Are you cancelling or keeping your summer holidays?

Just that really. Feel torn between cancelling and taking a ‘wait and see’ approach.

AuditAngel,
It was on the French news, radio & TV

oohnicevase · 12/04/2020 08:19

Do you have w choice ? We are booked to go to Spain in July but I presumed you had to wait for instructions nearer the time . Are we able to cancel and get our money back now ?

roundtable · 12/04/2020 08:30

We're booked to go away for the end of July. I'm hoping we can go but we'll see.

DragonMamma · 12/04/2020 08:36

We are booked to go to Greece mid July. Balance is due at the end of this month.

We’ll pay the deposit and have to wait for a refund if it’s cancelled. We could rebook for next year but they aren’t currently offering free rebooking (TUI) for our dates so we are just waiting

User202004 · 12/04/2020 08:38

@DragonMamma if you login online and change your holiday I think you'll find you'll be able to do so without fees, I know people who have for August.

Dizzylin · 12/04/2020 08:43

UK holiday booked for the end of August, we're holding off with the hope we can still go.

SoundofSilence · 12/04/2020 08:44

August date for a yurt in Wales still booked at the moment because we love them and return every year and I want them to still be there when it's over. I can see us having to push it back a year nearer the time, though.

SimonJT · 12/04/2020 08:46

July holiday has been cancelled by the operator and we are being refunded which surprised me.

The Bingham Cup in August has been cancelled, but as we had Bingham Cup specific flights we can either go for a refund or have seats reserved for the Bingham Cup in 2022 so we have gone for that as hopefully I’ll still be playing.

KitKat1985 · 12/04/2020 08:50

We have a holiday to Majorca booked for late August. I'm not making any decisions yet as we're not due to leave for over 4 months yet and a lot can change between now and then. I'd like to go if possible as we've already had to postpone our UK break that we had booked for the Easter holidays until next year. I think it's about 50/50 at this point whether European flights will be running as reasonably normal or not by then. The flights are already paid for with Easyjet (who I understand would credit us back the cost of the flights if we need to cancel), but we don't have to pay the balance on the accommodation until 2 weeks before we are due to depart, so I'm just going to postpone paying any more money out for as long as is possible. We have car hire booked as well but DH has checked the T&C and we can get a full refund on that provided we give more than 24 hours notice, which is good.

Daffodil101 · 12/04/2020 08:55

I’ve read that social distancing on planes means keeping the middle seat of each row free and the back three rows.

So how will scheduled flights possibly run unless loads of people cancel?

Given the strong message of keep away from cornwall/wales/Scotland/the lakes I don't think people will be welcomed in the summer.

Daffodil101 · 12/04/2020 09:20

On the contrary, I think those places rely on tourism.

MogeatDog · 12/04/2020 09:22

Didn't book any and can't see us going anywhere. We have friends with a second home in France and if things improve dramatically we might go there - doesn't seem likely.

Ginfordinner · 12/04/2020 09:26

Our May holiday has been cancelled by the tour operator. I was expecting it and I know we will eventually get a refund.

Cat0115 · 12/04/2020 09:38

Waiting. Cornwall for 2 weeks in August in a lodge. Social distancing for adults will be easy enough but the dc are 11 and 13 and the type to go and join in with games with other kids. Our Lake District holiday last week gave us a voucher which I don't mibd
We holiday in the UK as a rule anyway.

MummaGiles · 12/04/2020 09:46

Waiting for our holiday at May half term to be cancelled. UK break next weekend already been binned, obviously.

Daffodil101 · 12/04/2020 09:49

We were considering Padstow but I can’t see how social distancing would work. Would we queue to get into gift shops? Find restaurants at half capacity? It would be a bit miserable

RiftGibbon · 12/04/2020 09:53

End of August in UK is still booked. Waiting to see what happens by end of May to try to work out what's best to do.

BarefootHippieChick · 12/04/2020 10:10

daffodil where did you read that about planes? Surely you're still less than 6 feet away from the people in front and behind. Also, if you're a family in the same household then you would be able to sit together I would assume.

Sounsociable · 12/04/2020 10:12

The last time we went to padstow in the summer it was absolutely rammed. (Like a mainline station at rush hour!)

Ginfordinner · 12/04/2020 10:26

Yep. We didn't see much of Padstow because we couldn't. All we could see was a sea of people, as in the photo. It quite took the enjoyment out of being there. However, we did manage to see a lot of uncrowded Cornwall, so it was fine.

Are you cancelling or keeping your summer holidays?
RunningNinja79 · 12/04/2020 10:53

We're booked to go to Butlins end of June (booked it last year). Currently the resorts are shut until mid May. We didn't pay extra for insurance so if we cancel it we will lose all our money. If they keep the park shut through our dates then they will refund. So no not cancelled and am just waiting. Haven't decided if to move the dates until later this year or just to go next year and have a year off (this should be our 5th year in a row). If they open the park for then we will go.

Also have Eurostar booked for France late August. The accomodation is free as the owners are family members. So if anything we may just lose the train fair. Obvs petrol has not been paid for yet.

I really dont think either will happen though I do hope at least one will.

Although MN seems to think no-one will be travelling anywhere for many years yet.
^-- exaggeration

GreyGardens88 · 12/04/2020 10:55

Have the first week of June booked off, keeping it booked off for now, if lockdown is eased I can take a UK break somewhere quiet. If not it will be cancelled. I have the last week of September/first week of October off and flights booked to Thailand. Holding out on that until September

TheNoodlesIncident · 12/04/2020 11:04

We booked our accommodation in Corfu for August. Will email the apartment owner to say we are waiting to see what will happen, and should it not be possible then to roll over our deposit for next year.

To be honest, what bothers me most is not losing our holiday this year (although we love the place with a passion and look forward immensely to seeing it again - it's like coming home), it's the worry about what will happen to the village we stay in (and all of them really). They depend almost completely on tourism and the money they make over the summer season keeps them going in the empty season. How will they survive this financially? I can't see the Greek government being able to bail out everyone in every little island... Sad

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 12/04/2020 11:10

Ours isn't until late August so adopting a 'wait and see' approach for now....
