Is there a ghost in my house?

Hi, I'm quite freaked out to be honest and, whilst I don't mind skeptics, I don't need to be told I'm being ridiculous. I'm really scared.

Bit of background:
As a teenager, I did stupid things at sleepovers with my group of friends (we did a seance o and we tried to 'communicate' with spirits). It sometimes 'worked' and sometimes there was nothing. My best friend literally horizontally floated in front our eyes when we were around her in a circle (no alcohol or drugs had been taken). We never broke it so I wonder if this is the effect.

Anyway, fast forward. There was a spot sometime after that in my room that I always 'felt' something watching me at a certain time (roughly between 2-4am). Not particularly nice but never harmed me. Now, four years later, I live with DH, 2 kids and his grandmother temporarily and three dogs. There's always been a 'spot' (next to the bottom of the stairs) that I've had that same feeling of energy at night (once in the living room too). Again, never been touched. Since the beginning of this year, I've felt it in my room. Pretty much continuously on and off, more prominent at night (this room is a lot smaller and the spot is next to the door). Anyway, up until this point, it's all 'feelings'. However, last few weeks DD (3) has been waving out of the living room door into the hallway. I asked who she was waving to and she said 'the man' (DH was in the room too). I asked where he went, she said upstairs. DH went but obviously no-one was there. I keep seeing 'it' out of the corner of my eye but definitely there (one year old keeps smiling and waving at thin air and the dogs bark at the same time he does that). Then, last night, DH was downstairs as he couldn't sleep (this is about 4am now) and came up (I was awake giving one year old milk) and he asked if I was calling his name. I said no and he was really freaked out, said it was clear as day. He even woke his nan up and she said it wasn't her. I'm really scared, I don't know what to do or what it is. Has anyone had anything similar or got any advice? I promise I'm not making it up but if you're sceptical then please just leave it, I'm scared. TIA.

ghosts are real

Based on what evidence?

Wanderlust21 · 02/05/2020 14:42

Defo check your carbon monoxide detectors just incase.

What feeling did you get from the dog? Like was it asleep on the bed or growling at you?

I think I'd open all the windows and doors in the house, start from the top of the building and in each room tell it to leave, read a few relevant passages of the bible, salt the four corners of the room and doorway and lastly the window ledge as you leave. Then do the same on each room, finishing at the back door. Dunno if the salt makes any difference but I hear it's less risky than burning sage.

Take the bull by the horns.
Infact, could you not phone a minister for advice? Maybe they could suggest suitable bible passages. You wont be laughed at, any person of god (worth their...salt? xD)knows there are things in this world that cannot be explained by man.

Not really a believer but this is scaring me a bit Confused, you have my sympathies.

SimpleKindofLife · 02/05/2020 15:21

There's a witch thread here OP, maybe ask them for some advice?

Cellardoor23 · 02/05/2020 15:51

I sleep fine and even I sometimes think I've heard some calling me just as I'm falling asleep, I'm sure someone knows the explanation for that

It’s called hypnagogic hallucinations. Half way between a dream like state and awake. People have reported hearing banging, the door bell ring, voices etc. They’re actually quite common. Usually happens if you’re sleep deprived. I’ve had it a few times and it can make me jump a bit!

Homestayer · 02/05/2020 15:59

Normally I'm ok with people believing any old shite they want to as long as it isn't affecting other people. In this case, it clearly is. OP is scaring her children to death and certainly giving them long term psychiatric issues.

Ghosts aren't real

Everyone on this thread going along with this stupidity and even egging it on, shame on you, you are a party to causing some children serious long term issues.

memblemumble · 02/05/2020 15:59

I’ve not come back because after I realised I said I didn’t have a dog, I knew no-one would believe me and I’m dealing with enough. I did mean to put the word black in there but I must’ve missed it. Out of the three dogs, only one is ours (not really relevant). Anyway, I’ve been here for years and I’m sleep deprived but I did change a few minor details in my OP so that I wasn’t identifiable as I’ve posted on other threads unrelated to this, such as how many years ago it was since I did stupid things, ages of DC etc. If no-one is going to believe me then that’s fine, MNHQ can delete these threads and I’ll take the advice offered by some posters- thank you to those who offered such advice. Even during lockdown, I have better things to do than make up this and post it on MN. I’m genuinely scared, although as I’ve read through the thread, it’s possible of course that sleep-deprivation and fear have heightened it or played games with my mind, distorted my thinking etc. I do stand by the fact that I believe it to be true, I know my experiences were (if you don’t believe in that kind of stuff then that’s fine). Thanks again to the helpful replies.

And to the points about my children- no, I'm not giving them any issues. They're very young (pre pre school) and all I meant when referencing them is that sometimes they'll wave at thin air in the house and when asked, they'll say there's someone there. I've never mentioned any of this to them, not that they'd understand. HTH.

Kids pick up on all this OP.

Dont you think it's funny that only the kids of people who believe in ghosts get to 'see' them? Why do you think that is? My kids have slept in spooky houses/woods etc loads and never 'seen' anything or been scared, because I've always told them the whole supernatural thing is a load on nonsense.

You need to stop this silliness, stop talking about it in front of your kids and start telling them it's not real before you mess them up.

Fosler · 02/05/2020 16:09

OP I believe you.

I was in a very bad place when going through my divorce and I somehow managed to attract something which manifested as the most dreadful moaning or groaning. I couldn't tell if it was animal or human. I was alone at the time it started. After about an hour my daughter came in and she very bravely searched the house. I was petrified but also very concerned so I sat down and prayed.

This lasted from about 11.15 am to 2.30 pm as it gradually faded away.

If my daughter had not heard it I would have doubted my sanity.

I hope you solve this. 💐

ABagOfPopcorn · 02/05/2020 16:12

To be fair I would have said they were hallucinations but I can't see how all of you would be hallucinating together like that, it could very well be sleep deprivation as I get hymnopompic hallucinations upon waking (hear/see stuff) it's usually when I'm more stressed out as well

The fact your kids are waving at things that aren't there though and your husband is also experiencing it seems to be more likely something to do with the house, whether that means it's supernatural I don't know.

I try not to be a big believer in ghosts but I have experienced those happenings when I was younger and I was with my friend and her mum and we heard footsteps walking down their stairs and they got scared and accidentally pushed me forwards as they legged it back into the living room, as I was edged out further into the hallway the footsteps became faster - like running down the stairs. I have never shit myself more than at that moment.

So I do think there can be elements of ghosts but I don't know how deep that goes.

Laslow · 02/05/2020 16:13

Sorry you're going through this op. A friend of mine had similar experience and the local vicar came and blessed her house and the activity ceased.

Homestayer · 02/05/2020 16:15

Laslow because getting a vicar in to bless the house definitely wont mess the OPs kids up at all will it? 🙄

Shame on you for encouraging this.

AzraiL · 02/05/2020 16:20

It doesn't really matter if you do or do not believe in ghosts. What matters is that the OP does, and it is this belief that is colouring the perception of her own reality.

OP I don't know what advice to give you, but I suggest you try whatever you can until something works and you no longer feel this presence.

Regardless of whether you believe it is sinister or not, it doesn't belong in your home or in your thoughts. The last thing you need right now is to have your life or mind dominated by this.

Good luck.

BadApe · 02/05/2020 16:23

You could just try not believing, see what it does to you

Fosler · 02/05/2020 16:24

If your DH gets a friendly vibe maybe it would be worth him asking it to leave?

Elieza · 02/05/2020 16:25

I believe you a hundred percent OP.

I’ve got things in my house too. Mine are my relatives and some others sent to watch over me. So I appreciate them. They aren’t with the house, they are here for me and will move house with me.

If they freak me out like hanging around my bedroom at night I ask them to please back off and keep me safe from a distance as I need a good sleep, thanks.
And it’s fine.

Yours haven’t done anything bad. If they were bad I think you’d know by now. They seem friendly.

Don’t worry about it. Your child will be fine. I’d ask dc “what’s the mans name” and see if you get anything you can look up previous owners of the house to see if anything interesting comes out. When kids get older they forget such things.

After lockdown speak to your local spiritualist church and see if anyone can come out and tell you who they are. You’ll be much happier if you know that. Especially if it’s your great grandparents or something just looking after you all.

Anyone that doesn’t believe just hasnt had the evidence they need yet. I certainly have. Many times. I’m sane and hold down a job. I’m not flighty or a weirdo or stupid or prone to making up crap. I’ve had others witness things too. That changed their minds also.

DuvetDay1212 · 02/05/2020 16:27

Ignore the nay-sayers. This kind of thing is something that has to be experienced first hand to be believed, usually. It changes you and your view of life. I've never seen a ghost but I can do some really weird stuff, and I'm not a very woo person at all. Agree that speaking to it and telling it you want it to leave could help, or the sage smudging.

If you've not been through this keep your comments to yourself. If it ever happens to you, you'll realise how difficult it is not to be believed. It can happen to even the most logical people.

Wanderlust21 · 02/05/2020 16:29

Why would that mess the kids up?
Children already believe in monsters.
Surely seeing that a human can fight them, is inspiring.

I'd rather my child be open minded and brave than not believe in anything and grow up to be some arrogant dickhead, that comes on these sort of forums and goes 'ghosts arent real'.

Besides, its not like op is telling her kids anything anyway. Theres stuff happening and she is dealing with it the best way she knows how. Let's see if you guys would do any better in her situation! Youd be shitting yourselves too.

BriefDisaster · 02/05/2020 16:30

I am on the fence as a believer.

On one hand I grew up in a very spooky house. Lots happened and my parents were constantly reassuring me 'there is no such thing as ghosts - its all in your head'.

After we moved out, when I was 16 they finally admitted that they had seen lots of things too but didn't want to scare me so just told me I was imagining it!

I haven't experienced anything since (touch wood). I did experience freaky stuff when DD was little but they were 100% sleep deprivation as DD did not sleep, at all, as a baby.

OP I would say move, but that is obvs not an option during present circumstances. I would be planning to move asap though.

BrandyandBabycham · 02/05/2020 16:46

What is the Bloody Mary mirror thing?

Homestayer · 02/05/2020 17:41

Funny how ghosts never show up in the supermarket, or crossing the road, or in front of hundreds of people.

Also really weird that we have had cameras for over 100 years, and yet no pictures or videos of ghosts have ever been captured that aren't obvious fakes or have really simple other explanations.

Wonder why ghosts only show up when people are tired, emotional, and in dark, scary places that put people on edge anyway due to our natural evolutionary aversion to the cold and dark.

It's almost as if it's all bollocks that scares children and gives them emotional problems for the rest of their lives when they see their parents buying into it.

I'll tell you what OP, spend a few hundred quid on some decent cameras and set them up on automatic all round your house. If its definitely a ghost then you'll be quids in wont you? First ever confirmed proof of supernatural activity. You'll need have to work again, you'll be famous! I'm actually jealous of you.

🙄🤦‍♀️

Elieza · 02/05/2020 18:24

There is a camera that shows people as stick figures. Sls kinect I think is the name.
It shows anyone you point it at as a stick figure and also people you can’t see (ghosts) show up as stick figures.
I’ve been toying with the idea of getting one. Dear though.

SimpleKindofLife · 02/05/2020 18:47

I see your point @Homestayer but this:

It's almost as if it's all bollocks that scares children and gives them emotional problems for the rest of their lives when they see their parents buying into it.

^ Is ridiculous!
