I keep thinking of how in Feb/March they just let all the flights in etc and other countries were being more careful; we were not able to get a test in early March as 'not been to Northern Italy' and now it is all the public to blame etc (or so it feels). I remember watching as they patronised us and told us to sing Happy Birthday and taking hand gel into the little shop the elderly in laws run, in concern. Hmm. And now, this

Zoe Williams, the stopped clock in action :)

@Allflightscancelled

Sorry if this has been said before, but I've been musing about all the negative, dementor-ish press coverage, and how it always gets worse before a weekend (especially a holiday one) or decent weather, or anything that might make us all. think 'Fuck it, I'm off out to do something that's not really allowed'.

And I wondered if press freedom had been curtailed in some way, and started to look into what it means to put the country on a 'war footing', which the government kept banging on about back in March. And I found a description of what that actually means. It includes this little gem:

Press reporting restrictions are imposed

  1. To control the flow and content of information
  2. Keep up morale on home front (OK that one, not so much)
  3. So that official information gets through clearly

And then I thought Hmm

This^ 100%

@enjoyingSun

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says that as of Monday 15 June face coverings will become mandatory on public transport in England.

Will there be an announcement on the trains crossing the border we are now crossing the seven/going into seven tunnel and face masks are now manatory and vice versa.

I am REALLY fucking annoyed about this one. I get the train down to uni - now I'm paying £200 a month to stand with my face in someone's armpit and having to have a gag on.

I need the most ineffectual, sticking to the letter of the law but completely against the spirit of it, passive aggressive face covering going. I'm also going to make a point of still taking my coffee on the train and drinking it through a bloody plastic straw. You do NOT stand between me and my coffee on the stupid o' clock to shitsville.

BakewellTarts · 04/06/2020 17:56

My takeaway from todays briefing that intensive care beds are now so unoccupied by covid patients that they are embarrassed to report the %.

Nothing on Zoos? I still don't understand why they can't open them.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/06/2020 17:58

Maybe they are neurotic that we will catch it from the zoo animals. Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 04/06/2020 18:00

At least it is not shops as well I suppose (masks)

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 18:27

Also it's royally pissing me off how every new bonkers rule is accompanied by 'or you'll risk a fine".
FFS. No idea how they propose to collect all this money from a nation of people without a pot to piss inHmm

countrygirl99 · 04/06/2020 18:29

domina I recently bought a cat face buff type thing off Ebay. I didn't buy it for Covid but it will be my go to face covering when needed.

£20 for three! I’ve been making them for the family and I was considering making extra, putting them outside with an honesty payment box and charging £2 a mask.

countrygirl99 · 04/06/2020 18:30

It was a lot cheaper than the Boden offerings

ISaySteadyOn · 04/06/2020 18:32

I don't like the face covering requirement at all. It pretty much forbids people with sensory issues getting public transport.

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 18:38

I agree the face coverings thing is crap. I saw it coming though and ordered some impressive looking masks a few weeks ago, from China. They're due to arrive this week. I don't hold out much hope they'll arrive. Or be any good if they do.

Timpsons are making washable ones for a £2 donation to charity. I got some of those too. They've got smiley Emojis all over them but I'll put up with it just to get out of blardy lockdown

ISaySteadyOn · 04/06/2020 18:43

But what about the people and DC who can't put up with it? If you are accustomed to getting places by public transport, you are screwed. And it's bullshit.

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 18:51

I know. It's just impossible for some people, which is hard to bear when it is, as you say, just bullshit Sad

MinesaPinot · 04/06/2020 19:02

We've just been to my mum's. She's 83, lives on her own and I haven't been able to reach her on the phone for the last two days so we wanted to check on her. Thankfully she's fine but WE WENT INTO HER HOUSE!!!!!!! My brother is a copper and I'm wondering if he needs to arrest me.

Matt Wanksocks has made my day GrinGrinGrin

TheGreatWave · 04/06/2020 19:05

I haven't spoken to my Mum yet, but she is 75 and has asthma, they don't drive (never have) and heavily rely on public transport, I am worried that she won't be able to go anywhere.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/06/2020 19:07

It says on BBC news that people with breathing difficulties will be exempt so hopefully your mum's asthma will mean she doesn't have to wear one.

BirdieFriendReturns · 04/06/2020 19:07

I’ve ordered myself a Handmaid’s head covering and muzzle.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/06/2020 19:09

I'm howling at Matt Wanksocks

BogRollBOGOF · 04/06/2020 19:09

I might not be able to zip my wedding dress up, but I can still fit the veil on Wink

Willow2017 · 04/06/2020 19:16

Maybe one of these to stir things up?

My mum has been on the bus today. She's reliant on public transport as she doesn't drive. She'll have the right hump when she hears she's got to wear a mask - she hates anything covering her face. I might send her my lightweight scarf with skulls on it to wrap round while she's on the bus just so she can make a statement!

TheGreatWave · 04/06/2020 19:19

Oh that's good news, thank you SirSamuel. It might be that my sister doesn't let them anywhere near a bus. (I live far far away)
