Drag queen at wedding

I'm considering having a drag queen sing at my wedding. What would you think if you were at a wedding and a drag queen had been booked to perform? Obviously they'd tone it down a bit with swearing etc.

I’d LOVE that!
But she'd need to be good. I’ve had to suffer through some awful ones.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/05/2020 22:38

The reason we thought about it is because they're so bubbly, fun, colourful and sing the cheesy songs that get everyone in the dance floor.

A good DJ does the same thing without the cringe.

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 23/05/2020 22:39

Your wedding, your choice 🤷‍♂️

But I'd say only do it if you or your HTB have an actual interest or know the act you'll be booking personally. If you're just doing it to be edgy or quirky, you run the risk of being excruciatingly too curling

Everyone has DJs though, it's just a bit boring isn't it?

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
I'm assuming there's going to be kids at the wedding?
If so a family friendly one eg no swears or rude jokes Smile
If a child free wedding obviously that wouldn't matter so much

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 23/05/2020 22:39

Toe.

Doh!

Russellbrandshair · 23/05/2020 22:41

I’d hate it, I find woman face mysogynistic and offensive. Also tacky and they can never sing well. They always sound like 60 year men who gargle with whisky and smoke 50 a day

LesleysChestnutBob · 23/05/2020 22:42

Nope I'd leave the room. Can't stand them and I would think it was bloody weird that you'd booked it.

A DJ might be boring but at least nobody is going to have a problem with it

HoneysuckIejasmine · 23/05/2020 22:43

So, do you want them to do a routine as entertainment, or be the Emmcee of the day?

Heidihoo · 23/05/2020 22:44

I'd love it, but yes investigate closely and find a good one. Congratulations on your wedding!

BaronessBomburst · 23/05/2020 22:45

I find them offensive.

Ijustreallywantacat · 23/05/2020 22:48

I'd love it, depending on you getting a good one. There might be some sourpusses, so consider whether or not youd have them as guests. Auntie Maude might not be so keen. But please go ahead if it's what you really want!

EinsteinaGogo · 23/05/2020 22:50

Wholly agree with @SarahAndQuack.

If you and your guests have got a connection to drag, then a very loose maybe.

Otherwise - absolutely not - and I really hope impersonating a woman via a negative caricature becomes as unwelcome as other past 'acceptable' acts sometime very soon.

OtterBe4 · 23/05/2020 22:51

Please don’t fall into the ‘we are quirky’ wedding planners Hmm
Hire a ceilidh band, that gets everyone up Grin

Samtsirch · 23/05/2020 22:53

Shocked at the anti drag queen sentiment here, what’s that all about ?
The good ones are absolutely fantastic and definitely worth considering.

darkforceofexcesszeal · 23/05/2020 22:53

Ew. I’d give you a hug, say congrats, and feign a migraine and leave before he started. Misogynistic womanface not my thing. But if it’s yours, you do you.

SarahAndQuack · 23/05/2020 22:54

Weddings are boring.

That's sort of the point. They are tremendously lovely and exciting on a personal level. I love a good wedding. But the format is basically exciting because you're getting together for a party to celebrate people who love each other. And maybe some nice frocks.

It's not meant to be exciting in any other way. If it is, something is wrong.

If you want a drag act because you want to be novel and exciting, I think that's a little odd.

Are you new to MN? Grin
It's a topic a bit like buses - none for a while then three turn up at once, look out for others shortly lol

packetandtripe · 23/05/2020 22:55

no, don't think it's a great idea. If the person was a great comedian who happens to dress in drag, yes; but generally they are an absolute mediocre bore fest of glitter and makeup.

titchy · 23/05/2020 22:55

Ceilidh or square dance if you want people on their feet. Drag would be hideous.

Samtsirch · 23/05/2020 22:55

@BaronessBomburst
Politely decline the wedding invite then...🤣

SarahAndQuack · 23/05/2020 22:55

In my case, because it sounds like a straight woman using drag to make her wedding edgy and different, in the hope her guests will find it exciting.

EinsteinaGogo · 23/05/2020 22:56

@Samtsirch - if they are really that good, can't they just dress as themselves and engage the audience?

donquixotedelamancha · 23/05/2020 22:57

In approxiately the same was as cars having round wheels is boring. You might think square ones will be 'kooky' and show off your personality but they would be shit to drive on.

Similarly a wedding is primarily about people being able to eat, drink, chat and celebrate your marriage. It doesn't fit well with live entertainment because no one will listen. It doesn't fit well with very marmite taste because there will be a lot of differeent groups there.

Make the day as easy and simple as possible and you will enjoy the party.

Samtsirch · 23/05/2020 22:57

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains
No, I qualify as vintage 😊
Still shocked.
