I think I finished the last thread by accident...

I've just seen this - New York's map monitoring all of the coronavirus metrics by region.

forward.ny.gov/regional-monitoring-dashboard

This is exactly what we need. Come on UK - get your shit together.

OutwardBound2016 · 12/05/2020 07:56

I too am fed up with the teacher threads, part of me just wants to reply to all of them with ‘leave your job if you don’t feel comfortable and re train (claiming UC while you wait’. Some of the teachers seem to want the secret third option of sit at home, get paid and fail your students.

Nighttimefreedom · 12/05/2020 07:56

Yes I love that idea. That's what came to mind when I saw the 1-5 scale on Sunday. Sort of like a pollen count.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/05/2020 07:57

@heroku yes, we need that. Identify hot spots.

I agree. I presume we dont have mass teacher deaths from key worker kids being at school right now? I'm pretty sure if it was as dangerous as they say, teachers would be dropping like flies now. Yet they arent. Ive noticed MN has a weird exceptionalism for teachers and cleaners. Its like you daren't say anything critical about either or else you get flamed to death, even if your criticism is justified. Yet apparently, all other jobs are fine to be mocked, criticised, attacked etc Its weird.

BTW, I think I'm developing a crush on Rishi Sunak

SpnBaby1967 · 12/05/2020 08:05

My friends are primarily teachers or nhs workers, I am neither. But my whole sm is full of talks of teachers wont get ppe and they're considered unimportant and expendable, and how siblings will fall into despair at one being able to go to school but not the other (how hard is it to explain that it's just a staggered starting date?) And how the nhs staff will let me know what it's like in June when hoards of covid cases hit the decks.

I did point out everyone expected that after easter but it never happened. I'm sick of the my children wont be Guinea pigs talks, I'm more sick of the "I'm not sending mine back till september" like it's some magical future month when corona will go "shit, its autumn. I'd better fuck off now, my time here is done!"

I'm not complacent, I think I'm the right amount of nervous but sensible with it. The yammering about not going out and about or to school until there is a vaccine. There is a very real chance there never will be a vaccine, what then?? But if you dare to mention that we need to find a way to live with this virus you're called all sorts of names, and god forbid you support Boris or actually dont see anything wrong with the new slogan. Well then you're just cannon fodder.

The mere suggestion that the government is now moving to allow the british public to use some common sense is met with cries of "but everyone will think lockdown is over and all go out!" When just a fortnight ago the government were accused of treating us all like children.

My children have luckily been pretty relaxed about the whole thing, my yr 6 child has probably been more upset now and again but that's because she is older and understands more. Home schooling is non existent as DH and I both have mega busy jobs wfh (and very grateful to still be working) but they're not the kids of jobs you can just sign off for an hour or two each day, we barely manage lunch breaks. Yet, I dont doubt my kids will be fine because frankly they're fucking amazing little sods and are always surprising me! Grin

Nighttimefreedom · 12/05/2020 08:06

I just want to say at this point that the teachers I know want to be back in the classroom and are missing the children a great deal. Not all teachers are dementors!

I think those of us that have carried on at work through this maybe slightly less frightened because once you're in the workplace it feels quite normal.
I work in an office environment in a large hospital. Patients who are coming in for other appointments when you see them in corridors and waiting areas look terrified. They are almost always wearing masks and practically stick to the wall as you pass by each other.
Staff, including nursing staff, are getting on as normal and pretty relaxed. Yes social distancing is in place in the public spaces and we've got a lot of staff in my office working from home so we're spaced out when we're in. But you don't stand 2m away when discussing something with a colleague, further than normal but not 2m.
I think the reality is that once you're out of your stay at home bubble you can't sustain that level of terror.
You start to accept you're living with a risk and get on with things with some precautions.
Being honest I'm not sure if it is unreasonable for teachers to want masks, I'd prefer that as a parent to a policy of total distancing between children and teachers.
I think its reasonable for teachers to want to be safe, of course, but as with all of us, be realistic about the risk.

Mascotte · 12/05/2020 08:07

Morning. I've been wandering the internet this morning and got involved in an early skirmish where I was told that even orphaned homeless teens here are privileged and should remember the war. I'm not venturing abroad again and I should know better 😂

I also read a bit of some teacher things. I'll be very surprised if schools ever go back now. Still l, it's sunny, so onwards and upwards!

@Nighttimefreedom I see that about being out at work. To be honest, I get a bit dressed about going out though I know it's ridiculous and I'm fine once I get out, but being stuck in your house for so long does funny things to your mind.

Thats lovely to hear!

Orangeblossom78 · 12/05/2020 08:15

Maybe we will reach a point where they have to give young student teachers bursaries to get them in and the older teachers / ones with health conditions might go into online tutoring or teaching to teach the ones still at home. Something needs to change anyway.

DominaShantotto · 12/05/2020 08:16

I think lots of the teacher stuff now is being stirred up by the unions, plus the end of August natural dread of not wanting to go back but hyped up dramatically considering circumstances. Think there are also a lot who hate what teaching has become but are locked in for the salary, pension etc and for whom going in on a rota to childcare and mailing a few worksheets out is actually a pretty cushy number. Contrary to what social media is saying, it does not take 15 hour days to produce the work that’s being sent home (15 minutes on twinkl for the stuff we have got - if that).

I hated what teaching had become, still loved the kids, and I’m retaining but the hit to our income of me going to uni for 3 years is something lots can’t afford.

GroEggAndHam · 12/05/2020 08:17

@Nighttimefreedom There was a thread exactly on this point before but I don't know how to link it on the app. Thread title was about feeling less risk averse if you've continued to work... resounding answer mirrors your experience (and mine).

LivinLaVidaLoki · 12/05/2020 08:25

@CaliforniaMountainSnake
"Tummy bug, covid, sore throat, covid, snotty nose, covid. Let's just ignore the fact those are normal illnesses you get and will be more suseptable to post lockdown"

This is already happening, have you seen the amount of threads "I've got tummy ache/headache/restless leg/hemorrhoids could this be covid"
A million posters jump on telling them that they saw on the internet that they could be symptoms so yes you probably have it. 🤦‍♀️

And orangeblossom how easy or messy is the lush henna block? I've a ppd allergy and so can no longer colour my hair. M5 hair is generally a very deep brown so thats ok but I'm noticing I've more and more greys around the side of my head, on the underside mostly. So when I put my hair up I look like the bride of Frankenstein.
The henna block was always suggested as an alternative but is it a faff? Or particularly messy?

DominaShantotto · 12/05/2020 08:27

I used to use the Lush henna and it was a faff but worked well (I got gorgeous Scully from the X-files auburn out of the one I did) - trouble was the cat always got in the way so ended up with bright orange paws for weeks afterwards.

DressingGownofDoom · 12/05/2020 08:31

Morning anti dementors. This has made me laugh today: www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/health/masks-should-be-compulsory-says-man-feeling-like-twat-because-nobody-else-is-wearing-one-20200508196299

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/05/2020 08:31

In the mahoosive govt document, Boris addresses the fact that ther may never be a vaccine - he doesn't quite say "so we need to suck it up and crack on with it" but he does talk about having to find ways to accept that the virus is here to stay and we have to co-exist with it.

I don't know how the dementors perceive the future. Are they just planning on staying at home forever, supported by the government's magic money tree? All those people bleating about not leaving home until a vaccine - what if there isn't one? Ever? I mean, no skin off my nose if they DO stay at home forever, but - really?

pollyhemlock · 12/05/2020 08:31

Yesterday was a really difficult day. Everything felt totally negative. Dementors everywhere you look. Felt totally down and despondent. And really tired. Hopefully today will be better! Anyone else feel the same ?

Cattermole · 12/05/2020 08:32

Royal College of Paediatrics seem to have come out that..."it seems increasingly likely that there are comparatively few children with COVID-19 disease in the community, particularly younger children" and that in the Netherlands, research is showing that actually adults are more likely to pass it on to children than vice versa. OUR CHILDREN NEED PPE TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE GERM FACTORIES THAT ARE TEACHERS!!!!
amused

OutwardBound2016 · 12/05/2020 08:37

Absolutely agree I have some teacher friends who are desperately hoping they get their class back before summer, unfortunately the unions (as usual) are not doing the profession any favors at all.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 12/05/2020 08:44

@pollyhemlock me 🙋‍♀️
I am trying so hard to be positive but the last few days DS has been constantly on the go, switching from activity to activity all the time, always wanting something to do unfocused on any one thing.
Hes usually very chilled out and has a really good attention span but I'm struggling with this, and I believe it's because he isnt getting the stimulation or socialisation at home that he would at school. Particularly as an only child and I feel like an utter failure that I'm struggling with my own child right now. So when I see all these petitions to keep schools closed it pisses me right off. Keep your kids home if you want to, but dont take away our right to choose.
Why oh why are we putting our children through all this for an illness that for the vast majority is mild to moderate???? Why?

PineappleDanish · 12/05/2020 08:44

I've just commented on a thread stating a 3% fatality rate as fact. Where the fuck are people getting their information?

If there's one thing that this pandemic has taught me, it's that there are a lot more very thick people around than i'd originally thought.

Mascotte · 12/05/2020 08:45

@pollyhemlock yes. I'm getting quite down.

But I've seen @DressingGownofDoom's link and that's made me laugh! Thanks

Polly, me too, also feeling quite disappointed in some of the people who I considered to be friends who have also started spouting this ill informed rubbish.

Drivingdownthe101 · 12/05/2020 08:50

I feel exactly the same pollyhemlock. I was a ball of rage yesterday.
