Are you cancelling or keeping your summer holidays?

Just that really. Feel torn between cancelling and taking a ‘wait and see’ approach.

We were due to go to the Caribbean in May. No cancellation yet from Virgin, the dates are available still to book!
I don't want to reschedule with them, I would prefer a refund. If tourism does return in any way, I want to get the best deal for my money. I kicked myself last year by occasionally pricing up our holiday and seeing I could have booked it for £500-£1500 cheaper, without the Covid outbreak.
I worry for my job, and I would prefer the money in my account tbh. Saying all that, I did earlier look at prices for the holiday at different times as I am so gutted to miss it. It was a special celebration holiday. Dh said if the flight is on, let's still go but I suspect there would be a lot of resentment from such a small island that they were forced into accepting tourists from the UK.
Basically I am firmly on the fence!

I'm hoping people will keep them and if offered go
That will take a few more off the 66,000 so fewer of us have to worry about being dead
You sound lovely.

timeforawine · 12/04/2020 11:18

Keeping. Hoping to go on it but if they cancel they have to refund me, if i cancel i lose money

The plane thing....Ive read about it quite a bit online. Probably because I read several times from several sources that social distancing will have to continue after lockdown. I was wondering how airlines would implement this. You’re not two metres from the person in front or behind you. Or across the aisle.

Seems some countries that use a lot of domestic flights are already doing this, and keeping the back three rows vacant in case anyone develops symptoms - probably more of an issue on long haul flights.

Padstow is always rammed. So are lots of little Cornish towns. How would they police that? Because if they literally police it by stopping people walking down the little streets, I can’t see how you can have a holiday there.

Had a week in Scotland booked for May half term, so moved it to early September. I'm reasonably hopeful we'll be able to go but I think overseas trips are out for the rest of this year.

Daffodil101 · 12/04/2020 11:29

(Owners of holiday cottages still welcoming bookings in August, at least one of them I dealt with last year is a local (lives nextdoor) so I don’t think it’s true that all locals won’t welcome tourists. How would the pubs and restaurants cope if they had to face a whole summer reliant only on local trade, when many locals are reliant on tourism for an income?

Given the strong message of keep away from cornwall/wales/Scotland/the lakes I don't think people will be welcomed in the summer

We're in lockdown at the moment and are not supposed to be moving round the country. In the summer things may be very different.

Wonkydonkey44 · 12/04/2020 11:32

Keeping ! Abroad at the end of August

timeforawine · 12/04/2020 12:19

@icelollycraving when do you go? Our Caribbean holiday was 8th May with BA and they have emailed us to cancel and refunded us 4 days later.
If you fly later than us maybe they haven't reached your date yet for cancellations? Hope you get your money back

HoldMyLobster · 12/04/2020 14:25

For those who are still planning to go abroad... does your holiday insurance cover Coronavirus treatment?

BarefootHippieChick · 12/04/2020 14:27

holdmylobster ours does as the holiday was booked last year, not that I imagine we'll be going anyway.

KoalasandRabbit · 12/04/2020 14:33

Hold Planning on cancelling but our insurance does cover coronavirus treatment abroad as booked last year. However, quite a few scenarios where it says only they will consider like if you are quarantined, if refused boarding on a flight. As we've got internal flights after main flight lack of insurance coverage out there was one of many reasons we are cancelling. Would be concerned about being quarantined / refused flights / infecting others if catch it who may not be able to afford any healthcare themselves. Until there's a vaccine we won't be going abroad.

sonypony · 12/04/2020 14:48

Keeping. Camping in the UK though. We were thinking about abroad too but won't be now.

icelollycraving · 12/04/2020 15:04

@timeforawine BA have looked to be good with customers during this, being available and refunding without hassle, Virgin holidays not so much.
They will only speak to you if you are due to go within 72 hours, currently around 3 months for a refund. If you want to reschedule, some Virgin air miles, whoopee.
If the reschedule was better, with an upgrade/ good pricing etc I would consider but really money in my account would be far better.
Not flown with BA to Caribbean before, only ever Virgin. After this crisis, I really wonder if Virgin will survive. Richard Branson was previously pretty vocal about airlines needing a bail out not getting it.

timeforawine · 12/04/2020 15:43

Sorry to hear that @icelollycraving, I would have expected better from Virgin. Hope you get sorted
