Coke float

Did anyone else have these as a kid (in the 80s)? They were lush.

For some reason was just thinking about it. DS2 looked at me like I was batshit when I tried to explain it. I've got coke here but no vanilla ice cream.

I never liked them but my brother did and often got them when we went out as a family.

GinisLife · 09/05/2020 12:11

Yes but in the 60s/70s. Beatties in Wolverhampton. Saturday shopping with mum. Lime pop with ice cream float. Lush

CakeCakeCake21 · 09/05/2020 12:11

We used to have Tizer floats, or cream soda. Coke as well.
I have tried a few times to make them with lemonade for the kids and it hasn't worked at all - in that you don't get that froth on the top - I don't know why. Maybe it doesn't work with lemonade?

I had them as a kid and it was a massive treat. There was a cafe at our nearest house/garden type place and I would have egg and chips and a coke float. It was amazing. I remember having one with American cream soda instead of coke too, when dad had collected enough petrol points to get a soda stream!!

CakeCakeCake21 · 09/05/2020 12:13

Ah, I have just looked it up and seen you have to put in the drink, then the icecream and then add a bit more drink and that is where the froth comes from - I wasn't doing that top up. i thought it would just froth up as soon as I put the ice cream in.

eggontoast2 · 09/05/2020 12:13

Yesssss!!!! Loved them. Used to make them at home in the 80's.

Dialdownthedrama · 09/05/2020 12:14

Oh I LOVED a coke float.

MollyAtTheFolly · 09/05/2020 12:14

My mum used to take me and my brother to Macari's in Bognor when we were visiting my grandparents - I always always had a coke float. Such a treat in those days!

Sirzy · 09/05/2020 12:15

On holiday a few years back we found a cafe selling them. Me and my BiL where in our element!

JoesExotic · 09/05/2020 12:15

Can someone explain the appeal? On the surface of it they sound really retro and cool but I've never managed not to end up with a congealed, vomity mess.

catinb0oots · 09/05/2020 12:36

The frothy vomity topping is the best bit!

vanillandhoney · 09/05/2020 12:46

Yes! I loved them.

Sainsbury's cafes used to do them in the early nineties. Mum sometimes took me after school for tea and I used to have one every time Smile

Lunde · 09/05/2020 12:49

Brings back memories of seaside holidays in the 1960s/70s

... along with a Knickerbocker Glory!

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/05/2020 12:50

They taste like a congealed vomity mess too imo.

PorpentiaScamander · 09/05/2020 12:53

Yum. Love coke floats. The ice-cream parlour here does them, but posh ie not just coke and vanilla ice cream but all kinds of combinations.

The cafe at the Roald Dahl museum sells 'fizzy lifting drink' which if iirc was lemonade, ice cream and sprinkles. Basically an expensive glass of sugar Grin

Spied · 09/05/2020 12:53

I excitedly offered to make one for my DC last summer.
They looked like they were about to call Childline.

totallynotchanging · 09/05/2020 12:55

Yes! Coke floats used to be such a treat. Also known as a brown cow.

happymummy12345 · 09/05/2020 12:58

Oh I loved them.

happymummy12345 · 09/05/2020 12:59

I had them in the late 90's early 2000's (was born in 1993).
Also banana split. Amazing

Fuss · 09/05/2020 13:00

Eds Diner still does them Grin

When I was a kid Dad used to make me a cream soda with lemonade and heaps of vanilla ice cream. Heaven. But in those days the lemonade wasn't full of artificial sweetener and the ice cream was a lot nicer.

Addler · 09/05/2020 13:00

We called them spiders in NZ. No idea why.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/05/2020 13:00
