Would £100k be a life changing amount of money to you?

And if so how would it so?
What would it go on or towards ?

DoTheNextRightThing · 11/05/2020 08:44

Absolutely! I can't even imagine having that kind of money. It would take me 5 years to earn that - and only if I never spent a penny of my salary.

Oblomov20 · 11/05/2020 08:46

No. Would pay off mortgage, but wouldn't allow us to move, buy a house outright, stop working. Would need a lottery win for that.

mizu · 11/05/2020 08:46

Of course it would be life changing.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 11/05/2020 08:54

Not really. I would put it all into my pension fund. The only time I imagine receiving such a sum is when my mother dies, so it automatically feels a bit miserable, if that makes sense. I have no debts (but I am 50!).

inwood · 11/05/2020 09:01

No. It would be lovely but not life changing. Would pay off some of our mortgage but we still have a lot to go!

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/05/2020 09:04

It would make it a bit nicer. 20% off the mortgage, 20k set aside for the children and some long-term savings. I'd be very happy.

FredaFox · 11/05/2020 09:06

Would give me a deposit and a good contribution to my pension so yes it would give me peace of mind as I honestly worry about my future

sqirrelfriends · 11/05/2020 09:08

It would be nice to pay off some of the mortgage but it wouldn't change my life.

VisionQuest · 11/05/2020 09:08

Yes definitely. We would pay a chunk off our mortgage and use the rest for school fees. It would certainly take the pressure off.

RoLaren · 11/05/2020 09:10

£10, 000 would be life changing for us. Pay off all debts for a fresh start, a lovely family holiday in Cornwall (post lockdown) and some spare for those inevitable expenses such as car maintenance etc. I can dream.

OhMyDarling · 11/05/2020 09:12

Omg yes!
South London social housing/teacher/single parent here- it would DRAMATICALLY change our lives.

  1. pay of all debts
  2. buy reliable car
  3. decent deposit for a house with a bedroom for each of my daughters and a kitchen that isn’t in a corner of our only reception room
  4. Lino for the bathroom- ah such a luxury!!!!
LittleCandle · 11/05/2020 09:13

Yes! I could pay off a couple of reasonably small debts, put money into my investments for retirement and still keep a decent amount aside for holidays. Why - do you have £100k to give me?

Cheeseandwin5 · 11/05/2020 09:14

For me, yes it would.
It would mean I could pay off my mortgage and have a substantial amount of savings in the bank.
We would still have to work and live in the same manner but the pressure of knowing we had over a years safety net would be immense.

Cheeseandwin5 · 11/05/2020 09:15

@LittleCandle

HAHAHA

R2519 · 11/05/2020 09:16

No, without meaning to sound smug, it wouldn't.
Yes of course it would be nice to receive but it wouldn't change anything in our lives, nor would it make a significant difference to our mortgage.

BammBamm · 11/05/2020 09:52

Possibly yes. I'd use it to do something I've always wanted to for self-employment, but I guess it would depend how it went.

blettedmedlar · 11/05/2020 10:04

I'm with the previous poster in that it would be life enhancing, not life changing. My husband is retired, and I hope to retire in about 5 years. Our mortgage was paid off in 2011, but we had made sacrifices to be able to do that (at our last house move, we took out a mortgage over 12 years rather than take on another 25 year loan).
I would give a substantial sum to my daughter for a house deposit, and invest the rest. Maybe have a nice holiday too. I realise that I am very lucky.

Batqueen · 11/05/2020 10:07

Not life changing but would make things a lot easier for the next 3-5 years.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 11/05/2020 10:11

Yes. It would buy me more than half a house. The security of owning rather than renting would be life changing in itself, let alone the financial implications.

oohnicevase · 11/05/2020 10:14

Not overly , we have more than that in savings but it would be nice of course .

SE13Mummy · 11/05/2020 10:20

It would change our life quite drastically; we'd either use it to pay off nearly half our mortgage (we're in London) or to fund DC2's dream education. We've missed the boat for Y7 entry but Y9 entry would be possible and £100,000 would more than cover the boarding fees.

UnderLockdown · 11/05/2020 10:30

No - but can think of a few things I could do with it!

BertieBotts · 11/05/2020 10:32

Is OP coming back? I always wonder about these threads where they never elaborate on the reasoning for the question!

IcyWind · 11/05/2020 10:33

Yes definitely, I would be able to buy a decent house in my area with it

formerbabe · 11/05/2020 10:46

I'd totally renovate my house which would be great but I wouldn't say it's especially life changing.

My actual lifestyle wouldn't suddenly change dramatically

And as for this gem....

No we live in London. Thats less than a year's salary for us and doesn't yet you too far in London

I live in London on far less as does virtually everyone I know
