Neighbours painting our fence?

CherryStoneTree · 02/05/2020 12:14

We are in a new build, fence is ours and marked on both deeds as such. Neighbours are aware it’s ours. Both owners.

They’ve started painting their side today. I know the law states they should have asked our permission first, but we can’t exactly go and speak to them/go near the fence today. Do we let them do it in spirit of keeping things civil/haven’t had an issue with them before. And as long as the paint doesn’t bleed through it’s protecting the fence?

If it's not affecting your side what's the issue?

UhKevin · 02/05/2020 12:26

I have never known of anyone asking permission to paint their side of a fence that’s not classed as theirs. Isn’t it just a standard thing to expect? Confused

PotteringAlong · 02/05/2020 12:26

Does it matter? Really?

I can’t believe you have actually asked this. What do you genuinely think people will say?

insancerre · 02/05/2020 12:28

How petty of you
Does it really matter?

ivykaty44 · 02/05/2020 12:28

what colour?

crustycrab · 02/05/2020 12:29

Go round and paint it a different colour next week. Just their side though

BikeRunSki · 02/05/2020 12:29

If you own it, then shouldn’t you be painting it on both sides to protect and preserve it? They’re doing you a favour.

If it really bothers you, go and speak to them from 2m away.

DianaT1969 · 02/05/2020 12:30

Is there a reason you can't stand a metre back from the fence and chat? What do you think is wrong with painting their side of a fence? How bizarre.

NeutralJanet · 02/05/2020 12:31

I'd like to know where they got fence paint, I've been to 3 shops and not found any.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/05/2020 12:31

I had a new fence put up, after it fell down in the winter. We are both HA, they painted their side, im waiting to paint mine. Did they ask, nope but its their side.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/05/2020 12:32

Fences don't need painting but if someone does paint one the paint often leaks through to the other side.

So it may cause OP some issues.

Nicknacky · 02/05/2020 12:32

Is there an actual law that you have to ask your neighbour first?!

What exact is the problem?

MegaClutterSlut · 02/05/2020 12:34

As long as it doesn't drip over onto your side I wouldn't have a problem with it. I genuinely was going to start a thread asking if I can paint my side of the fences, though they don't belong to me, without asking and I have my answer Grin

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/05/2020 12:34

To be fair, it isn't lawful for them to paint the fence if they don't own it. People have taken one another to court over it many times.

That said, what bothers you about it OP? Does it affect the appearance on your own side? If not and there is no reason I'd probably leave it to avoid the argument. It can't be unpainted can it. They should have asked but really, is there any tangible harm?

AnnofPeeves · 02/05/2020 12:34

Is this the first time you've owned a property? It really is entirely normal for neighbours to paint their side of the fence without asking. If you said anything, you would look bonkers.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/05/2020 12:35

Paint came through to my side, quite like their colour too lol.

HappyHammy · 02/05/2020 12:35

You cannot paint someones fence without their permission. Look up uk fence law. If it leaks through then they are liable.

AnnofPeeves · 02/05/2020 12:37

It might be 'law' not to but it is entirely usual behaviour to paint your own side of a fence.

Nicknacky · 02/05/2020 12:37

I’m so so glad I have garden walls and not fences if this is the kind of drama that ends up happening.

maa1992 · 02/05/2020 12:37

What's the problem if it's on their side?

imsooverthisdrama · 02/05/2020 12:39

It wouldn't bother me ,you've already said it's not leaked through .
I'm assuming they are painting it with fence paint not some lurid colour like bright pink .
It most probably be to protect the fence don't most people paint their own side of the fence .

wowfudge · 02/05/2020 12:39

They should have asked and possibly just don't realise. If the panels slide out of concrete supports, you could turn them all round, probably best done when they go out. That would confuse them.

daisymay133 · 02/05/2020 12:42

I wouldn’t dream of posting this

Ridiculous and petty - You can’t even see it!

Why do you honestly care? Genuinely?
