Why get drunk when you have kids in the house?

Some of you might tell me to keep my nose out.

But scrolling through Facebook today (I really don’t know why I bother seen as it angers me more than it pleases me)

And many couples I know posting their kitchen work tops full of alcohol and how they are going to get drunk today. Couples who have kids.
And obviously it’s lockdown so they are definitely in charge of kids.

It’s taking all my tongue biting not to say something to them. Probably why it makes me let some of the steam off by writing this post. Why would you get drunk when you have kids?

You might say, how do you know they are getting drunk?
Well a couple with a photo of a huge crate of Budweiser and 4 bottles of prosecco amongst spirits are not exactly having a small glass.

It’s neglect.

I try, @MoonBaby1 Grin

I'm having a few beers tonight. With kids in the house 😮

The US has some of the most conservative laws. Noticed how many states have legalised cannabis? Depending how you want to interpret it, alcohol might be considered far worse and there have been a hell of a lot of people addicted to prescription drugs. People can be very narrow minded in their view of what is and isn't ok' based on its current state of legality and their own frame of reference.

For the record I don't smoke but am more open minded than thinking everyone who drinks in front of their kids is getting paralytic and everyone who smokes is a drug addict.

I wouldn't want to get paralytic with kids in the house, and I can't deal with hangovers these days, but a couple of glasses wouldn't hurt.
I always remember years ago when my daughter was about 9 months old going to a party with my husband and two friends who were staying with us, and their toddler. I didn't drink as I was breastfeeding, and I also wanted to be able to drive in case of emergency. We got home, and I had a phone call telling me my mum had died suddenly. My DH and friends were over the limit, and I was in such a state I couldn't drive. But it was ok, we're grown ups, and ordered a taxi. So you can't always plan for every contingency.

MartiniDry · 08/05/2020 18:25

"I agree OP.
There should always be someone sober to drive in an emergency"

Okay, areyousurethatsright, who can the non-drivers hand their kids over to? Or should they not be allowed to procreate in the first place?

iklboo · 08/05/2020 18:36

I think the police (and DVLA) would be more worried about me getting behind the wheel of a car than having a couple of glasses of wine. I can't drive for medical reasons. What on earth would I do in an emergency'. Oh, yes. Phone a taxi or ambulance.

chunkyrun · 08/05/2020 18:48

everyone who smokes is a drug addict

^^anyone that can't possibly wait till they're in bed will tell themselves anything because they're an addict

Thank goodness those of us struggling with years of infertility enforced childlessness can have a few drinks on VE Day judgement free.

Greggers2017 · 08/05/2020 18:56

Until you have worked with or experienced real addiction, stop throwing it about.
Having a glass or two of wine before your kids are in bed does not make you an addict. 🤬

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/05/2020 19:01

We get drunk but averagly so and only once a week.

hardyloveit · 08/05/2020 19:03

You don't know they will drink all of that alcohol though? My kitchen side always has bottles - at the moment I have around 8 Prosecco on the side and three in the fridge. Have lots of gin and whiskey too. However we don't get drunk. May have one but as responsible adults/parents we always makes sure one can drive but it's very rare we get drunk.

They may just be putting the picture on there "for likes" (which is annoying in it self

iklboo · 08/05/2020 19:52

anyone that can't possibly wait till they're in bed will tell themselves anything because they're an addict

What?!

chunkyrun · 08/05/2020 19:56

anyone that can't possibly wait till they're in bed will tell themselves anything because they're an addict

What?!

^^ I was talking about smoking weed.

Megan2018 · 08/05/2020 19:57

I’m drinking my second glass of wine and am BF my baby at the same time. Call social services if you like!

Mangofandangoo · 08/05/2020 20:00

I agree op. I do love a drink or 3 but some of the posts I've seen on Facebook today have been obscene.

SummerHouse · 08/05/2020 20:01

I drink because I have kids in the house. Grin

iklboo · 08/05/2020 20:07

@chunkyrun - ah, ok. I was getting worried I'd have to wait till 10:30pm when DS(14) goes to bed to pour a g&t Grin

MoonBaby1 · 08/05/2020 20:12

summerhouse you win the thread!

chunky I agree if you’re smoking weed every daytime (In fact I even had a big argument with dh over him doing exactly that) but today is a bank holiday! Loads of us wouldn’t be drinking or smoking weed in the day usually. Even in lockdown.

chunkyrun · 08/05/2020 20:18

@chunkyrun - ah, ok. I was getting worried I'd have to wait till 10:30pm when DS(14) goes to bed to pour a g&t

^^ yea Im not that uptight. Big difference between few drinks and getting wankered. there's noo convincing me that taking drugs during day while you look after kids is ever ok.

iklboo · 08/05/2020 20:22

I agree with you there. Mind you I'm pretty much anti drugs full stop.

Nogoodnickname · 08/05/2020 20:56

OP. You really don’t know if they’re getting drunk though do you?! Yes they may have displayed a whole load of alcohol on their FB but they’re not necessarily going to drink the whole lot in a night or a weekend! You can’t assume by a caption with a picture that they’re going to drink the lot and get completely shit faced! Yes they may get “drunk” but drunk for them may be a couple of drinks, but maybe they’re just displaying their vast array of alcohol aka boasting!!

Bluntness100 · 08/05/2020 21:05

I suspect they are posting with a sense of humour and just going to have a few drinks not get paralytic.

But crack on thinking they will ,so you can be judgey. Lock down is boring so you may as well. Gives you something to do.

I have a beer fridge and a booze cupboard, Last night i uploaded a photo of me with a drink stating I was starting the bank holiday as I meant to go on.

I had two beers.

You really can’t take everything literally.

iklboo · 08/05/2020 21:09

Is it just me thinking some people have a drawer full of judgey pants and matching hoiky bosom bra? Probably next to the pearls.

The level of defensiveness on this thread is very interesting.
