They won't, as they'll "still be working". Aaaargh!!!

BogRollBOGOF · 21/05/2020 17:35

13 days since VE day and the CONGAS OF DEATH. Where is the spike in cases and surge in hospital admissions???

HauntedGoatFart · 21/05/2020 17:37

They won't, as they'll "still be working".

You don't need nearly as many people to design and deliver a virtual curriculum, though. Which is why virtual learning in the business world has caused a massive contraction in F2F learning offerings and departments. A part-virtual teaching model would require significantly fewer teachers.

iamapixie · 21/05/2020 17:38

TrusttheGeneGenie
It's just unbelievable isn't it. Your use of the C word upthread gave me my first smile of the day - I've just felt so shit trying to get DC to do school work while not achieving any of my own work - . It would be very cathartic to go on to a few of the school threads and just post it randomly!.
(I would never do that but I think I am genuinely now losing the plot.)

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 17:39

Where is the spike in cases and surge in hospital admissions???

The BBC published an article yesterday with a headline

"Is there proof the VE Day parties caused a spike in infection?"

Click into the article and it suggests that an increase in cases on THE FOLLOWING DAY might, MIGHT suggest that the VE party had an effect.

So no proof at all, and a fake news headline.

From the national broadcaster we pay a compulsory flat tax to fund. Hmm

I used to be a big defender of the BBC.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 21/05/2020 17:40

Exactly, especially as you can bet there'll be a whole load of MPs and Lords who have contacts with / are a consultant for / are in some other way linked to private education firms. Put out a contract to create a virtual learning course for KS3 RS, cut out thousands of real life teachers and line their own pockets in one fell swoop.

Bollss · 21/05/2020 17:48

@iamapixie you know what I barely ever use that word but it felt so apt!! I never thought id be that person who wrote to their local MP when things didn't go their way but here I am. I don't understand why people are happy for this to carry on I really don't.

Disposableplates · 21/05/2020 17:48

Why has the Scottish government teased by saying you can visit a household outdoors but next week! Its cruel, why not either announce it from tomorrow or wait till next week.

I have been lurking for a while and agree with so much that has been said. Thankfully most people I know are very fed up if lockdown as well.

iamapixie · 21/05/2020 17:49

Nihiloxica
It is very reminiscent of the move towards Gilead isn't it... When everyone was too busy getting on with their everyday lives to notice. When I write that, I think I sound hysterical, but actually it isn't really.
We are creating a society (presumably short term but a 6th of a year, and more to come, is actually pretty significant) where children's rights to education are ignored, where jobs will be lost, where teachers are made unnecessary, where doctors can't treat most illnesses, and where we are being 'nudged', by way of fear, never to protest again. And underpinning all that, women will bear the brunt as usual, because that's just the way society works
What on earth is going on?

Pleasedontdothat · 21/05/2020 17:51

Sorry if someone’s already raised this (you’re all too talkative!) - the Guardian is frothing about the level of immunity in Sweden. Apparently only 7.3% have coronavirus antibodies. The Guardian thinks this is evidence that the Swedes have done this all wrong and despite not having a lockdown, they’ve not managed to achieve herd immunity. I looked at that figure and thought it’s clearly not a particularly infectious virus then so surely that’s good news ... but apparently not Hmm

RhymingRabbit3 · 21/05/2020 17:52

Our preschool arent reopening due to not enough interest, and neither is the local nursery. I've been in contact with two of my neighbours who are also my good friends. Ours kids were at preschool together and we all hoped to send them back. So we are going to let them meet and play together from 1st June. They would have been playing together at preschool so the risk is lower than if we were sending them in and they need the interaction (3.5 years old)

Pepperwand · 21/05/2020 17:52

Just had a very sensible email from nursery about the measures they are putting in place to reopen June 1st. Essentially parents to drop off/pick up from the front door and not enter the building. Children to be kept in small, consistent groups and no social distancing required within their group but no mixing between groups and outside time done on a rota. All sounds sensible and measured to me so just praying that at least some other parents are also sending their children back to keep nursery afloat financially.

The dementors have really been getting to me the last few days. DS aged 3 has been crying saying he's lonely and he has no friends.... I'm just not prepared to damage him like this any longer.

DominaShantotto · 21/05/2020 17:52

In every household I know with two parents WFH - the child-education burden is falling on the women. Part time school in September the dickheads cheer, teacher mental health the dickheads cheer.

I had a meeting yesterday where there was a full page of measures being taken to support teaching staff mental health... there was not a line on the equally worded element of the question asked about children's mental health.

Women and kids don't matter.

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 17:53

Todays UK deaths 338

England 187. Wales 9, Scotland 37, N Ireland 5 = 238.
Deaths outside a hospital setting = 100.

HauntedGoatFart · 21/05/2020 17:55

the Guardian is frothing about the level of immunity in Sweden. Apparently only 7.3% have coronavirus antibodies

It's definitely known, though, that not everybody who is immune shows Corona-specific antibodies. There are people who have tested positive for the virus and subsequently cleared it who have tested negative for the antibodies, so the thinking is that some people acquire immunity through a T-cell mechanism.

IcedPurple · 21/05/2020 17:58

The Guardian is dementor central.

But if you take a look at their live blog, they've now added in a bit about how the serology studies from Denmark may not be reliable.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 21/05/2020 18:10

Where is the spike in cases and surge in hospital admissions???

It's not just that is it? We're 11 days since the tubes and trains started getting crowded as people went back to work in London for certain jobs. We should be starting to get a spike of new cases from that too, just about. The next 10 days will be interesting! I'm sure there still could be a small rise but we'll see. Hopefully it will be minimal.

iamapixie · 21/05/2020 18:15

Thank you for that explanation HauntedGoatFart. I have missed that and was getting increasingly baffled by the 'it's very contagious' versus 'no one has had it' dichotomy. That makes sense.
Although the fact that your post is fact-based and sensible clearly proves that you don't care how many people DIE. Wink

unherd.com/2020/05/oxford-doubles-down-sunetra-gupta-interview/

Interesting on immunity/antibodies etc

heroku · 21/05/2020 18:21

Yes it is all very Gilead. I tried to persuade myself to just "enjoy a slower pace of life" and "make the most of the time" but I hate it. Walking around the supermarket with everyone in masks and tannoy announcements about 2 metre distancing. Seeing all the closed up shops, restaurants and bars. The daily briefings with the death toll. The taped up playgrounds and lack of kids anywhere. I think anyone who is "enjoying lockdown" is a bit of a weirdo to be honest - it's so dystopian. That's why I hate the idea of wearing a mask - it feels like I'll be fully complicit in the dystopia.

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 18:26

Are the people who think this "slower pace of life" is enjoyable the same people who think prison is like a holiday camp?

Grin

I mean seriously, what is fun about not being allowed to do anything?

Bollss · 21/05/2020 18:27

I couldn't think of anything less fun tbh.

NUFC69 · 21/05/2020 18:31

Dowser, no, we have been going out for a walk, and my DH has gone cycling several times a week (rural Northumberland, just for an hour or so at first, now quite often three hours). We're very fortunate as our children and GC live locally so have also visited us on their daily exercise and for care giving. We went to a plant nursery last week, but haven't done any shopping, as although our daughter is not a dementor, she's very protective of us. DH has a bit of a heart issue, although generally he is fine. My NDN commented that she had heard the GC in the garden, so I said I hoped they weren't too noisy, and she replied about how lovely it was to hear them. No unpleasant Stasi neighbours round here.

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 18:32

A "slower pace of life" only has meaning if there is a life to be lived that is fast-paced.

Enforced slowness is not freedom from being busy.

LilacTree1 · 21/05/2020 18:39

Nihil

“ Why is this shit half life being accepted as the default?

Have we given up on the principles of free movement, freedom of association, and free universal education?”

This. As I said, I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to raise our voices. Otherwise anti lockdown is seen as the position of anti vax, anti 5G etc.

Two friends are school governors in London. They’ve told me today they are in the minority wanting schools to open. This worries me as I think the data is clear, London is well past peak.

Also, I don’t know about other posters but in my known group, the redundancies are rising, the self employed are desperate and the number of people on the street is increasing.

For Sturgeon to want a blended model in August - how the hell is anyone meant to be back at work? The friends who are governors are worried that England will push to follow Scotland and continue blended learning forever.
