What are you supposed to do when your teenager appears in mad getup?

DD is exploring a sense of style Hmm

Today she appeared in a massive jumper, a pair of black cycling shorts and the ugliest frumpiest sandals I have ever seen, with socks, and a scrunchie.

I am one to talk, considering the get up of my teenage years was far more skimpy and I had to sneak out of the house in most of it.

Do you comment? Do you just skip over it?!

Provided it's not massively revealing I let them get on with it! Sock and sliders - yuck!

user1498572889 · 15/05/2020 18:04

Just let her get over it. She will either get laughed at or become a style icon. My mum used to look at me and say that’s interesting 😁

KahRona · 15/05/2020 18:05

They're like sliders with buckles. I'd have wept if my mother had bought me them Grin

Point and laugh??

But if you're talking about the Birkenstock Madrid sandals, they are awesome! I'm 47 and I have a pair. With a furry lining. So ner.

Jocasta2018 · 15/05/2020 18:11

How old is she? And is her outfit inspired by anyone famous? I'm intrigued!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/05/2020 18:12

Tell them they look beautiful. That’ll have them running back to their room to change Grin.

I like the sound of your dd’s style, though. And I completely agree with the PP on Birkenstocks, including the ‘ner’.

SimonJT · 15/05/2020 18:12

Take a photo, place in album and get ready to show it off in a few years timez

thecartofhelena · 15/05/2020 18:14

I got a lot of "thats interesting" when I was a teenager, it was the only way I could rebel as my mother was a famous beauty, and I am not

Theplotisgoneawayforever · 15/05/2020 18:15

Sounds like she's channelling Khloe kardashian. Except the scrunchie.

RJnomore1 · 15/05/2020 18:15

You take a photo!!

AConvivialHost · 15/05/2020 18:16

Aren't scrunchies and sandals part of the VSCO style?

Kenworthington · 15/05/2020 18:17

That’s a very very mainstream and normal teenage outfit! Where do you live that you e never seen this?!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/05/2020 18:17

Famous beauty! Who? I’m
Intrigued

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/05/2020 18:17

And Birkenstock Madrid’s are fab

h3av3n · 15/05/2020 18:17

That's a normal, current look... you're literally describing absolutely normal current clothing. You're not of her generation so aren't keeping up with current trends. Just because you wouldn't wear it it doesn't mean it doesn't look good to her and her peers. I'm in my 20s and currently wearing cycling shorts with a baggy top and have a couple of scrunchies on my wrist. Totally normal young fashions at the moment...

Kenworthington · 15/05/2020 18:18

Mine would have worn all of that but with a teeny tiny bra top instead of the jumper. The only comment of your dd’s outfit would be ‘you’ll bloody boil in that jumper it’s hot out!’

ChippyMinton · 15/05/2020 18:18

VSCO girl

Google it.

BullshitVivienne · 15/05/2020 18:19

As a previous poster said, it's VCSO style. Don't worry, we're not supposed to understand it or like it.

fairynick · 15/05/2020 18:19

Sounds nice minus the socks tbh

CuppaZa · 15/05/2020 18:20

Agree it’s completely mainstream teen. You’re not alone!

CountFosco · 15/05/2020 18:21

You should be glad it has taken this long for her to start wearing interesting clothes. DD2 had 'interesting' style at 4, somewhere between social worker and art teacher. She loves clashing patterns, today is mild with pink floral socks and blue zebra print leggings.

ChippyMinton · 15/05/2020 18:21

Be prepared for the request for a Hydroflask. And metal drinking straws.

DD was into it a good while ago now.

TSSDNCOP · 15/05/2020 18:22

Oh sweet Christ on a giraffe, are sodding cycling shorts making a comeback. I did that with scrunches and high tops in 1989!!!

Wolfiefan · 15/05/2020 18:23

Say you like it and ask where she bought x. X being the piece you hate most! Muse about what colour of it would suit you best.
Grin

KahRona · 15/05/2020 18:25

Don't worry, we're not supposed to understand it or like it.

Oh good Grin

Yes, I've googled VSCO and that's it!
