Morning all. I've booked a sneaky day off today. DS is at school (made the decision to utilise a keyworker place this week) DH has to go into the office. Normally I'd take this opportunity to work in peace but I just can't bring myself to do it today. So having a quiet day to myself.
Been feeling absolutely awful since the night before last. DS had had his first day back at school. He was so happy.
When he got home the ice cream van came into the street so we said he could have one.
He goes running, full pelt, full of joy down the road. I almost cried. It was just pure pure joy. Then it hit me. This is probably the happiest moment in this kids life for TWO MONTHS.
What are we doing to our children??!! Why arent more people angry about this?! Their education has been canned, if they're still doing this part time bollocks in September it will be horrendous.
Not only will people maybe have to give up work to manage this, but if the curriculum is as intense as we are led to believe then there will be gaps in the education of an entire generation of young people. Poorer education outcomes often lead to long term poor health outcomes.
And right now? We are sucking the fucking joy out of childrens lives, asking them to sacrifice so much. The effect of this is huge, small children with depression, anxiety....Why arent people bothered about this??
Why is all the outrage focused on "there were 100 people at the beach today....we are all gonna diiiiiiiiiieeeeeeee!!!"
Still waiting for the massive spike post easter and VE day that the world and his dog were screaming about by the way.

I find it funny when you get the same reporters doing totally contradictory stories...

Even the same location / photos!... another today on sunlight and how being outside is Ok anyway as it kills it in 6 minutes! Confused

Last day of home schooling here for a week thank God. Finding that a bit stressful. on Google classroom for one and Microsoft Teams for the other...

heroku · 22/05/2020 08:04

It definitely seems as though those who don't have a voice (children, the elderly, young people) are getting the worst deal in this pandemic. I worry for the kids' mental health but I also feel so sorry for the students. I live in a student town and they've all just disappeared. They must all be spending the best part of the year locked up on a computer in mum and dad's house. Not only that but they're still expected to cough up for fees and rent (if they're with private landlords) and have no idea what kind of teaching they'll get next year. It's such a sacrifice for them to make when most of them will be at such low risk health-wise.

bakingcupcakes · 22/05/2020 08:06

Morning all, glad you're feeling well enough to re-join the thread Jourdain and Nothing I hope you're feeling more positive this morning.

I feel a bit negative today. I can't believe it's Friday again. Yesterday was an excellent day. We went to the beach and the woods. DS had a brilliant time. It all seemed very normal. The beach was quite busy but easy enough to keep your distance and everyone there was very normal. There was loads of dumped rubbish (probably from the day before yesterday) and that made me sad. Why can't they take it home. It felt like a normal day out apart from it being free! Usually we'd pay for parking/ice cream/McDonalds on the way home/something but there was nothing to buy and free parking. It was very strange.

I also missed a call from DS's school asking if he would be returning if they reopen. Probably a good thing as we were having a jolly rather than doing any work!

TitianaTitsling · 22/05/2020 08:06

Apparently the use of 'dementors' is someone's most hated MN 'phrase'. What is so wrong with not being filled with doom and gloom?!

heroku · 22/05/2020 08:06

Also I love all the handmaid's tale references. Maybe our cult needs a code word like "mayday" so we can identify each other in the wild.

BarkandCheese · 22/05/2020 08:10

I’m so sorry for all the young children. I think the mental health impact on primary aged children is a huge story waiting to break. My child is y7 and while I knew realistically she wouldn’t be going back we had an email from the school yesterday to confirm it Sad .

At least DD has arranged to go on a walk with her best friend at the weekend, the first real life contact she’ll have had with another child for nearly ten weeks. I’m also trying to arrange a meet up with her closest aged cousins in their garden. My sister lives next door to my dad and stepmum and all along they’ve been considering themselves one household so we should all be able to see each other.

I was zoom chatting to the family last night, apparently my seventeen year old nephew went for a socially distanced walk with his girlfriend the day before and came back with a love bite Grin . Not much social distancing going on there.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 22/05/2020 08:12

Whoop found you all.

I'm totally up for a cult. Scottish widows cape, badges and secret handshake mandatory.

It's dd's birthday tomorrow. She's going to be 6. I've gone completely overload on tat and decorations in an attempt to distract her from the fact she won't see any of her friends. Hoping my parents will come sit in our (huge, with side access) garden for a couple of hours & play musical statues so she at least feels like she's had a bit of a 'party'. Am so sad and angry that she is missing out, when there is NO RISK to her age group at all.

Ooh I went a bit dementory there myself with the capital letters didn't I? Oops.

Also, still no ice cream vans here, very rubbish, but the next village over has a cafe/bar that's started doing them so might go there later.

KnobChops · 22/05/2020 08:13

I’m furious about the treatment of children, how fucking dare it be felt reasonable to keep them off school and away from peers for an indefinite period, while the risks to them are negligible.

The hospital I work in is empty! We have hardly any new cases. There is no case anymore for overwhelming the NHS. Parents need to return to work.

We have policy being led by the screeching voices of dementors. All these idiots cowering at home, too fearful to leave the house while demanding full pay and relying on others all taking the risk to keep them protected. I worry attitudes will only change once furlough ends.

TheGreatWave · 22/05/2020 08:13

My local paper has an article about people flocking to a beauty spot and the "spike in two weeks" comments.

I really feel for the locals, but it was no surprise something like this would happen, hottest day of the year so far (and likely one of the days for the whole year), schools off, many people not working, car parks closed, toilets closed, BoJo telling people they can travel how ever far they liked, it was always going to be a recipe for disaster and yet councils seem resolute in keeping car parks and toilets closed. Monday is forecast to be a good day, more people will be off, it could potentially be a worse situation, BoJo has let that genie out of the bottle, local councils telling people not to come because they are "closed" is not working, they need to respond in an appropriate manner.

Bollss · 22/05/2020 08:15

Lol at Blue Oyster Cult. Don't fear the reaper is playing on a loop in my head now. I could quite fancy myself swishing about in a cape.

We've got the skip coming today.

Me and Ds are watching danger mouse in bed. I'm sad because usually he bounces out of bed asking whether hes going to nursery and he's stopped asking Sad

I wonder if he thinks this is his life forever now? I don't want to ask him because he's only 4 and it's distressing enough. I'm so sad for him and there is literally nothing I can do.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/05/2020 08:27

Have thought about writing to my MP today. I know realistically it won't do anything and he will just tow the party line, I just feel so despondent. I want to feel like I have a voice.

BakewellTarts · 22/05/2020 08:28

Have had a bad start to the day. My lovely DD1 in tears that she just can't do this anymore and so upset that she has 6 more weeks of home learning ahead of her. She's Year 9 so won't be back at school this year under any plan. I for one am fucking furious that a whole generation of children and young people have been thrown under the bus.

I also don't do cults or organised religion but i'm with you on this sisters!

Going out in a bit to comit murder by buying some lovely local craft hin AND NOTHING ELSE!!! (Well it's essential in my life).

BakewellTarts · 22/05/2020 08:28

That is of course craft GIN. Really need to proof read better!

NUFC69 · 22/05/2020 08:29

Anyone else furious with the AgeUK advert on the television, which says that the worst group affected are the elderly? Whilst I appreciate the number of deaths, I think the worst group affected are our children and young people. I think I am entitled to say this as a pensioner myself - I know my life is limited now because nobody lives for ever. The damage to our young may last for the rest of their lives - 60, 70 years.

Cattermole · 22/05/2020 08:29

Morning lovelies. Pissed off yesterday as mum is STILL suffering with sciatica. You can't triage a compliant 80 y/old over the phone. It is not possible. Their default setting is "no, it's fine, I'm sorry to be a trouble".
She can barely walk, she can't sit without pain. She needs it to be looked at. The surgery is open. Can she get an appointment? Nope, "the doctor will do a phone consultation".
Which is a lovely woolly 10 minute chat in which she gets told she can have a scan "when this is all over".
A nasty part of me hopes it isn't sciatica, because I will sue the bastards till they squeak if they have left my lovely mum in pain for almost three months for no reason.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/05/2020 08:30

Signing in, am discovering a few more non-dementors which makes me happy! My dad came over Ystd for the first time since lockdown started, was so lovely to see him. He also thinks everything needs to open up/go back to normal.

I'm off work next week so am planning lots of days out 😊

Bollss · 22/05/2020 08:31

@LivinLaVidaLoki I wrote to both our MPs (ones for my town the other the wider area) surprise surprise I got a reply for the torie mp agreeing with everything is said and that they were trying to get answers out of the council but they wouldn't engage with them. The labour mp has not replied.

I swear to god if blended learning becomes a think I will chain myself to the most appropriate venue and sell my story to any sad face newspaper who will have me. We cannot accept this for our children we can't accept it for women either because it WILL be women who suffer.

Nihiloxica · 22/05/2020 08:31

I wonder if he thinks this is his life forever now?

When Dementors screech that we all need to stay locked up because it wouldn't be fair for the shielding to be asked to stay at home for a year until a vaccine is found, I like to work this out proportional to age.

A 4 year old locked down for 10 weeks has been locked down for equivalent period of their life as an 80 year old locked down for 200 weeks.

200 weeks is almost 4 years.

BakewellTarts · 22/05/2020 08:33

@TitianaTitsling I wonder if thats because they are scared we have a point and others might see the light and join our Blue Oyster Cult?

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 22/05/2020 08:35

I wrote to the ministers yesterday and going to do assembly members today I think. I’ve got the template now so just need to look up contact details.

BarkandCheese · 22/05/2020 08:36

When Dementors screech that we all need to stay locked up because it wouldn't be fair for the shielding to be asked to stay at home for a year until a vaccine is found

See I don’t understand this. I realise being in the shielding group must be unremittingly shitty, but surely we only have two options. One, we all stay locked up, and two the shielding stay locked up and the rest of us go out.

Orangeblossom78 · 22/05/2020 08:37

I think children and parents could protest at school gates and playgrounds to highlight the injustice to children.

GeraltOfRivia · 22/05/2020 08:39

Just checking in. I'll catch up later. Absorbing myself in a sewing project today. First ever attempt at proper pattern clothes. Dungarees here I come!
