What are you supposed to do when your teenager appears in mad getup?

DD is exploring a sense of style Hmm

Today she appeared in a massive jumper, a pair of black cycling shorts and the ugliest frumpiest sandals I have ever seen, with socks, and a scrunchie.

I am one to talk, considering the get up of my teenage years was far more skimpy and I had to sneak out of the house in most of it.

Do you comment? Do you just skip over it?!

"Darling, you appear to have forgotten to put your trousers on" Grin my dad's reaction to various of my outfits aged 14-18

MaMaMyCorona · 15/05/2020 19:10

Sounds like a very common current teenage style to be honest. I've seen tons and tons of girls dressed like that.

Rollerbird · 15/05/2020 19:10

My dad said that I was wearing a big belt

TW2013 · 15/05/2020 19:12

Photo opportunity to save for boyfriend/ wedding/ grandchildren.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 15/05/2020 19:13

Mutter 'Jesus wept' and hide behind your paper / phone

Dollywilde · 15/05/2020 19:14

In about 2007 - when I was going through my ‘floral dresses that barely cover your arse/large cardigan/stripper boots’ phase - my dad me I looked like a primary school teacher moonlighting as a prostitute.

I took it as a compliment Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/05/2020 19:14

I would say nothing unless she was actively displaying her minge and/or tits, and wasn’t on a nudist beach.

Dollywilde · 15/05/2020 19:14

*my dad told me

maddiemookins16mum · 15/05/2020 19:15

You say ‘you’re not going out dressed like that’.....oh wait...😷

FreezerBird · 15/05/2020 19:16

'That looks serviceable'

Oh that's exactly the sort of thing my dad would have said - genuinely meaning it to be positive. And I'd have stamped back to my room and changed.

I miss him!

oooompa · 15/05/2020 19:18

I don't understand teenage fashion, that outfit sounds hideous. But then again I wore skousers, those really baggy trousers with lots of strips of fabric attached and my favourite outfit was baby pink bootleg cords matched with a stripey orange and beige pleated top so I can hardly talk 😅

Ohffs66 · 15/05/2020 19:19

Oh Jesus. I'm nearly 50. And based on my clothing choices (having done a Google off the back of this thread) I am apparently a VSCO girl 😂

Devlesko · 15/05/2020 19:20

I laugh, and ask what she's come dressed as. Grin

KahRona · 15/05/2020 19:21

Ah, I love the Dad compliment of 'serviceable'.

Abbccc · 15/05/2020 19:24

Oh so a normal comfy/90s look?

Maybelatte · 15/05/2020 19:24

Tell them they look great and let them crack on with it.

I went through some terrible phases as a teenager, I had green hair at one point and a shaved head at another point. My Mum just let me crack on and it really was the best way.

Noti23 · 15/05/2020 19:27

I actually like the sound of her outfit! I love the whole bike shorts look. I’m 22 not a teenager but I’d give it a go 🙈

SignOnTheWindow · 15/05/2020 19:27

@KahRona

It's pronounced 'visco'

KahRona · 15/05/2020 19:28

It's pronounced 'visco'

Magic. Must use it in a sentence soon Grin

My oldest DD has been picking her own clothes since she was 2. She has always been very stubborn and it got to the point that she refused every outfit I put out for her.
Rather than having a wrestling match with her every morning and then be late for work I just let her pick her own clothes - pick your battles and all that. She looked fairly ridiculous (in my opinion) most days from 2-6 ish. She still picks some random outfits now but I figure it doesn't matter; she's got clothes on so that's the main thing.
Basically what I'm saying is, just let her crack on and find her style! I certainly wouldn't make any negative comments unless it's not weather or age appropriate.

jackparlabane · 15/05/2020 19:33

I have the opposite problem of a daughter who wants to dress just like me. Does she take note of anything else I say or do? Course not.

I wouldn't mind except it's hard finding Sensible Black Sandals, Sensible Flat Boots and Sensible Stripy Tops That Aren't Pink, for a nine year old.

Also she wants to nick all my black boots and clothes as soon as she's big enough. Apparently she wants to be a goth when she's a teenager, just like me and Daddy were...

amber763 · 15/05/2020 19:40

Op "mad get up" made me laugh so hard.

Are the scrunchies worn as bangles?? Or in their hair? I had no idea this was a thing!

TwistyHair · 15/05/2020 19:46

Mad get up! Hilarious phrase. Also, scrunchies are back??? I remember making them back when they were around.

bluebellation · 15/05/2020 19:51

Oh God, this is making me nostalgic! DD is now 32 and dresses in vintage florals, sweet cardigans, pretty stuff. As a teen she was emo/goth , moody, peering out from under her peacock blue fringe with half a pound of eyeliner on. Lovely then and even lovelier now. It will pass OP, all things shall pass.

Loveatortie · 15/05/2020 19:52

I am in my 50's look at old photos and think why!! Look at my children and think "you going out wearing that' i say nothing Smile😁
