I'm just obsessed with this show but none of my friends are into it so I can't talk about it with them. I've watched the entire series like 4 times over. Ha ha. If there are any other GG enthusiasts let's talk!

You are my people.

I love Sookie and Jackson. They're my favourite!

Rory was always the nice, responsible kid and everyone expected her to do great things... But getting good grades in school and loving books doesn't mean you're destined for greatness.

I also get this and I think Lorelai had a weird thing where she put pressure on Rory by expecting loads of her, but then also was fine if she screwed up... I don't know, I agree with others that if they'd had a more standard Mother-Daughter relationship it might have worked better for both of them. (Although I love their relationship!)

cookiemonster5 · 08/05/2020 11:35

I just started watching this the other day when I finished the crown and Riverdale. Only on season 1 where Rory meets dale though.

InglouriousBasterd · 08/05/2020 11:43

Totally placemarking because I bloody love GG. Currently rewatching for about the 100th time. I first saw it when I was pregnant with DD and she was so nearly called Lorelai...!

Dean was awful - aggressive and stroppy, the way he treated Lindsay was appalling. Especially with the roast beef Sad She was so desperate to please him and for him not to be angry with her. Jess is great as he ages and I liked Logan.

I wanted more for Lane too. But I got the feeling she was happy with her lot - family, band, job she liked. Rory is incredibly realistic really - she was likeable and bright but that doesn’t always translate into an amazing career, and I like that it was reflected. Lorelai is self centred but I hated her behaviour at Thanksgiving over Yale. Emily and Richard were good parents, in their own way - they stood by her always, and I always felt she was cruel to them when they just wanted to be in her life.

I was thinking the other day (boredom!) about how Rory is quite unstable at Yale - dropping out etc. And I realised that Yale highlighted that she had a really weird place in the class structure - something that was highlighted at the dinner with Logan’s mum and grandad.

She’s a Gilmore, arrived on the Mayflower, but she’s also the child of a teenage single parent. She’s entitled to financial aid but has a Trust Fund and would be a millionaire when Emily / Christopher dies. Is she more like Marty, from a poor family and struggling to get by or is she better suited to the Life and Death Brigade kids? She doesn’t know. She’s a weird combination of both and it doesn’t work in that kind of society.

BarkandCheese · 08/05/2020 12:05

Rory has been built up by Lorelai, her grandparents and Luke to see herself as some kind of amazing prodigy. However she’s not, she’s bright and studious but she’s not particularly resilient or driven. In real life she’d be the kind of person who stays in academia far too long and although very intelligent ends up with a middling to non existent career because they can’t make the transition to real life.

TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking · 08/05/2020 13:29

I agree with so much on here, especially your opinions of the characters really shifting as you get older. This is why I love the writing - the characters are so three dimensional; it's really hard to just outright love or hate them.

I definitely related to Rory when I was younger to the point that I privately think of certain boys who came and went in my life as 'my Jess' / 'my Dean' etc.(!) but was really disappointed in her in the revival (although as others have said, it fitted her character in many ways looking back on seasons 1-6).

Team Jess and kind of Team Logan here (until the revival) but I suspect that if AS-P had stayed on for season 7 Logan would have been a lot less likeable.

By the way, where the hell did Odette come from? Why is Logan suddenly so invested in 'the dynastic plan'? So many questions.

...

Milo Ventimiglia, though. That smile. swoon. I'm not sure I'm basing this purely on cool-headed judgement of Jess's character to be honest...

TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking · 08/05/2020 13:35

Yeah, Dean is awful. He was only young, granted, but I truly don't understand all these people who think he was such an amazing first boyfriend. Got angry with her because she didn't immediately reciprocate when he told Rory he loved her, couldn't see any problem with The Donna Reed Show, generally acted like a controlling psycho and acting like him being a horrible person was the fault of poor, poor Lindsey who should really try harder to be Rory tread on eggshells so as not to anger him. Ugh.

TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking · 08/05/2020 13:37

I also so wanted Lane to get out and do something else even just for a short while.

I always found Zack a bit creepy... Just me?!

AngelaScandal · 08/05/2020 13:39

I hated what they did to Lane

TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking · 08/05/2020 13:43

"You are not the daughter I raised. Kims don't give up!" Sad

I still have hope for Lane once her boys are a bit older...

ScarfLadysBag · 08/05/2020 13:43

I rewatch it every year! Must be about time for this year's binge.

ScarfLadysBag · 08/05/2020 13:43

Lane got a shitty deal. I'm still mad about it.

ScarfLadysBag · 08/05/2020 13:44

And unashamedly Team Logan!

ScarfLadysBag · 08/05/2020 13:46

@MumNeedsTea I love that! We've got a Stars Hollow pavilion print up in our room Grin

TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking · 08/05/2020 13:54

Just going to leave this here.

Team Jess all the way! He was a bit of a prick as a teenager but was the only one who grew up and matured and seemed a genuine match for Rory and called her out on her bullshit.

WitchWife · 08/05/2020 14:34

I still have never finished watching it all (and then watched part 1 of the revival and thought WTF) so have only seen teen Jess but I loved him and yes @Lunawuna me too. He always seemed like he’d grow into a bit of a Luke albeit cleverer and more sarcastic. He had a good heart.

I don’t think Lorelai is supposed to be always right in the way she interacts with her parents, she clearly flies off the handle way too often. That being said, I think people find the way family behaved at the most difficult time of their life v difficult to forgive, often. No matter how nice they are later. And she clearly has an anxiety that her v v v different way of raising her own daughter - warm, fun, talking about everything, not having a stick up your arse - is being undermined by her parents who want to clone themselves in Rory.

Tbh I think Rory would have been happier and had a better life if she’d stayed at the local school. Just me?

Lane’s husband is loathsome. I’d rather she’d stayed single and happy than that lout.

Quarantimespringclean · 08/05/2020 15:25

Lorelai is a horrible person. I’d go so far as to say she’s a narcissist. Delightful when things are going her way and she is the centre of attention and a petulant brat if she is thwarted or overlooked. But with Emily as her primary carer it’s hardly surprising.

Rory isn’t much better, a lot of faux sweetness hides her astonishing arrogance.

My favourite character is `Mrs Kim. when we first meet her she is the controlling mother from hell with no social skills and a determination than Lane will do exactly what she is told. But as the story progresses she develops an understanding that Lane has chosen a different path to her and does whatever she can to support her. She doesn’t cut her off and refuse to speak to her for months on end. Unlike Lorelai she’s not fixated on being popular and good looking or Lane’s BFF but genuinely wants to do her best for her daughter always.

Lunawuna · 08/05/2020 15:39

Hmm I don't know about that. Part of the thing about her getting into Chilton in the first episode is that she's the bookish weirdo compared to the rest of Stars Hollow High. It was also probably better for her to end up involved with Emily and Richard before going to an Ivy League college too, it gave her some of the background to the WASPy culture there, rather than ending up in a situation where she needed to go to them for financial support for Harvard (or her not getting in to Harvard at all) and it all being totally new to her. How hard she found Chilton at the start probably meant she was coasting a bit at SH/big fish in small pond.

tigger1001 · 08/05/2020 16:01

Love the Gilmore girls. Will need to rewatch them again soon. Didn't enjoy the revival though.

I do think your view of the characters change each time you re watch. Loved the relationship between them

amusedbush · 08/05/2020 16:13

Just hearing the theme song soothes my soul Grin

I’m Team Logan all the way, though I ended up thinking Rory was a bit of a dick after the revival. She had her ego stroked by her friends and family her whole life so when she went out into the world and everything she wanted didn’t fall in her lap, she acted like a big baby.

Timefor45 · 08/05/2020 16:21

Yes. I wish I hadn’t seen it all before, so I could discover it now and watch all day long...how I wish we could look up Stars Hollow properties on Rightmove.

CHARLonodn90 · 08/05/2020 17:21

@Timefor45 Oh I wish! I did actually type in “towns like Stars Hollow!” He he. There’s a town called Essex in Connecticut (believe the town the show is based on). I didn’t know you could visit the set at Universal?!

I loved it first time I watched, second time I watched it I hated every single character. Lorelei is the most annoying character ever. Everything about her annoyed me. Maybe I was just having a bad day. And Rory annoyed me, and Luke annoyed me, they all annoyed me. Apart from Lane. She was the only one who didn't annoy me second time round. Maybe I should watch it for a 3rd time and see how I feel this time round

flipperdoda · 08/05/2020 18:47

I totally agree with the perception of characters changing with a rewatch/you having more life experience.

Like a PP I resonated with parts of Rory a lot as a teenager (and looked up to her) whereas I look back now and see a lot of flaws. Same with almost everyone actually.

As for 'teams'...Dean I liked on first watch, but knew even then he wasn't a good long-term match for Rory's ambitions. Jess treated her awfully, though I admit he grew up later on. Logan was always the guy I saw as the 'fun but not husband material'. So her ending up with none of them made sense, though the situation in the revival I hated.
