Mine was Claire,it was on the radio when I was born.
Luckily I wasn't called it as there where loads of them about.

Georgina, apparently. It's more interesting than my actual name.

My daughter informed me that she doesn't like her name (which is unusual but not "weird") and wants to change it to Kim. I was a bit gutted and hope she forgets about it when she's older Grin

Mrsorganmorgan · 29/05/2020 20:37

Hilary or Geraldine eventually named after great grandmother

caramac04 · 29/05/2020 20:41

Vanda but my initials would have been VD (venereal disease, STD) the Clair but DF said I’d be chocolate eclair.
I’d have quite liked Vanda.

amusedbush · 29/05/2020 20:42

Ruth or Miriam.

No offence to anyone with those names, but I MUCH prefer mine. I’m very grateful my dad had a change of heart when I was born and suggested my name.

I gave my mum a pointed look when watching Friends and Ross suggests Ruth for the baby, and Rachel says ‘I’m sorry, are we having an 89 year old? I can hear the mahjong tiles!’

Lolimax · 29/05/2020 20:46

David Gareth. Turned out I was a girl.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/05/2020 20:47

Francesca.

cptartapp · 29/05/2020 21:03

Natalie. My favourite girls name. Her bf beat her to it.

notawendy · 30/05/2020 00:26

@amusedbush - 3000 years more like! It's why I'm baffled at my mum's switch from Wendy to Ruth. No correlation at all. But I love my name. I get Rue, Rouge, Ruthers, Ruthie and of course Ruthless Wink

Wolfgirrl · 30/05/2020 00:54

Freya. I love it. I am tall with long blonde hair so think I wouldve really suited it.

They gave me an ugly granny name instead.

iknowimcoming · 30/05/2020 01:21

Juanita Hmm no Spanish connection in my family whatsoever or any other country than UK for that matter. I don't hate the name so much as the fact that my mum thought it was edgy and yooneeq at the time (I'm nearly 50) Fortunately my dad put his foot down, I'm not actually that keen on my actual name but my family call me by one nickname and everyone whose known me as an adult by another so ......

Bunnyjo · 30/05/2020 01:37

Marina, as my mum is Greek Cypriot. As a child born in the late 70s in a very northern English city, I think that name may have given the bullies more ammunition to fire at me than just my olive skin tone.

My mum and dad eventually settled on a name that translated better in English and Greek and I have to admit I do really like my name. It hasn't dated in the way many other names from the late 70s/early 80s have.

amusedbush · 30/05/2020 01:44

@notawendy

A good friend of mine is called Ruth and it really suits her. My dad just decided it didn’t fit my face when he saw me Grin

UhhOhhh · 30/05/2020 01:49

Dove. I was very nearly called Dove.

I have a quite unusual name, if it ever annoys me I thank my lucky stars my parents didn’t go with their first choice.

OnNaturesCourse · 30/05/2020 01:55

Ciara

Corcra · 30/05/2020 10:38

Jessica or Kelly which I would much prefer to my own name.

rayoflightboy · 30/05/2020 11:11

Well I got Martina, which I quite like now.

OhMsBeliever · 30/05/2020 11:21

I was going to be Demelza.

My mum was a big Poldark fan.

wonkytonkwoman · 30/05/2020 11:26

Heather. Which I don't like, and I really dislike the name they settled on!

catfeets · 30/05/2020 11:26

I was almost Carly (Carly Simon was popular at the time) and I'm so glad my dad refused to register it. Heard someone shout it to a kid playing behind my house yesterday so maybe it's due a comeback Grin

BestIsWest · 30/05/2020 11:34

Alison. Friends with the same surname used it a few weeks before I was born. Just as well because we both ended up in the same class of 3 at A level.

They went with the name my grandparents had chosen for DF if he’d been a girl and I much prefer it.

wonkytonkwoman · 30/05/2020 11:34

@notawendy and @amusedbush

my DD is a Ruth; we chose it because we had a friend called that she she was a very lovely person.

Claricethecat45 · 30/05/2020 11:52

Karen...considering my parents 'vintages' that was daring for them - but - they did go with their original choice of French classic ( my mother was French)

En route to the registry office my father slipped his mothers name in as a 3rd middle name - which is Amelia - and i would like to have that as a first name !

willowmelangell · 30/05/2020 12:00

@Tomorrowsanewday Elvis had a co star called Ann Marget. A beautiful actress. They were in the film Viva Las Vegas. Maybe it was inspired by her?

Katinski · 30/05/2020 12:10

I've a really unusual surname and for a 1st name I was named after a famous US writer, so both 1st and surname were exactly hers. In later life I met her.Have a couple of her books. Bonus=when she died she left me some $$$ in her Will! I never use the first name btw and my surname changed on marriage, so few people now know the link.

amusedbush · 30/05/2020 14:44

@wonkytonkwoman

I posted upthread and said a good friend of mine is called Ruth and it really suits her. She is also lovely Smile
