Strong, dark, some hint of redemption or not. Fearless taking no shit women that I can soak up and mentally channel at such or whatever the acronym is! Solid writing/story please. I like Three Billboards, Star is Born, Fargo...

Oh, also the 2010 film Winter's Bone with Jennifer Lawrence. Gets VERY dark in places but comes out alright (in a strong way).

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/06/2020 21:02

And Kick-Ass!

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 21:08

Thirding Dead To Me here. I loved it. The two leads are fantastic, made me laugh out loud and cry a bit too. So refreshing to see two female leads being given material that allows them to be funny and show their acting chops.

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 21:19

"acting chops" Grin agree totally re female leads....

Not a movie but Jessica Jones! Its awesoooome

AgentCooper · 03/06/2020 21:20

Little Fires Everywhere on Prime is good too. It’s quite a complex story about motherhood, race, class, being a woman. Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington are the leads.

DefConOne · 03/06/2020 21:21

Atomic Blonde with a kick ass Charlize Theron in cool 80s clothes.

WinWinnieTheWay · 03/06/2020 21:22

@ButteryPuffin

I was totally going to say KillBill - I know that it's a bit fetishising of women in a weird Tarrentino way, but Lucy Lu walking along the board table!!

CatBatCat · 03/06/2020 21:22

Domino
Girl, interrupted
Salt

Look for films or series that pass the Bechdel test.

DameFanny · 03/06/2020 21:24

Another vote for A Long Kiss Goodnight - over of my regular cheer me up movies

Also Pitch Perfect movies people underestimate the strong social feminism running through it. And the follow ups are fun as well.

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 21:46

Bechdel?

No Offence is a great Channel 4 police drama set in Manchester where all the main leads are women. Joanna Scanlon is great in it.

PolkaDotsPolka · 03/06/2020 22:14

Another vote for Atomic Blonde!

Xiphisternum · 03/06/2020 22:16

Long Kiss Goodnight is fab and always pairs with A League Of Their Own in my head, both great!

Tigersneeze · 03/06/2020 22:17

I always add ‘Rita’ to lists like these as not enough people have watched it. It’s on Netflix (with subtitles)

She’s a teacher who is a bit of a mess in her personal life, outspoken, and totally kickass when it comes to doing what she wants and doing the right thing.

ladybird69 · 03/06/2020 22:28

The Assassin with Bridget Fonda and Double jeopardy with Ashley Judd. Both absolutely brilliant films.

BlueBrush · 03/06/2020 22:30

I love the Bechdel test! I'm a little bit obsessed with it.

msmith501 · 03/06/2020 22:30

As always I recommend Shirley Valentine - quiet strength and thought provoking.

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 22:32

Rita sounds good.

yes totally to Double Jeopardy!

Bechdel noted
