I think I finished the last thread by accident...

I love these threads. Rational people having a rational conversation without being shot down, it’s a revelation!

I’m not a mum but I completely agree that this lockdown is having a worrying impact on kids. Your childhood should be the most carefree time of your life!

I wonder whether we would have taken this approach 10-20 years ago, when we didn’t have 24 hour news and social media?

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/05/2020 22:09

What is the obsession with PPE?!

I’ve pointed out about 10 times that masks are for the protection of others, not the wearer so quite what value they are to a teacher in a room full of unmasked children is beyond me!

savehalloween · 11/05/2020 22:10

I frequently dream about getting invisiline to sort my wonky teeth out so am quite into the idea of masks. Would save me an imaginary fortune Grin

LilacTree1 · 11/05/2020 22:11

CarBonnet

I don’t know, the government manipulation is a big factor

But here’s an interesting blog post on death rates

Essentially I think people somehow thought they were immortal now?!

I am struggling lot today. Really what is the fucking point. Everyone I know is coping well (on the surface) and every time I open my mouth big bubbles of despair float out. I'm one of the lucky ones though, kept my job, lovely supportive boss. But it's all very bleak at the moment.

GroEggAndHam · 11/05/2020 22:13

Trust I was told on another thread that I was murdering the nursery staff by sending in my DD, with her dirty NHS germs.

Nighttimefreedom · 11/05/2020 22:13

@Sunshinegirl82 I agree.
Even in hospitals PPE is only worn in covid positive areas.

CaliforniaMountainSnake · 11/05/2020 22:13

If supermarket workers can manage to go to work on minimum wage - I'm sure teachers can manage.

And if covid is so deadly we all need to lock ourselves away, why arnt all the shop workers dropping dead? Or the nursery workers that are still working?

DominaShantotto · 11/05/2020 22:14

@LilacTree1 I get it, I’m keeping it functional for the kids but I’m plagued by thoughts of suicide and self harm and my way of keeping the self harm ones away (the suicide ones just niggle she would never be acted on) is usually to promise myself that if I still feel bad tomorrow I can do - just giving myself the permission to postpone it tends to stave it off completely.

Spent most of today making promises to myself to be fair. Now the goal is waiting till the kids are at their gran. I don’t fear the virus anymore (I did, but I researched the mechanics it seems to act by, the risk factors, percentages and epidemiology) but I do fear many more weeks of this.

Bollss · 11/05/2020 22:14

Oh @GroEggAndHam that's truly awful Sad why are people such arseholes?

I really really bloody hope some concrete evidence that children don't spread it comes out just so these wankers look and feel like total morons. (And obviously because generally that would be great news but you know!)

Mascotte · 11/05/2020 22:14

@NothingIsWrong I know how you feel 💐

@NothingIsWrong I've been the same last few days.

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 11/05/2020 22:16

24 hour news and social media certainly exacerbates anxiety rather than alleviating it.

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 11/05/2020 22:18

I'm going to book an odd day or two off work for next month. Should be able to go out for some nice walks, kids will like that.

TheKrakening3 · 11/05/2020 22:19

Hi from Oz to all you murderers! About to take DD3 on her death march for day 2 back at school. Start times have been slightly staggered to minimise parents gathering at the gates but otherwise business as usual. And definitely no masks or screens.

Sallycinnamum · 11/05/2020 22:19

Theres a great thread running where the OP asked when things would go back to normal. She must be regretting she ever asked as some of the answers are bonkers!

Life won't get back to normal for at least 3 years, pubs won't exist anymore etc etc. Taking great pleasure in predicting the end of civilisation as we know it!

Mascotte · 11/05/2020 22:19

My boy needs to see his friends. It's cruel keeping him stuck in with his old mother 24/7

Well all the dementors safely cocooned in furlough on 80% salary, stating they are not going back to work until there is a safe vaccine will not like it being incrementally dropped % wise. That made me smirk seeing them shrieking today about it.

I was in bits last night when Wales said nope no seeing family as was OH, felt just as bad this morning so thought sod it and went out in the car not for essentials but a mooch around town. B&M, Home Bargains huge queues thought sod that for a lark so trotted off to Boots which has completely re-opened no queue only three people in there, bought some fancy hair clips for my wild mane.

Then I wickedly drove along the prom, stopped the car opened the windows and listened to the surf hitting the shore inhaling the ozone.

I feel better this evening for that outing. As unnecessary as it was rather like bunking off school Grin

CaliforniaMountainSnake · 11/05/2020 22:20

Even in hospitals PPE is only worn in covid positive areas.

So I'm pregnant. I went for a scan 4 weeks ago and everyone had aprons and masks on. Went in 2 weeks ago and only about half did. I can't tell you why, maybe the advice changed, maybe they ran out. But the staff all looked much less concerned about getting close to the mums and each other in my second visit.

It's not healthy for kids to be locked up isolated from other humans. My toddler is now a full on telly addict and getting chubbier by the day.

It's also not good for our immune systems to not mix. Many kids haven't even been going out to the shops. So no contact at all other than people in their home.

Nighttimefreedom · 11/05/2020 22:26

CaliforniaMountainSnake the guidance is changing all the time at our Trust.
I go to most areas of the hospital and staff aren't wearing PPE unless it's a red or amber area.

I guess as services re open they will keep reassessing.
They're certainly not going to be treating everyone as a potential infection risk. It's not sustainable or proportionate.

Mascotte · 11/05/2020 22:29

I was just thinking, I was briefly a reporter to the children's hearing and the conditions even lucky children are in now would likely have been grounds for referral.

An interesting article @LilacTree1, thanks for sharing. I think as a society we fear death so much that it overrules quality of life. It does sicken me that we put animals to sleep to stop their suffering, but we think it’s inhuman to do the same for consenting people.

I hate seeing people say that pubs, clubs, restaurants, concerts, sports etc. don’t matter. They do - it’s where we have fun, let loose and socialise. Not to mention the millions of people who work directly or indirectly for those businesses. Happiness is important and it’s sad and worrying that the government don’t see it as such.

Mascotte · 11/05/2020 22:31

And the immune thing.. it's a disaster waiting to happen. Sun and exercise deprived kids on a diet of screens and comfort food. Well, that's us 😳

midwestsummer · 11/05/2020 22:32

I'm not a true anti-dementor.
I don't think masks are a bad idea now I've got used to wearing them.
But I was pretty shocked this weekend, the State parks have reopened and as all the local ones have been shut for months we drove out to one.
All of us have exercised daily's home for the last 2 plus months but we all struggled with a simple couple of miles walk.
DD and I got friction rashes from our trousers!
The dc were scared about leaving the house but we are going next weekend as well, we need fresh air and walking.
