Shit! Is there anything I can do? Screwed up Tesco delivery.

My fault...I accidentally sent my (£200) Tesco delivery to our old address.

It’s registering as “delivered”. My son has run around there to see if they’ve taken it all in.

If they have and choose to keep it, what if anything can I do? Tesco customer service is closed at this time of night.

Can’t believe this has happened. We have very little money for more food 😥 I am such a fucking idiot.

@JustVisiting9..... calling police does seem rather crazy, but just incase as a last resort. Even to phone the police for advice of all else fails. Not to send 999 round Haha or that really will be ridiculous

JoeExoticsPrinceAlbert · 02/06/2020 07:28

Did you get your shopping in the end OP? This happened to me before apart from with Iceland, not tesco. I gave them the right address which is on my bonus card, but they made a mistake and delivered it to one of my neighbours. Her teenage son accepted the shopping and by the time I had been in touch with Iceland to find out why my shopping hadn't arrived and realised they had delivered to the wrong address, he had used loads of it. Iceland let me replace everything on my receipt for free. Hope you get sorted!

AlwaysCheddar · 02/06/2020 07:29

If she asks for the shopping back, and they refuse, then technically it is theft so she could tell the police.

Hanamuslim · 02/06/2020 07:29

Just seen pp saying that your son went round hammering the door. Is that what you said, he was actually hammering the door!!!!

Well of course they wouldn't. I'd probably call the police myself

AlwaysCheddar · 02/06/2020 07:30

Wtf would you send your son round? You should have gone!

JustOneLastThing · 02/06/2020 07:30

Hope ypu get it sorted op

Nixen · 02/06/2020 07:33

I hope you get the shopping this morning as it sounds like it’s an inconvenience you can ill afford.

You really do need to be more polite to the people in the old house though - none of this is their fault and as of yet you don’t know that they’ve done anything wrong! Sending your son around at that time was a bit of an error I think. I hope there’s not a confused or vulnerable person at the address who got a real fright!

heartsonacake · 02/06/2020 07:33

would OP really get a full refund in that position? It seems really generous if so - her mistake wasted a delivery slot and the driver's time and can everything really go back out on the shelves, even frozen stuff?

LisaSimpsonsbff Whether or not it “feels” cold is irrelevant. Their vans will be well regulated and checked every day because there’s food involved.

If the shopping did not leave the van, yes, it could go back on the shelves because it had been kept at the right temperature in the van.

However, if they accepted it and then the driver has, for whatever reason, to pick it up and take it back again, the chilled/frozen food would not go back on the shelves because they couldn’t guarantee the condition it had been kept in (even if the customer said it had been refrigerated, you can’t trust that).

It is also unlikely OP will get a refund as this was her mistake; Tesco deliver to an address, not a person, so they have done their part here.

slipperywhensparticus · 02/06/2020 07:34

For those saying they could have thought someone else ordered it they would be given paperwork with the OP name on it so it's pretty clear whose shopping it is

Tescos tried delivery of my neighbours food to me before he gave me the papers I looked at it and said no this is my neighbours (we ordered for around the same time so there was a mix up) you dont just take random food

JustVisiting9 · 02/06/2020 07:35

If they accepted the shopping in good faith (i.e. the person accepting the delivery did not realise, for whatever reason, that there had been a mistake), then I don't think that is a crime.

If they refuse to return the items once the mistake has been brought to their attention, then that may be theft. However it is possible that some of the shopping has been eaten and if it has I wouldn't expect them to reimburse me.

I am not sure I would want to take back fresh/frozen items that had been in someone else's house overnight. You don't know if they've been refrigerated properly.

Russell19 · 02/06/2020 07:36

Hope you get it back OP

heartsonacake · 02/06/2020 07:37

slipperywhensparticus They might not have checked the piece of paper. I never do; I just throw it away.

People need to stop attributing malice when there’s no proof.

JustVisiting9 · 02/06/2020 07:38

Re the delivery note: I'm not sure how Tesco work, but the couple of times I've had deliveries since lockdown (from other stores), the delivery note has been tucked in one of the bags as part of the contactless procedure. Not sure someone unpacking shopping that they thought someone else had ordered would pay much attention to the name at the top of the note - although they may wonder why the shopping wasn't the items that the household normally bought.

covidco · 02/06/2020 07:38

There's loads of possible explanations:

  • didn't actually accept it
  • main shopper gone to bed, other family member took it in
  • thought it was a nice gesture from a friend as they've been having a hard time.
  • person has additional needs & didn't realize it wasn't theirs.

I've done online shopping for various friends and family members over the years, and particularly recently with the Covid situation. I'm a frontline worker and don't always remember to tell them.

Our (Asda) driver never asks for a name and there's no paperwork anymore, it's all on the app.

I hope you get your refund or your shopping back. But they are necessarily cheeky fuckers for accepting it.

Taciturn · 02/06/2020 07:39

Although the police won't be interested, since there is nothing criminal, the acceptance of goods (use, rather than taking in a parcel for a neighbour) which are not yours presents a civil debt. If they did take your groceries, you can file with the small claims court to recoup the £200.

covidco · 02/06/2020 07:39

Asda and Tesco round here don't do delivery notes anymore.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/06/2020 07:40

Also it could easily have been delivered (if it even was) an hour earlier in the 'slot' Icado delivered mine 4 hours early the other day. 4HOURS.

I've also had Tesco deliveries say 'delivered' when they weren't (all easily sorted)

I hope you get it sorted ok, but you need to calm down and stop assuming the worst!

billybagpuss · 02/06/2020 07:43

Hope you’re able to sort it out this morning

mummyh2016 · 02/06/2020 07:48

I doubt we'll ever find out if she got her shopping ...

Heismyopendoor · 02/06/2020 07:49

Hope you get things sorted OP, it would be a lot of money to lose

Weepingwillows12 · 02/06/2020 07:49

Not sure it helps but I could easily accept the erongbstuff at the moment. We have a more on the door to ask for deliveries to be left in the garden as we were shielding. I forgot tesco was coming and only rememberedxwgen I found it in the garden the other day! If it was late maybe they were already in bed and it was just left there. Most likely it's been returned to store though and you will be refunded.

Squaffle · 02/06/2020 07:51

Good luck OP.

We had a tradesman fixing our front door last week when our Tesco order was delivered. I had had to pop back to work for an emergency (key worker) and he said he was happy to take the shopping in to the hallway for us. The delivery driver refused to allow this as it was my name on the order, so only I could take it in. If the worst case scenario has happened, this might be useful for you?

mangomama91 · 02/06/2020 07:53

Have you checked your orders on your tesco account?
I had a delivery once for the late slot and apparently I didnt answer the door, eventhough I was waiting by the front window for that whole hour just because it was so late and my doorbell was so loud. Anyways, I had no communications from tesco about it so I had to phone tesco myself, obviously they take the money before hand so that wasnt refunded until a few days later, but its worth checking with tesco first.

Squaffle This case is entirely different and not related to OP’s situation at all.

Tesco deliver to an address, not a specific person. In your case, it was obvious said tradesman did not live at your address and so couldn’t accept the order. Using your name as the reason would have been a polite excuse so as not to call the tradesman a potential thief.

In OP’s situation, Tesco (may have) delivered to her old address, and the people there really do live at that address. So Tesco isn’t at fault.

Sertchgi123 · 02/06/2020 08:01

I hope they sent it back to Tesco.
