Do you have any landmarks you look out for so you know you are near home?

As kids when the power satiation’s and the pit came into view we always knew we were nearly home. Now it’s when we can see the ‘golf ball’, which is a radar station but from a distance looks like a giant golf ball, you can see it from miles away.

Beetham Tower. Mind you, it's visible from a fair distance Grin

I always look out for a lone tree on a hilltop, followed by the four bridges that’s when I’m nearly home.

Ratcliffe on Soar power station. It’s the East Midlands’ equivalent to the Angel of the North Grin.

IcyWind · 09/05/2020 18:46

A group of trees on a hill

PegHughes · 09/05/2020 18:48

When we'd been to visit my auntie and uncle 'down London' we used to look out for the cooling towers at Sheffield and know that we'd be home soon.

They've gone now. Sad

The angel of the north. When I see it on the A1 where almost back.

Clifton Suspension Bridge, especially when approaching from the south of Bristol.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 09/05/2020 18:52

A particular hill that I can see from my home and from the junction closest to my workplace 30 miles away. It's pretty huge!

PerplexingWords · 09/05/2020 18:52

M25

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 09/05/2020 18:54

Humber Bridge when I’m driving back to my home town and the horrid bit of motorway I hate when driving home.

lotusbell · 09/05/2020 18:54

@iklboo, I once briefly dated a guy who lived in Beetham Tower. Nice views from up there.
Mine are Winter Hill transmitter and the Mormon Temple, both of which are fantastic when lit up!

Geekster1963 · 09/05/2020 18:54

I know how you feel PegHughes they have taken a few cooling towers down that I used as a landmark and the pit towers have gone. Sad. I remember being stuck at the level crossing for ages while the trains carrying coal went past.

When I see the mast at Emley Moor.

picklesonaplate · 09/05/2020 18:56

There's a church near forton services j33 of the M6 (also known as the nearly home church Grin)

StCharlotte · 09/05/2020 18:57

Once I'm on the M25 then I'm on the home stretch (we live about a mile from the M25).

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2020 18:58

QE2 Bridge. When that is in sight, I know I'm almost south of the river and 10 minutes from home!

Bridecilla · 09/05/2020 18:58

Penshaw Monument. 10p to the first one to spot it on a long drive home when we were kids

ProfYaffle · 09/05/2020 18:58

Thetford Oranges on the A11 Grin

Crystal Palace radio mast - or Croydon Ikea tower, depending on which direction we’re coming from.

Chocadoddledoo · 09/05/2020 19:02

The farm in the middle of the M62.

reefedsail · 09/05/2020 19:04

There's a pair of bridges over the A3088. I always feel cozy and 'at home' once I've passed under them.

Stillbloodyraining · 09/05/2020 19:04

The coming home trees (a group of trees on hill) signify the home stretch. St Michaels Mount and Mounts Bay is nearly home.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/05/2020 19:04

The Abbey. Pretty much whichever way you enter St Albans, you can see the top of the Abbey and know you're home.

AdoptedBumpkin · 09/05/2020 19:04

Chatsworth House. Nice to drive past and think "we'll be back soon".
