In my feeds there is a big crossover between lockdown enthusiasts and BLM protesters.
They satisfy the same need to signal virtue publicly.
It's been fascinating watching people try to defend public protests and also indefinite lockdown.
I mean, either people have the right to assemble in public and that is a fundamental right that should not be suspended for months by the government
OR
the risk of Covid is so great that we must forgo all civil liberties until going out no longer me and certain death (for someone)
The argument seems to be something like "we still really, really care about everyone being forced into behaviour we deem socially appropriate BUT opposing racism on another continent is so important to right thinking people that an exception must be made"
The reality is that the protests are no different from the people going to the beach - they show clearly that people know perfectly well that the risks of this virus are low for most people.
At least the beach goers aren't insisting that they alone have a valid reason and that everyone else must adhere to lockdown.
