What are you supposed to do when your teenager appears in mad getup?

DD is exploring a sense of style Hmm

Today she appeared in a massive jumper, a pair of black cycling shorts and the ugliest frumpiest sandals I have ever seen, with socks, and a scrunchie.

I am one to talk, considering the get up of my teenage years was far more skimpy and I had to sneak out of the house in most of it.

Do you comment? Do you just skip over it?!

My dad used to compliment my outfit. Nothing would make me get changed faster!

msmith501 · 15/05/2020 18:26

You support your daughter and her individualism. Any other reaction would be unnecessary. I'm sure most of us have experimented with fashion over the years and if she's happy then she will be confident also.

Elieza · 15/05/2020 18:29

I remember well being told by my mother ‘you’re not going out like that are you’.

Ah happy days! I guess it’s a right of passage, to have older people not liking your fashion choices!

MayFayner · 15/05/2020 18:30

Say “You look great love” and don’t bat an eyelid.

I promise you. DD is 18 and “looks” have come and gone.

KahRona · 15/05/2020 18:32

I said 'you look nice' and she glared at me Grin

She makes me laugh so much.

And you also wait for the day three years later when they turn round and say “WHY. Did you let me go out wearing x” 😂 it was black lipstick with dd1, it wasn’t permanent and no one got hurt.

Gingernaut · 15/05/2020 18:37

Take a photo and keep it for an opportune moment in about twenty years time.

iVampire · 15/05/2020 18:39

Adding my voice to those who say ‘photos’!

june2007 · 15/05/2020 18:40

Approach one, Your not waring that go and get dressed. (probably cause a lot of agro.)
Option two say nothing.
Option three encourage a tone down..

Think I have used all three.

With the first money I was given to buy my own clothes way back when, I bought a garment I thought was the trendiest thing ever. Showed it to my dad, who said encouragingly, 'That looks serviceable'. Put me right off the outfit...

dworky · 15/05/2020 18:49

Nothing, it's a natural part of growing up.

KahRona · 15/05/2020 18:51

Say you like it and ask where she bought x. X being the piece you hate most! Muse about what colour of it would suit you best.

This is sneaky. I'd have to practice to pull this off Grin

I'd have laughed, took a photo and told her - this is an outfit you'll regret in 20 years time 🤣🤣

CruCru · 15/05/2020 18:53

She sounds great. It's fantastic that young people have their own style. Providing that what she wears isn't offensive or extremely revealing, let her crack on.

CatBatCat · 15/05/2020 18:54

That is pretty much what I'm wearing right now minus the scrunchy. Shit, am I a 35 year old vsco girl?

icansmellburningleaves · 15/05/2020 18:55

I’d definitely say something if she was dressing provocatively or age inappropriately, but given that it’s just not your style, I wouldn’t say anything. She’s finding her fashion feet. Good on her for thinking outside the box.

CruCru · 15/05/2020 18:55

It's weird when young people are dressed in exactly the same way as middle aged people (this is probably why no young people now seem to wear Superdry - because the dads have started wearing it).

Allywill · 15/05/2020 18:57

when my daughter aged 11 came down with a short skirt and full face of make up my mum said don’t you look nice - it’s a shame you have nowhere to go 😂😂

KahRona · 15/05/2020 18:57

Do you say VSCO as a word or as initials?

What does it mean?

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/05/2020 18:59

Ahhhh, this explains why ASOS were selling cycling shorts that aren't anything of the kind. I was baffled.

I thought they were expanding their exercise range but when I clicked on ad and for cycling shorts they were just knee length lycra without any padding. I dismissed them as useless and moved on but now it's all clear Grin

SallyWD · 15/05/2020 19:00

I work at a University and many of the students wear these sort of clothes. It's like they're deliberately trying to look (what I would consider) unfashionable. They wear weird mis-matched clothes, garish designs, often ugly 80s styles. I think it's a specific style they're all going for.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 15/05/2020 19:04
Grin I have memories of my dad c 1996 bellowing "that is THREE-EIGHTHS of a dress!"
timetest · 15/05/2020 19:05

Smile and say something noncommittal. Teenagers are allowed to dress

as they like, they have years ahead to conform.

Grin Grin Grin

'That pelmet for a skirt' was my mother's wail Grin
