Would £100k be a life changing amount of money to you?

And if so how would it so?
What would it go on or towards ?

Not life changing, no.

Would give me more security, but life would pretty much remain the same.

Frustratedandworried · 11/05/2020 10:51

Yes.. we could make sure all of our disabled children had at least some security in their futures when we arent around any longer. Quite sobering really.

Oknobutok · 11/05/2020 10:51

Yes. We can afford a much higher mortgage per month but don't have a high enough deposit to match. So that much would enable us to move to a different area. I'm really not happy in my current area. The neighbours are lovely. But we have a semi industrial area behind the house and the neighbourjood isn't really walkable. A big change in lifestyle from living in London with a nice little diverse high street 10 min away. So for us would mean a lot. But we're slowly saving so will hopefully get there!

ElbasAbsentPenis · 11/05/2020 10:54

Yes, it would pay off our mortgage and leave a chunk left over to live on while DH hopefully finds a new job after losing his contract due to Covid.

DrCoconut · 11/05/2020 10:56

£10k would be life changing at the moment never mind £100k.

7654321j · 11/05/2020 10:57

Yes. I could clear my mortgage, and I'd be able to try for a child, because I could use the rest of the money bridge the gap between my income and childcare/the additional costs of living with a child.

@BertieBotts I did come back and posted a few pages back

Absolutely! It would enable us to buy the rural plot of land with derelict cottage that we want to rebuild. I’m just hoping that nobody else buys it before we’ve saved enough. We would turn it into a smallholding.

longtompot · 11/05/2020 11:05

Oh my gosh yes! It would allow us to get all the work done we'd love to do on our house and make things a lot for comfortable for everyone.
(Dh would want to pay off the mortgage so any money earned would be used to do the work, but I'd prefer it the other way round.)

quarantinevibes · 11/05/2020 11:08

Yep I live up north and could buy a house for that and have some left over Grin would be life changing for me

dalrympy · 11/05/2020 11:08

Yes.

My parents just gave me £100k to put towards getting on the property ladder.

It worked and I now have (hopefully) a home for life with a payable mortgage.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 11/05/2020 11:11

I wouldn't say no to it but life changing, not really. It would pay off the mortgage and allow me to save more to be able to retire a couple of years earlier but that's about it.

justanotherneighinparadise · 11/05/2020 11:11

Yes. It would allow us to move up the property ladder.

Simonfromharlow · 11/05/2020 11:12

Yes I could buy my ex out of the house and not have to sell it

HouseOfSticks · 11/05/2020 11:13

Wouldn’t even notice it TBH

Mistymonday · 11/05/2020 11:13

It would pay off a third of my mortgage, or a sixth with funds to renovate properly all in one go. Life enhancing but not life changing.

Mammyloveswine · 11/05/2020 11:14

Yes definitely! It would clear any debts and pay off my mortgage!

Lostvoiced · 11/05/2020 11:14

10k would be a life changing amount of money for me.
Hell, 1k would be nice!

Thelnebriati · 11/05/2020 11:18

It would allow me to retrain for a new job and look for work without any anxiety about risking benefits, and have some disability aids installed. I don't currently qualify for anything, because they scrapped DLA. Although I need a carer for some tasks, it isnt enough to get PIP.
So yes, it would make a huge difference.

GigiLamour · 11/05/2020 11:36

It wouldn't really make any difference now.

But 20 years ago it would have been unimaginably life-changing.

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2020 11:41

Not really. I mean, it’s a significant sum obviously but not enough to pay off our mortgage although it would make a dent in it meaning we would be free from the monthly cost of repaying it sooner.
I’d probably upgrade my car, take the family on a nice holiday and stick the rest in our savings accounts for Dds uni fees.

Hollyhead · 11/05/2020 11:43

It would be a significant life enhancment but not life changing here too - it wouldn't change where we live, work, standard of living etc. It would just bring about more security earlier in our lives than we would have expected and we'd finish house rennovations sooner. Not that I wouldn't be enormously grateful for such a large enhancement.

Dartsplayer · 11/05/2020 11:53

Life enhancing but not life changing. It would pay off just over half my mortgage so we could live a bit more comfortably

FinallySleeping · 11/05/2020 12:00

It wouldn't really make a difference - I think we'd put it into savings and carry on as normal. I realise we are currently high earners though, and a ten years ago it would have been a transformative sum. Maybe in ten years' time we'll be in a different position again.

And we even live in the frozen Northern wastelands beyond the wall gasp

Spudlet · 11/05/2020 12:00

Yes. We would extend the house which would make a real difference. It would give DH a proper office space rather than being stuffed into the corner of our bedroom, and a spare room so we could have friends and family to stay - we’re all pretty well scattered so it has to be an overnight stay. And we’d just generally have more living space in the winter, which would be lovely.

As it is we don’t have anything like that sort of money but we had just remortgaged for a much smaller sum just before all this so we’ll be building a porch onto the front of the house when we’re able to. That will be life changing in a small way, as it will make the house much warmer and should give us a little bit more storage space for coats and boots and things. But yeah, when we can the big one... it’s going to be amazing 👍
