Neighbours painting our fence?

We are in a new build, fence is ours and marked on both deeds as such. Neighbours are aware it’s ours. Both owners.

They’ve started painting their side today. I know the law states they should have asked our permission first, but we can’t exactly go and speak to them/go near the fence today. Do we let them do it in spirit of keeping things civil/haven’t had an issue with them before. And as long as the paint doesn’t bleed through it’s protecting the fence?

Yet on the puddles thread everyone is frothing cos the nutty neighbours are painting a fence that belongs to that threads OP.

If they know it's yours then though should have the courtesy to ask but as you own them and Havent bothered painting them they assumed that you wouldn't be bothered

IhateBoswell · 02/05/2020 12:45

Painting their side, how wickedly monstrous of them!

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2020 12:46

I also have never seen anyone need to ask permission to paint a fence on the side that faces them, of all the things to get wound up about, this must be the most mind boggling.

Why would you not wish them to paint the fence, do you wish to do it for them? Then go tell them you’ll do it.

That poor woman in the puddles thread also has a long running live parking thread going too on a different name, she must be drained at the end of the day!

I've never ever had a neighbour ask if they can paint their side of a fence. The only time I took umbridge to this was when I paid for a nice new fence, natural wood looking, no paint and they painted their side and the top. Made my side look weird. I got a piece of damp cloth, a ladder, and took it off the top as soon as they went out.

GaaaaarlicBread · 02/05/2020 12:50

Unless your fence is black and they’re painting theirs white and it’s evidently going to drip to your side I don’t see the problem , very petty

imhuntinghighandlow · 02/05/2020 12:51

I liked the parking one too! But after the name change fail when I looked up said name I didn't bother again

imhuntinghighandlow · 02/05/2020 12:52

Oh the swapping round of fence panels is genius and saves the OP painting theirs

crimsonlake · 02/05/2020 12:53

If you own the fence they legally they should ask. Whether you are bothered by it is another thing, lets hope the colour does not leak through.
Personally I cannot fathom this trend of painting garden fences, but each to their own I suppose.

Crimsonnightlotus · 02/05/2020 12:54

I don't think you would have any good relationship with the neighbour if you say anything. It's on their side, you wont see it. If the paint was showing in your side, maybe, otherwise, like others said, it's not something you should be worried about. Let it go.

MrsP2015 · 02/05/2020 12:55

Neighbours had their fences up when we moved in- our side was not painted.
DH painted them to protect them (as well as our side of ours) and so they looked better.
Neighbour was a bit funny and said she didn't know we were going to paint and would have to use the same colour her side now... even though the paint did not seep through at all...

I didn't realise people even asked permission?

We couldn't care less if or what colour the neighbours painted their side of our owned fence- we don't have to see it!

divafever99 · 02/05/2020 12:55

I do always ask my neighbour out of courtesy if it's ok if I paint the fence, didn't know it was the law though! I have no idea if she owns it or I do. It wouldn't bother me though if she did her side without asking.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/05/2020 12:56

Painting it a different colour or weather protecting it? If the former I would not be happy!

Oldestchild90s · 02/05/2020 12:58

If it's in your deeds then it is right they should ask first. Don't really see the problem in them painting it, but some people might not want it done so i would ask politely 😀

gamerchick · 02/05/2020 13:00

Ask them to do the other side? Saves you doing it.

I wish my neighbours cared about their fence. I've had to put my own up next to it before it completely fell to bits. Painting just wouldn't bother me as long as they did it all Grin

TARSCOUT · 02/05/2020 13:01

So long as its not grey I wouldn't bother.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 02/05/2020 13:01

It’s good that they are maintaining the fence for you so that it should last longer.

FinallyHere · 02/05/2020 13:02

What is the absolute worst thing that could happen because someone has painted the side of your fence which you can't see ?

Coughsyrupsucks · 02/05/2020 13:05

I wish our neighbours would pain their side, saves me a job and protects the fence. I wouldn’t worry about it.

madcatladyforever · 02/05/2020 13:05

Its your fence, they aren't allowed to paint it or grow anything up it without your permission legally.
If you think it's bleeding through or damaging it then you have every right to say no.
They can put their own fence up if they want to decorate it.
My neighbours once leaned over their fence and cut my washing line off it. I'd just moved in and didn't know it was their fence. They would lean over and chop my plants about too if they thought they were touching their precious fence. They were a pain in the arse.

Elieza · 02/05/2020 13:07

That’s good you’ve seen them so you can clean up any runs on your side immediately before they stain. M
It’s also good they are protecting your fence in their side at their expense!

I would usually mention to my neighbour that I would be painting for the runs reason.
They don’t want to come home from work to find ingrained runs of my colour on their side, which is another colour.
Speed is of the essence to clean it up!

BeeFarseer · 02/05/2020 13:07

Get the trebuchet out. This means full-scale war.

Itwasntme1 · 02/05/2020 13:07

My neighbour asked permission. I of course said yes. He painted it bright blue and it dribbled all down my side of the fence. Looked dreadful. I had to sand it all back.

Had a similar issue with development I was doing. Neighbour pained her side of my fence a pinky purple colour. Expensive fence. Arrived the day before open house to find the fence looked dreadful. Paint dripping down it. Had no time to fix it so quickly replaced it. Then repainted to fence for the next house.

She actually came out and shouted at me for wasting all her hard work😂😂😂

LunaLula83 · 02/05/2020 13:08

Oh god my fridnd did this. The black paint dripped through. She painted her side and the sides of each slat. It's looked hidious for the neighbour and it was their fence. Zero sympathy for my friend.
