@Orangeblossom78

Yes I was a bit Hmm as I know many of us including me struggle with home schooling,
Pretty much every qualified teacher I know is now despairing of how they can control and educate and engage a room of 30 of them but their own kids thwart every strategy they've got in their big book of tricks

My kids are pissed off it's nearly the weekend because they don't get to go to school then! That says it all about how traumatic it's being for them!

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/06/2020 12:35

DD2 is so jealous that her sister has gone back to school that she’s wearing her uniform and I had to make her a packed lunch to eat on the floor!

SomewhereEast · 04/06/2020 12:35

I vaguely remember zoos reopening quite early in at least some European countries, which makes complete sense to me (outdoors, numbers easily managed through ticketing, sector very very vulnerable to lengthy closures)

TheGreatWave · 04/06/2020 12:36

I think it was right to open garden centres, people do have extra time on their hands, I would hazard a guess that a fair proportion of the population visit a garden centre once or twice a year.

Golf courses on the other hand, was purely political, especially when the car parks to the local parks remained firmly shut.

Springersrock · 04/06/2020 12:36

God, our local dementors are out in force today

There has been a Black Lives Matter protest in town today. From the videos and photos I’ve seen, everyone was standing in their family groups, 2 metres away from each other. All very peaceful and well behaved.

There’s going to be a 2nd wave, all those taking part should be refused treatment if they catch it.

Plus a lot of “all lives matter” and accusations of virtue signalling and all sorts of ill-educated, racist bollocks being thrown around.

It’s made me quite sad actually. Why is standing up for something you believe in dismissed as virtue signalling anyway?

Nihiloxica · 04/06/2020 12:37

Ah god Sad

That is sweet but also a bit heartbreaking.

Firefliess · 04/06/2020 12:40

Sorry for your DS @Flipperty. Any chance you could organise him some social time with friends? My Y12 looks like having no prospect of any time back at college at all this term, and I'm fearful even for the autumn. But she's happier now that she can hang out with friends outside. I've also arranged her a private tutor over Zoom for one hour a week, which she really enjoyed. Yes I do realise how completely not right it is that this is the only way to get any actual teaching in two of her subjects, and that many of her peers will not be able to afford this Angry

Firefliess · 04/06/2020 12:45

My teens are planning to go to the Black Lives Matter demo in our town on Saturday. I think it'll be ok, they're all planning to stay 2m apart, and will take facemasks to be sure. I'm happy that they are motivated to want to go. And if the government tries to use lockdown to say that protesting is banned, that is really, really not ok

Vargas · 04/06/2020 12:46

I am so thankful to find this corner of sanity on MN. I know very few dementors in RL but my god, the Internet seems to be crawling with them.

My favourite recent dementor was on the BBC news the other night. Woman standing in the middle of a beach in Bournemouth whining to the reporter that the beach was too crowded. WTAF?!

justasking111 · 04/06/2020 12:47

Saw on FB this morning local group a member complaining that the window cleaner despite being told he was shielding Parkinsons, he asked for the money member said I do not have it, window cleaner said ok next month. Member asking others if he should have to pay. So I had a look at said members fb page, the member is a keen photographer and has photographed lots of places in his home town. Am sitting on hands here trying not to out him. The support he has had is unbelievable. I cannot fathom even if he was shielding how anyone can catch covid through glass.

Allflightscancelled · 04/06/2020 12:48

I've just been and murdered my own mother. Ventured into the house with her shopping, which I haven't been doing at her request, but we're both in agreement that we want to do this now, solely because Boris has said it's 'prohibited'. Oh and he (or maybe Chris Whitty) said she is now 'allowed' in her own back garden.

Who the fuck do they think they are with their prohibiting and allowing Angry

Nihiloxica · 04/06/2020 12:48

In my feeds there is a big crossover between lockdown enthusiasts and BLM protesters.

They satisfy the same need to signal virtue publicly.

It's been fascinating watching people try to defend public protests and also indefinite lockdown.

I mean, either people have the right to assemble in public and that is a fundamental right that should not be suspended for months by the government

OR

the risk of Covid is so great that we must forgo all civil liberties until going out no longer me and certain death (for someone)

The argument seems to be something like "we still really, really care about everyone being forced into behaviour we deem socially appropriate BUT opposing racism on another continent is so important to right thinking people that an exception must be made"

The reality is that the protests are no different from the people going to the beach - they show clearly that people know perfectly well that the risks of this virus are low for most people.

At least the beach goers aren't insisting that they alone have a valid reason and that everyone else must adhere to lockdown. Hmm

justasking111 · 04/06/2020 12:49

There are rumblings here teachers had booked holidays mid July the extra week at school means they would have to miss said holiday and lose their money. It is a bit pickleish as to how this is handled.

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/06/2020 12:49

justasking111 why on earth does he think he shouldn’t have to pay his window cleaner?!

fartingsparkles · 04/06/2020 12:50

Oh god!! There were paragraphs, I promise!!

More likely is to have the current class sizes with a classroom supervisor each, and one teacher setting work and marking for several classes.

Happened already in DC secondary with one subject they all have to do at GCSE.

I don't know what happened but the were left with one teacher for entire school in this subject just as there were load of other school disruptions.

Since Christmas just as Y10 and Y11 were coming up to GCSE exams and assesments lower down school DS has had supply teachers last month or two they don't seem able to get supply with the relevant skills - so if they got stuck on work set there was no help from the warm body in the room.

That teacher been absolutely great when the kids have needed to ask things outside lessons - I do think they've been spread really thin and I really hope they don't leave as well.

(Ps I just mistyped your name as EnjoyingSin)

Ha - I do need to name change. I picked that one first bit of sun we had after all the flooding here - which seems such a long time ago.

Still haven't heard from the schools - I supposed they are still working out the way froward or waiting on the guidance that's supposed to be coming.

justasking111 · 04/06/2020 12:51

Wales - health guy just now kept saying epidemic rather than pandemic, OH counted him say it at least 4 times. Thought that was telling.

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/06/2020 12:54

Apparently we don’t have enough cases for it to even be considered an epidemic now!

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 04/06/2020 12:58

We’ve got a holiday booked for first week of school holidays, which in wales is now school term and we have an extra week in October. I’m hoping they ask who can’t do that week and allocate accordingly. We booked it before Christmas and until recently the message was no way are we messing with school holidays.

I think the economy thing IS scary. I don't think talking about genuine serious issues in a nuanced fact-based way is 'dementoring'

I do too - not least as in last economic recession the banking crissis we'd just used all our saving our buying our first house just before and DH was sole wage earner and was made redundant right at the start and spent three months out of work.

DH looked some research documnets and think his institution thinks they be in the scond half of all currently existing one to go bust, there less effected by Brexit and his courses are still popular - so if we do get there things will be really bad.

enjoyingSun · 04/06/2020 13:07

We've luckily booked second week did it last September - still not sure if we should cancel or if we'll be able to travel to England and go. We're waiting till next Welsh lockdown announcement to finally decide.

FrodoTheDodo · 04/06/2020 13:07

Talking about the obvious consequences to the economy isn't dementoring. Its the posts that i've seen on certain threads saying things like 'sick pay will soon be a thing of the past, even for NHS workers' which are dementoring.

enjoyingSun · 04/06/2020 13:11

Its the posts that i've seen on certain threads saying things like 'sick pay will soon be a thing of the past, even for NHS workers' which are dementoring.

I've wondered if sectors like NHS and care home might realise sick pay can mean less infection spreading and less costs overall.

Teateaandmoretea · 04/06/2020 13:19

Economic dementoring is when people start predicting that money will become worthless and we are becoming a third world country and are all going to starve.

enjoyingSun · 04/06/2020 13:19

Sick pay and not placing limits on amount of sickness - that was something that last local hospital had brought in followed afterwards with lots of ward closures due to norovirus.

It was something creeping into a lot of work places only so much sickness allowed. Happened to last school bad ofted huge pressue to bring kids in even if unwell and then worse attendance figure ever due to norovirus running rampant in school.
