turned up with a skateboard which worried me a bit, DD has inherited my dreadful level of coordination, but all was well with no broken bones and she came back looking very happy.

bookworm14 · 05/06/2020 20:56

Can anyone explain the r number to me? If infections and deaths are falling, how can r be rising? I don’t understand it.

BakewellTarts · 05/06/2020 20:57

DD2 has also had a great week back at school. I couldn't be happier with their approach and she is a different child.

DD1 on the other hand has had a tricky week. I know she is happy for her sister but feeling a bit jealous. It's blooming hard!

Bollss · 05/06/2020 21:03

We've just had tea in our garden with my parents and my little brother (he is 17 years younger than me!) And it was SO nice to see Ds playing. They were prev a tiny bit dementory so even though they insisted we stay outside it was more for fear of being reported than actually agreeing it was right.
