I’m not convinced by the reporting of that study
Obviously I haven’t seen the actual study
It’s apples and oranges anyway because of the change in a century of medical treatment
Stating that places with longer lockdowns reported an increase in manufacturing output - sure. We’re talking about a period of time where manufacturing was a big part of the US economy. Railroad sections still being laid etc. They were bound to increase outputs after being unable to work.
I’m not sure how much manufacturing accounts for the US economy now - but it isn’t a big factor in the UK.
Also, the age of those hit by Spanish flu was a lot different, they were working age.
Another thing is the worst case scenario predictions for the UK deaths was 500,000. With a population of 66 million....I cba to calculate that %.
I wasn’t thrilled with the first bit of lockdown, the first three weeks - though I objected to the length of legislation (two years) and the fact that it didn’t have any scrutiny.
But I accepted that three weeks to “build” hospital capacity might be needed.
Beyond that, we could have loosened lockdown substantially.
Perhaps talk to your friend about the 2018 flu deaths. Be interesting to see if he even knows.
