As kids when the power satiation’s and the pit came into view we always knew we were nearly home. Now it’s when we can see the ‘golf ball’, which is a radar station but from a distance looks like a giant golf ball, you can see it from miles away.

The church.
We can see it for miles, especially at night when the tower is lit up. Its a regular refrain from the kids - "I can see the church!".

Port Talbot steelworks!

Letsnotargue · 09/05/2020 19:28

@AgeLikeWine Me too! You can see it for miles, especially coming up the M1 from family.

Carn Brea (large hill in Cornwall). You can see it from about 30 miles away on the A30.

The Gherkin, I’m about a 30 minute walk away, it’s also where I (usually) work.

The Malvern Hills - so spectacular and a signpost to being 'home'

OverZoomed · 09/05/2020 19:39

The beam of the lighthouse across the lanes, going to my parents’ house (only at night).

For my house, a rather less romantic landmark of a very large B&Q at the turnoff from the A road which means we’re nearly home.

On the train, when I see the pylons outside Rugby I know I'm not far away. Then the cement plant, and the pub I go to.

BikeRunSki · 09/05/2020 19:40

@heron20, I’ve said that a few times recentjy. Not a bad place to be stuck.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 09/05/2020 19:40

The Tamar bridge between Devon and Cornwall.

june2007 · 09/05/2020 19:41

As a child it was a water tower.

OneUsernameOnly · 09/05/2020 19:42

The lift tower. As soon as I see it I know I am almost home

twilightcafe · 09/05/2020 19:44

The water tower north of Oxford on the M40.

1point21gigawatts · 09/05/2020 19:49

The ruins of Corfe Castle

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/05/2020 19:49

Samson and Goliath, the Harland and Wolff cranes Grin

Another vote for Emley Moor mast or Meadowhall, depending which direction we're approaching home. Nice to know I'm not alone!

I can see Emley Moor from my study window, and I find it weirdly comforting to see it (well, them at present!) all lit up at night.

StillGardening · 09/05/2020 19:51

The blue bridge ! (Exeter)

squashyhat · 09/05/2020 19:52

The Mormon temple at Newchapel on the A22.

Stronger76 · 09/05/2020 20:06

Power stations, visible for miles away on the A1, now fewer cooling towers which is a shock every time I (don't) see them. Meadowhell. Lots of landmarks on the A1 as it was a very regular journey when kids were younger, different from when I used to travel as a kid as there are fewer roundabouts.

The layby at Sherwood forest where the cafe caught fire, just after adverse camber roundabout.

Wierd roof little chef at Markham Moor.

RAF jet plane in a scrapyard.

Harrier at RAF Wittering

Oh god I miss travelling and the joys of the open road

cookielove · 09/05/2020 20:15

There was graffiti on the side of bridge on the m25 that use to say "give peas a chance" everyone loved it! It was there for years! Everyone recognised it!!

An "artist" replaced it with his handle "Helch" a few years back and there was fucking outrage!!

But Hurrah it has been changed again now to "Thank you NHS"

DeanImpala67 · 09/05/2020 21:01

RAC tower at the M4/M5 interchange, when coming south down the M5, after a long journey it's so welcome to see.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/05/2020 21:08

It said GIVE PEAS A CHANCE for 20+ years until it got over graffittied by HELCH a few years ago.

Now says THANK YOU NHS

Snap @cookielove!

Bluebellbike · 09/05/2020 21:15

Stockport viaduct. Looking either up to it from the motorway or down from it when on a train. It feels like I'm home.

SuperficialSuzie · 09/05/2020 21:16

I must live near @OneUsernameOnly as that is our landmark too to come off the M1
