Am I right in thinking Sweden's schools have been open as normal all along? Or is that bollocks?

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 22:09

Infecting your kids with covid fear seems cruel I agree. The old fashioned way of shielding problems from your children seems to be unfashionable. They are not your friends there is loads they do not need to know.

As for the rabid commenters on FB SHOUTING stay home, no school, furlough, when their partner walks through the door having lost their job because of extended lockdown what will they be shouting then I wonder.

TitianaTitsling · 21/05/2020 22:12

Will they support blended working too? Full time salary, part time hours? Doubtful!

ISaySteadyOn · 21/05/2020 22:12

Thanks for starting the thread, Lilac. It's now pretty much the only thing I read on MN and keeps me sane.

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 22:13

Am I right in thinking Sweden's schools have been open as normal all along?

Yes, you are right.

It's important to understand also that EVERYONE in Sweden has died.

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 22:15

Oh shit, I'm sorry.

Did I say DIED?

Obviously I meant "sadly died".

Apologies for not using the correct terminology.Blush

Bollss · 21/05/2020 22:16

Grin I see!

If that's the case though isn't that enough evidence that schools don't massively exacerbate things? I know their lifestyle is somewhat different but I can't imagine their schooling is entirely different as in they can mitigate transmission where we couldn't?

How is it that they've not all died but us sending bubbles of children into school will wipe out the entire human race twice over?

BakewellTarts · 21/05/2020 22:16

Checking in on the new thread. I love a good party mines a G&T (there's a thought must go out and cause mayhem and buy some more)

I have spent quite a lot of time catching up on the old one. So many repeating themes. Mostly at how sad we all are at our kids and how their MH suffering.

@NothingIsWrong Its a test of a friend if they understand that lockdown is not lovely time out for everyone. But if you're worried come and talk to us. You'll get all the support you need.

@Nihiloxica your analogy is spot on. I don't want to be stuck at home forever because there might be a risk.

bookworm14 · 21/05/2020 22:17

Checking in.

DD and I went to get an ice cream today. The sun was shining, people were smiling; it felt almost normal, apart from the bloke in the ice cream shop wearing full PPE.

Still haven’t heard from DD’s school about when/if they’re having Reception back. I have a nasty feeling they’re going to bottle it.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 21/05/2020 22:19

just look them right in the eye and ask them to justify their shit

Alas, he's one of these people who are ALWAYS RIGHT. So he just throws more stuff at you which is meant to show you that's the case. He's a nice guy, I've just never ever known him to say 'good point, I hadn't thought of that.'

Surely you'd be better measuring growth from 1919-1924 as a marker of the effects of a lockdown on the economy? I hadn't even spotted that. It's very weird! As you say, the flu hit in 1918!

ThatLibraryMiss · 21/05/2020 22:21

It occurred to me today that the dementor mentality is not unlike the crabpot mentality, in that they can't stand the idea that some people aren't as miserable as them so they have to pull them back down.

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 22:24

crab pot mentality, that is so funny in a weird way for me today. I agree Library Miss. OH just thinks they`re not the sharpest pencil in the box.

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 22:26

OH went fishing again today, nary a bite but lovely just to feel the sand under his feet, smell the ozone and hear the waves rippling.

I tried to find an ice cream shop open in town, but none yet sadly.

OnItCarBonnet · 21/05/2020 22:27

Just checking in

Pinkflipflop85 · 21/05/2020 22:31

Found you again!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 21/05/2020 22:31

Bloody hell the, last thread filled up already! Just got on here after a long long day at work.

Checking in to say hello and the highlight of my day was seeing the lovely professor Whitty in the briefing. Yup. Today's been bad 😂.

Back to reading what I've missed.....

BakewellTarts · 21/05/2020 22:31

Someone asked how dementing was going in England. Quite well is the summary. Lots of hand wringing about other people and "if it carries on then we will never be rid of the virus"! Hmm So tempted to ask them just how many viruses humanity has actually eliminated. The only one I can think of is smallpox. So not a good track record there. Oh and we have Stasi dementors in a local village painting rocks with "Obey" and "Report your Neighbours" and putting them in amonst the rainbow, bee and other lovely rocks that children in the area are painting and finding. I hadn't realise that This Morning were also encouraging this behaviour. I am finding it very sinister.

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 22:34

Those rocks are sick, I would be removing them.

bookworm14 · 21/05/2020 22:34

Rocks saying ‘report your neighbours’?Seriously??

BakewellTarts · 21/05/2020 22:35

I know and had I found them I would have. I don't know about Wales going mad I think the whole of the UK has!

BakewellTarts · 21/05/2020 22:37

Still one thing I am thanking the Mumsnet dementors for is their thread in site stuff complaining about being called a dementor. I wouldn't have found you otherwise Grin.

Littlebelina · 21/05/2020 22:37

Have people seen this, might be worth asking a question about how much the impact on children's mental health has been considered www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3915917-MNHQ-here-got-a-question-about-children-returning-to-schools-for-the-Independent-SAGE

LilacTree1 · 21/05/2020 22:38

Adventures

I’m not convinced by the reporting of that study

Obviously I haven’t seen the actual study

It’s apples and oranges anyway because of the change in a century of medical treatment

Stating that places with longer lockdowns reported an increase in manufacturing output - sure. We’re talking about a period of time where manufacturing was a big part of the US economy. Railroad sections still being laid etc. They were bound to increase outputs after being unable to work.

I’m not sure how much manufacturing accounts for the US economy now - but it isn’t a big factor in the UK.

Also, the age of those hit by Spanish flu was a lot different, they were working age.

Another thing is the worst case scenario predictions for the UK deaths was 500,000. With a population of 66 million....I cba to calculate that %.

I wasn’t thrilled with the first bit of lockdown, the first three weeks - though I objected to the length of legislation (two years) and the fact that it didn’t have any scrutiny.

But I accepted that three weeks to “build” hospital capacity might be needed.

Beyond that, we could have loosened lockdown substantially.

Perhaps talk to your friend about the 2018 flu deaths. Be interesting to see if he even knows.

Sounds like they'd best be chucked into the undergrowth.

There is a sign near me in a front garden with some spaced out gnomes and the caption "We're social distancing, are you?" It makes me want to run up to, hug and lick a random stranger in protest Grin

These threads move so quickly, so many posts yet they never trend so are hard to find again when a new one is set up. I have to scroll through chat until one appears.
