DD2 happily getting ready for bed and excited about tomorrow. You'd have thought it was Christmas eve based on her happy chatter and preparations.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/05/2020 19:44

Thanks @BakewellTarts

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 31/05/2020 19:45

@LivinLaVidaLoki - When arguments about risk come into play I always think about care workers who have been exposed to far greater risk on minimum wage and often with the worst T&C companies can legally get away with. They've carried on throughout this and deserve to get a pay rise as well as improved conditions (they did anyway, but I'll bang the drum to make their case any way I can).

Iceland is a lovely holiday. Again, pre-DD we went to the geysers, spent Christmas at the Blue Lagoon, loved La Perla spinning restaurant...it was just the most fascinating place as they live every day at risk of natural disaster and have planned their lives accordingly. They also have the most fascinating myths and legends due to this. I'd love to go back in the summer and go whale watching. I also fancy a cruise chasing the Northern Lights. There's so much to explore on our incredible planet.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 31/05/2020 19:46

I'm very envious of anyone having school to look forward to tomorrow. DD is seeing her first friend for a play date since lockdown. I haven't told her yet as I don't think she'll be able to sleep with excitement. I can't wait!

Orangeblossom78 · 31/05/2020 19:47

On the shielding thing- that was in response to charities for certain conditions saying please do something for these people. Then the gov did- and wrath! they did try and say at the briefing it is only what they feel comfortable with.

BakewellTarts · 31/05/2020 19:49

@Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy I know I wish all schools were back. DD1 won't be back until September and is being very kind about her sisters excitement but I know she is sad that she isn't going to go back.

Drivingdownthe101 · 31/05/2020 19:53

We did our first play date today. Not intentionally, we dropped something off at DD1’s friend’s house and they invited us into the garden.
It was lovely. The kids played like kids should play. DD1 was so happy to see her best friend that she was just grinning. I got to sit and chat to her friend’s mum for a couple of hours. DD’s have gone to bed an hour earlier than usual, tired and happy.

From personal experience.... DH was in school with key workers' children and nobody got ill, including staff. He was in school pre-lockdown (in the most infected borough of London) and no kids (or teachers) in his school got ill. To my knowledge, no children in my DC's school have had it, although one TA did (mildly). And this was when there was no SD, etc. I struggle to understand how it is now extremely dangerous.

On a similar note, I was still going every day to work on the tube train until the actual Monday lockdown, and although unknown to me, I had acute leukaemia and an absolutely shot immune system. And I didn't get it either.

It just slightly makes me think that.... it can't be quite as infectious as all that! 😕

HauntedGoatFart · 31/05/2020 19:57

Our barbecue was cracking.

Thanks for posting that article @MagdaS about the alternative modelling, it was fascinating. It seems to be the same theory as Prof Gupta and the Oxford team from a different angle - theres a hidden mass of immunity out there in the population, and Germany may have more than the UK for some reason. Wouldn't it fry the Dementors' heads if it turns out that our death rates are actually nothing to do with this government's activity.

Yeah - this is the first night in weeks and weeks DD2 is asleep by now - normally she's tossing and turning and fretting and crying about missing her friends well into the evening. Difference can only be that she's got "school" (she's been well prepared it's going to be a very different school) tomorrow to look forward to. I hope she doesn't freak out too much over it all - she's not normally a child that's phased by change but with how everything's affected her lately - all bets are off on that front.
RunningNinja79 · 31/05/2020 20:32

A few posts ago the talk was about sleeper trains in Europe. As a child we went to Venice by train. Train to London, then another to Dover. Ferry to Calais. Then a sleeper train to Milan and the final train to Venice. My dad worked for British Rail so I think he got the travel cheap. It certainly is something I'd like to repeat now I'm older.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/05/2020 20:40

BBC gone and posted new slightly dementory piece about schools going back, the night before. Thanks BBC. It's not that bad but goes on about the head pondering how to deal with any fatalities

BarkandCheese · 31/05/2020 20:44

I’ve had a lovely day in my dad’s garden, and I also (ssh) used the toilet there. DD got to play with her cousins in the paddling pool, it was so good to see her laughing and mucking around with other children, I feel sad that she’s now back to her solitary life.

2ndtimearound2020 · 31/05/2020 20:48

Same at our local school - noone has even had symptoms and yet the minute we ask about other years returning the screams of no it's not safe...
"Drivingdownthe101 Sun 31-May-20 19:23:16
Interestingly in our school, where they’ve had key worker children in for the past 10 weeks (between 35 and 50 every day), they haven’t had a single family (or teacher) needing to self isolate for symptoms. And that’s with parents who are Dr’s, nurses, paramedics and care home staff. The head mentioned it in an email to governors today."

Orangeblossom78 · 31/05/2020 20:48

We have a week to go till.school ds really looking forward to going too. I think it will do.him good especially going out in the playground

2ndtimearound2020 · 31/05/2020 21:13

This sort of post really does my head in

"Aridane Sun 31-May-20 20:53:41
Yeh, fuck the elderly, vulnerable and society"

What on earth is wrong with this person who suggests that by allowing shielding people (if the WANT to) go out for a walk or if they WANT to meet someone but socially distance!

How on earth does someone like that function in life!

2ndtimearound2020 · 31/05/2020 21:14

That early quote was a response from someone about how crazy it is to ALLOW shielding people to now go out for a walk - if they want to....

Seriously over the top.

rosettesforjill · 31/05/2020 21:24

DS is back at school tomorrow. He is SO excited!

We buffooned all over the beach today. Beach was pretty much deserted but coast path was impossible to social distance. And full of cyclists BREATHING 😱

Death toll will be huge

BarkandCheese · 31/05/2020 21:27

I haven’t seen that thread, but did the poster maybe mistake shielding for self isolating? That response would make some kind of sense if it was in reaction to the idea of a person who’s come into contact with the virus or has symptoms going for a walk. It makes no sense to say that about a shielding person going for a walk.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 31/05/2020 21:28

Emma Kennedy was all over twitter today. She has a mate in ICU who has been told to prepare for a huge second wave in July plus people she knows in the funeral business have been told it'll get busy in August.

FFS

Very envious and a bit teary at all those getting ready for school tomorrow. I can't cope in communist wales.

MagdaS · 31/05/2020 21:32

My boys have been in since lockdown as key worker children. The main users of school have been front line NHS staff. Not a single case in either children or teachers.

Both are very happy to be going back again tomorrow. My oldest has a bubble with other Y5 key worker children which will be lovely for him. None of the boys who make his life a misery will be in. My youngest is bubbled with the year above which he is seeing as some kind of promotion. Grin

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 31/05/2020 21:33

Have been sad this weekend. I've been a member of a private fb group formed when our DC we're born in 2011. We all met on Mumsnet and migrated to fb. We've shared deaths, abortions, marriage break ups and much much more. We've met up as a group and I classed them as my dearest friends.

The core posters turn out to be total dementors, incl a couple in the healthcare sector who have seen death and its coming to get us in the second wave.

I feel very lonely as I've now nowhere to go to vent or ask my qns that I don't want plastering one fb. I don't know how we will all get out the other end of this and we've been friends such a long time 😢😢

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/05/2020 21:33

Wales ditto my industry. You want 3 packs of chicken thighs for a tenner, or a loaf of bread for under a pound? Doesn't come at £25 an hour for the workers.
If they all refused to go to work because there's too many people standing close together, there would be a riot!

BarkandCheese · 31/05/2020 21:37

Surely all ICUs should be prepared for a second wave because if there is one they don’t want to be caught on the hop. However that’s not exactly the same thing as saying it’s definitely coming. We equip public buildings with fire extinguishers in case there’s a fire not because we’re expecting a fire at any minute.

BakewellTarts · 31/05/2020 21:42

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully welcome! I get where you are coming from some dear friends of mine are also dementers. I am hoping they will return to normal in the future. I can see how scared they are and by and large they do have risk factors which put them in more danger from Covid. In the meantime I'm hanging out here with like minded folks.
