I'm just obsessed with this show but none of my friends are into it so I can't talk about it with them. I've watched the entire series like 4 times over. Ha ha. If there are any other GG enthusiasts let's talk!

I LOVE it especially the friendship between Lorelei and Melissa McCarthy’s character. And ❤️ Luke!! And everything that happens in Stars Hollow.

I do NOT like Rory much though, as PP said she’s described as v nice and sweet and beloved by all, but she isn’t actually very nice to people. She’s a shit friend to Lane (forgetting names as it’s been a while - her schoolfriend ) uses her grandparents, just a bit of a brat. I am forbidden from saying this near my friend who adores her though HmmGrin

My favourite of Rory’s boyfriends is whatshisname the naughty one

ineedanewbum · 08/05/2020 09:41

I've lost count of how many times I've watched Gilmore Girls. Love it so much and everytime I re-watch I change my opinion on characters. I used to think Lorelai was right about her parents but now I really think she was much too hard on them. They supported her through her pregnancy and when she decided not to marry Christopher. Also supported her in sending Rory to Chilton and all of her relationships so really were good parents.

The revival wasn't the best. Rory in particular came across as totally spoiled and expected to just be given everything she wanted rather than work her way up. Plus she slept with Dean when he was married and Logan when he was engaged. Yes I know that she was free and single and they were the ones in relationships but still wasnt a nice character trait. I used to love that Lorelai and Rory were best friends first and mother and daughter second but actually I think Rory may have benefited more if it had been the other way round. Still love the show and watch it all the time though.

BarkandCheese · 08/05/2020 09:42

I love it and my current user name is a quote. However if you watch it too many times you start to realise that both Lorelei and Rory are fairly awful people. My favourite character is Lane, but I really don’t like SPOILER ALERT how her story ends up. She deserved to get away from her mother and Stars Hollow and have her own life.

I’ve actually been to Stars Hollow, it’s the back lot of Warner’s studio in Hollywood. When we were in California we did the tour, we had a fantastic tour guide who asked if anyone had any particular show or film which was made there they wanted to know about, so obviously I said Gilmore Girls. I’ve got photos of DD and me sitting on the steps of the gazebo.

I binged it during a particularly stressful period of my life, so have very fond memories of it as a comforting slice of loveliness.

Genuine question for any Americans - does this sort of picturesque, friendly, non-bigoted, cosy small town life actually exist in America?

Or is it like Midsummer Murders in the UK, and only exists in a weird alternative reality that beams into our world for housing-porn and self-deluding comfort?

Coffeewithmyoxyg3n · 08/05/2020 09:58

Me! It's my comfort show to stick on as background noise, my OH always jokes about how it's all I ever watch. I watched it as a teen and always wanted to have that relationship like Lorelei and Rory, then every rewatch would find more and more flaws with them.

Still would kill to live in stars hollow and drink Luke's amazing coffee.

Coffeewithmyoxyg3n · 08/05/2020 10:02

@BarkandCheese Lane deserved better!!!

She is based off the creators real life best friend and was meant to stay with Dave but the actor left to do the O.C (also love Seth Cohen so can't get too mad) so they pushed her with Zack instead and ruined her storyline.

Emilyismyfavourite · 08/05/2020 10:07

Kirk was my least favourite, he was just so annoying. I liked Christopher although he was weak but he was charming as well.
I also liked Logan even if he wasn't always very nice to Rory but I wasn't so keen on him in the revival. Emily definitely was the best in that.
I learnt the other day Rami Malek played a pupil at Chiltern in one episode.

I would love to live somewhere like that.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 08/05/2020 10:13

@CHARLonodn90 watching it again now I do feel like Loreli is very hard on Emily and that Emily takes a lot of the blame when Richard is horrible-like the Yale debacle. my younger self/DD do not agree with this position I just see Emily as a creature of her world and she does try (and I know she wasn't great when Loreli got pregnant etc-I mean Emily now) I think she is really trying but Loreli can't or won't see it...

MumNeedsTea · 08/05/2020 10:17

Me!!! I absolutely love GG and first saw it in my late teens/early 20s (I'm 36) and have seen it multiple times since it's been available on Netflix Smile

I've been meaning to get this www.etsy.com/uk/listing/252245419/in-omnia-paratus-poster-vintage-retro?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=in+omnia+paratus+print&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&bes=1

I watched it in recent years and was confused about why people love it, kept waiting for something to happen, and wondered if we were meant to like any of the characters. Serial mistress and drip Rory, narcissistic wittering Lorelai who stonewalls people for years, shouty angry Luke, servant-owner Emily, the only alright one is Jess.
How boring to end the revival with a pregnancy announcement.
Makes sense that the writer of Mrs Maisel is the same as who wrote Gilmore, I wonder when watching if we are meant to like any of its characters, too.

MariposaPink · 08/05/2020 10:39

Me too! My dd and I watched it together and loved it. Emily was my favourite character whereas Paris just irritated me!

LunaLula83 · 08/05/2020 10:51

I watched it recently and never realised what a twat Rory was, especially in the reunion episodes

BarkandCheese · 08/05/2020 10:53

The Yale thing is Lorelai at her worst. The bit where she totally freaks out at her parents when she finds out that Rory has very sensibly applied to colleges other than Harvard and including Yale is awful. She does this during a thanksgiving dinner at her parents where there are other guests, then flounces out. Then later when Rory decides she actually wants to go to Yale she’s absolutely fine about it.

Emilyismyfavourite · 08/05/2020 10:53

Paris could be annoying but I think she was quite vulnerable as her parents were not very interested in her so she was always trying to better herself to get their attention. She seemed closer to her Nanny. I didn't like her in the revival, I would have loved to have seen her with load's of children being the kind of Mother she had always wanted.

CHARLonodn90 · 08/05/2020 10:58

@CoolShoeshine Ah you’re in for a treat! I’m envious it’s your first time! Ha ha.

Ooo I love GG! I'm Team Jess all the way...especially with how things ended up in the revival.
I adored both Richard and Emily, the revival wasn't my favourite but Emily's storylines were the best in it. The original writers didn't write the last season (...7?!) so it's generally not as good.
It's good to watch at different times, originally I wanted to be Rory but then Lorelei and now I'd love to be as sassy as Emily.

I never understood a) how did they eat so much junk and proudly did no exercise yet stayed so slim? And b) how did they have enough hours in the day? They had full coffee and breakfast mornings pre work/school and then for cinema trips plus dinner plus dances etc in the evenings!

CHARLonodn90 · 08/05/2020 11:01

@BarkandCheese Totally agree. Her behavior was disgusting.

CHARLonodn90 · 08/05/2020 11:06

It’s mad how opinions of characters change the more reruns you watch. I thought Kirk was massively annoying but now I have a soft soft for him. He’s like the town child. The ep where Luke goes and finds the last 12 eggs for him. So sweet! I even have a soft spot for Taylor but I do love Paris, she’s one of my faves. Her go to put down “Tie your tubes” LOL!

RabbitsGoneRogue · 08/05/2020 11:13

I love GG! Have watched it so many times..

When I first watched the revival I thought it was awful and Rory was really wooden - but having rewatched it I like it a lot more. Though fundamentally I think it’s such a sad story.
Lorelai and Luke never had children or properly sorted out their relationship so it’s filled with regrets, and Rorys flagging career seems a bit of a shame really. I don’t like that she doesn’t have enough self respect to ditch Logan and why they’re even in that scenario anyway given that he proposed to her - why is he suddenly happy to have her as his bit on the side?

Hedgehog44 · 08/05/2020 11:18

Yes! Have watched it all through three times. Must be due another go. I was disappointed in the new Year in the Life thing though.

MumNeedsTea · 08/05/2020 11:21

OP, thanks for starting this thread.. Feels like I've found my people Grin

I always found Lorelei a bit annoying, irresponsible and self centered. @BarkandCheese, totally agree! The Yale episode showed that Lorelei would do anything to go against her parents!

I'm team Jess! Rory and Jess would have been so perfect together!

I know most people don't like Rory in the revival, but I kind of understood why she was like that. Rory was always the nice, responsible kid and everyone expected her to do great things... But getting good grades in school and loving books doesn't mean you're destined for greatness. Life doesn't always turn out how you plan it and Rory with all her flaws in the revival seemed realistic.

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 08/05/2020 11:28

My thoughts rewatching it as an adult:

  1. Can't stand Logan and his friends. Also can't stand how entitled Rory becomes!
  1. I preferred Emily to Richard and actually felt really sorry for her sometimes.
  1. I hate what happened with Lane. I actually love Lane. :(
  1. Lorelai and Luke. I can't believe in all that time (by revival) they hadn't even discussed marriage again.
  1. Suki's kids. Who was the third?
Lunawuna · 08/05/2020 11:29

I love it! Totally agree that Lorelei is too hard on her parents, and the whole "Harvard Yay, Yale Boo" thing is a bit cringe. Her relationship with Luke is a bit sad too - it takes so long to resolve itself and like a PP said they come across (esp in the Revival) as being full of regrets.

I'm team Jess too. When I was 16/7 I would have been all over a Jess Grin

I know most people don't like Rory in the revival, but I kind of understood why she was like that. Rory was always the nice, responsible kid and everyone expected her to do great things... ^ This.

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 08/05/2020 11:31

I found Lorelai suffocating at the beginning but I got used to her. The whole junk food thing and being too skinny irks me in this day and age, plus a few other dated things. Still love it though.

DippyAvocado · 08/05/2020 11:33

Yes! Got into on my maternity leave 10 years ago when it was on E4 daily. Team Jess here too.
