VE Day was four weeks ago. Are we all dead yet? Or is it actually queuing for Ikea that will see us off?

justasking111 · 04/06/2020 15:29

I cannot find the law googling, are you sure everyone?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/06/2020 15:29

That's great news, @Drivingdownthe101, so pleased she had a good time. DD keeps reminding her grandparents (my parents) that she's having "100 sleepovers when the germs are gone!!". I am very excited by this!

I also agree with everyone's horror at the lack of parliamentary scrutiny - and, frankly, uproar - at the making it illegal to have someone stay in your own home. I can only imagine it's because they don't expect it to apply to them. Can't imagine Jacob Rees Smug following it - there's a "an Englishman's home is his castle" type if ever there was one. It'll be a law for the plebs, not for them.

@justasking111

Really it is illegal for someone to stay in your home not just guidelines, I missed that one being in Wales. Cripes my neighbour has her family arriving tonight. After so many weeks apart. Sad
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/coronavirus-sex-lockdown-law-couples-indoors-england-a9542171.html

New coronavirus laws in England have made it illegal for couples who live in different homes to have sex indoors and stay overnight.

The Health Protection Regulations previously banned people leaving home without “reasonable excuse”, but the provision has been replaced by stringent curbs on where people can sleep and gather together.

The law, which will be laid in parliament on Monday, says: “There is a gathering when two or more people are present together in the same place in order to engage in any form of social interaction with each other, or to undertake any other activity with each other.”

While the powers are in force, “no person may participate in a gathering which takes place in a public or private place outdoors, and consists of more than six persons, or indoors, and consists of two or more persons”.

A separate provision makes it illegal to stay overnight outside your home “without reasonable excuse”, which can include moving home, work, attending funerals, providing care and escaping harm.

An exception has not been made for couples who do not live together, meaning that they can spend time together outdoors but not inside.

I've no idea if it applies in Wales - I think not. We are living though some strange times though.

highmarkingsnowbile · 04/06/2020 15:32

School dementors are doing my nut.

Willow2017 · 04/06/2020 15:36

Where is the Leader of the Opposition on this? Where are the Tory backbenchers?

Keeping stumm as they dont want to rock the boat with dementors voters. Talk about a missed opportunity to highlight laws curtailing our freedom coming in through the back door!

Therulerofmyhouse · 04/06/2020 15:37

@Allflightscancelled
'It's true that they can't really do anything about it as the police don't have the power to enter your house unless they suspect criminal activity.

So for example I may decide to have my DP stay overnight for which my neighbours could report me. The police could pitch up and ask me if someone was inside who isn't resident and I would just say no. Unless the police decided to camp outside my house all night (which is rather unlikely) to see if someone emerged the next morning there is nothing they can do.

It's just the principle that this law has been quietly passed which enrages me it is an assault on our civil liberties and makes it like we really are living in 1984.

It's a criminal conviction I would be happy to have, would be fun telling the grandkids that Grandma got arrested for having a shag in her own house with her boyfriend Grin

heroku · 04/06/2020 15:38

The rules are ridiculous. I'm currently renting and the landlord has just put our place on the market. In the last 2 weeks I've had 3 estate agents, a photographer and a boiler service man all come round. And in the next 2 weeks there are 15 viewings lined up.

And yet I'm banned from having a friend over to visit. Hmm

Interesting - they wanted an August opening for schools in Wales - bring holiday forward and getting back sooner in August and the teacher unions vetoed.

Current option is the second best.

On Wednesday, David Evans from NEU Wales, said the June plans were "too much, too soon".

Another union, the NASUWT, said the Welsh Government did not have "good enough reasons for risking lives."

But NAHT Cymru said its members' preferred the Welsh Government's plan.

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/06/2020 15:39

We’ve had two plumbers in our house for the the past two days repiping both our showers!

Flippetydip · 04/06/2020 15:41

DH is due into school in a bit for governors' meeting. He's happy to go and I'm happy they're having it but they are using the bullshit from the DfE to back up not having year 6 back in, but at the same time ignoring that it says governors' meetings should not take place in person.

I give up. I'm so tired of it all.

Therulerofmyhouse · 04/06/2020 15:45

*It scares me that this law was passed without a whimper from parliament.

It's such an incredible intrusion into our private lives by the state.

Where is the Leader of the Opposition on this? Where are the Tory backbenchers?

@Nihiloxica*
Just this!
I completely agree, that is why I am so enraged about it. I thought we were supposed to be a democracy, at the moment it really doesn't feel like we are.

Blobby10 · 04/06/2020 15:45

Its the lack of logic in these new laws which will make people rebel against them. My OH (lives in his own house 25 miles away, social isolating cos he's an anti-social bugger anyway, no kids, not working) was THE most law abiding citizen until a couple of weekends ago when he said sod it and stayed at mine for the night. Last weekend I cycled up to his house and stayed the night. This weekend though, now its actually illegal I'm not sure he will want to take the risk.

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 15:47

@Therulerofmyhouse

It's a criminal conviction I'd be happy to have too. The shagging my boyfriend excuse is unlikely in my case as I'm very married and DH is currently here 24 bloody 7, but I'd be proud to have stood up against the sheer bloody insanity of it all. I blame Chris Whitty. He looks like a man who likes everything quiet and orderly, with everyone abiding by da roolz.

justasking111 · 04/06/2020 15:48

What are the police going to do realistically drag you our in your pyjamas?

Bollss · 04/06/2020 15:50

Welsh Government did not have "good enough reasons for risking lives

Teachers unions don't think education is a good reason. Fuck me dead.

I'd respect them more if they were honest.

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 15:54

The police can actually do nothing, and I imagine they've got no intention of trying. We are presumably meant to simply roll over and accept it all.

Increasingly, I'm going to accept none of it.

Therulerofmyhouse · 04/06/2020 15:55

@Allflightscancelled

Chris Witty is definitely a straight laced abider of the rules.

I also think that the smug prefect Matt Wanksocks truly revels in coming up with these laws. You can just imagine him poring over ideas for how he can exert power & control over people with pointless roolz & laws. It's one big power trip for him.

mightbealittlebitmad · 04/06/2020 15:57

With all this stupid rules I'm beginning to think we are in some kind of social experiment and they are just making things more idiotic to see how long it is before we crack.

I really do feel like we just need to get back to as normal as possible now. If schools are considering part time only as of September is that because of "the bubbles" and if the bubbles are in place will that mean we can't socialise with anyone else unless it's from a 2m distance?

I'm struggling to see how social distancing as it is now can continue for much longer. Queues outside the supermarket in the pouring rain and freezing cold? Shops open but the queues for each shop mean they ends meet?

The last few days have felt somewhat normal with my eldest being at school. I took the small one to the shop twice despite it being frowned upon, I needed stuff and it made sense for me to go rather than send my husband after work. With the park next to my house being "open" that gives us something else to do.

The thing is though it's not normal. I'm not allowed to have a friend in my house for a playdate if it's raining, I can't go to work, can't go to the gym and I can't even take my child swimming or to soft play or any other form of entertainment. Kids are set to be distanced indefinitely which is just crazy.

I don't know how we will get out of this, what are the lowest number of cases and deaths before we can stop social distancing because if it's none then we will be doing this for a very very long time.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/06/2020 15:59

Have you seen the social distancing hats? Grin

@Therulerofmyhouse I have said all along that it's some kind of power trip but my husband thinks I'm insane!

Maybe we will get new rules like they did in Holland when they complained about this
