Just that really. Feel torn between cancelling and taking a ‘wait and see’ approach.

I'm waiting. In the annoying position of having not booked a package so I can't get money back from flights until they cancel them (in August to the Netherlands so who knows if they will be cancelled or not) but the place we are staying will only do a credit not a refund. I can still cancel in the next month and only lose 15% of the accommodation cost (which is about £350) but if I do that and the flights go ahead I lose £850 on those too. If I do nothing I might be able to move both to next year (but I'll have to pay any increase in costs). Very annoying.

Uk Holiday park break in July - me and my friends managed to move it to next year. Savvy friend got onto it fairly early though, before the big rush. Glad she did. None of us feel like sharing mass swimming pools and such this soon.

August, uk camping trip booked. Haven’t cancelled - wouldn’t be a huge loss, £40 odd. Family run camp site, they can have my £40 if we can’t go.

America in October booked. That’s going to be the interesting one. Balance not due till September so I have time essentially to make a decision or have a decision made. To be honest I can’t make head nor tail of this whole situation so I’m just going to take it as it comes. Hopes aren’t too high though. That’s with BA I need to check their policy

Bedsheets4knickers · 11/04/2020 20:07

Not cancelled yet but will if we have to go with restrictions still in place . Just a waiting game

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/04/2020 20:20

UK holiday booked for end of July. Really hoping we will still be going but telling myself probably not.

TheGriffle · 11/04/2020 20:32

UK seaside holiday book for mid August. Booked last year and paid off in full in January. I’m hoping it will still go ahead. If not we will try and move it to next year instead.

NamedyChangedy · 11/04/2020 20:42

We booked a week in Cornwall at the end of August. It was before everything kicked off but we were hearing news of the virus in China so didn't want to risk foreign travel.

I'm hoping we'll be back to near normality by the end of summer, so not thinking of cancelling yet.

ALemonyPea · 11/04/2020 20:53

Meant to be going to a log cabin in the UK the last week of the summer holidays, hoping to still go away.

edwinbear · 11/04/2020 21:02

Trip to Montenegro cancelled by the travel agent, who are refusing to refund even though it’s booked as a package. Travel insurance and credit card company also refusing to pay as travel agent have offer a rebook or credit note - neither of which are any use to me.

Thailand booked first two weeks of July, balance not due until mid May so I’m just waiting on that one.

pointythings · 11/04/2020 21:29

Have paid in full for a week in Greece late August, so we're sitting tight. If it's cancelled, we'll take the refund. If not, we'll go.

Daffodil101 · 11/04/2020 21:40

Loads of replies, and I real split in opinion. Probably why I’m so conflicted.

Thing is, even in the uk, how will some of these little tourist towns operate in summer with social distancing? Queueing to get into shops? Halving the covers in restaurants? Policing the beaches?

Not sure I’d enjoy it much

Keeping mine for now. It's only on a little caravan site in the UK, they're shut at the moment and we've been told if they're still closed by our dates (end of July) we can transfer them. Were going to watch and wait for now.

SciFiScream · 11/04/2020 22:24

Supposed to go to Italy on 27th June (day after last day of term!). I don't think we'll be going.

Have booked with Tui (in 2018 - long story) but still to pay balance. Which was due on 4th April.

Couldn't pay the balance as shop closed (we waited for ages in hold to discover that).

We can't change holiday dates so won't be able to go until 2021 and I'd rather have our money back...otherwise Tui will have had £2,000 of ours for three years!

DippyAvocado · 11/04/2020 22:33

Supposed to be doing ferry+gîte in France in August. I am absolutely certain we won't be able to go but unsure whether to lose the deposit and not pay the final balance, or pay in full then as a package holiday we should be entitled to a refund if it is cancelled. We use the company every year so could accept a credit voucher but are worried in case they go bust before next year.

Ifeel1000yearsold · 11/04/2020 22:36

Hoping our UK based trip at the end of August will still happen.

Ltdannygreen · 11/04/2020 22:48

We are due to go to butlins and then on to Blackpool for a few days in July. We were thinking about cancelling butlins as we can get full refund but the haven is non refundable. We are now waiting till May to see where we are in terms of lockdown.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/04/2020 23:17

My trip to Lourdes at the end of July was cancelled, so have splashed out on a posh hotel in Cornwall I stead. Fingers crossed for that.

Butterymuffin · 11/04/2020 23:17

UK holiday in August so waiting to see, but I am hopeful.

CottonEaster · 12/04/2020 00:23

I am absolutely certain we won't be able to go

I am so curious to know what makes you so absolutely certain?

There's a lot of this negative certainty on this forum and I'm inclined to believe these views are not coming from the travel industry or even, the government. So their certainty is unfounded?

If you work in tourism you will realise that we are all hopeful and understanding that things will have to reopen to some level of normalcy sooner rather than later. At some stage we will have to accept living with the virus. As opposed to living in fear and penury. Living in an area which is 90% dependent on tourism, I cannot foresee a future for my area if we do not have a summer season this year. We are still recovering from the 2008 recession.

OP I have a holiday by ferry to France booked for late June and I expect/hope to go.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/04/2020 00:29

Waiting to see. One for July with the kids, one in August with a friend. Both in UK. Will pay up on the due dates as I think if I cancel I won't get a refund or be able to re book

HoldMyLobster · 12/04/2020 01:23

If it's any help, I live in a very touristy bit of the US (Maine) and July/August events that bring together crowds are already being cancelled.

I could see the beaches reopening, possibly, and maybe a limited reopening of hotels at best.

I think places like Disney, that bring large crowds of people together, are unlikely to open this summer.

HoldMyLobster · 12/04/2020 01:24

If you work in tourism you will realise that we are all hopeful and understanding that things will have to reopen to some level of normalcy sooner rather than later.

My family relies on tourism for much of its income, and no, we are not understanding that things will open sooner rather than later.

DippyAvocado · 12/04/2020 01:31

I can't see how we can go to completely shutting down the country (and the country I intend to travel to) and in 3 months be swanning about travelling freely around the world. Unless numbers drop really dramatically and testing keeps everything contained, it would seem likely that there will remain some restrictions and unnnecessary international travel is likely to be one of them. Also, how enjoyable would a holiday to a touristy area be with social distancing?

Maybe I'll be completely wrong and the pandemic will be over by summer. If not, I'm hoping we will have more freedom to travel in this country and we'll be able to do a holiday here instead.

MrFaceyRomford · 12/04/2020 01:46

Already cancelled. No holiday this year.

Barbararara · 12/04/2020 06:23

I’ve checked the dates for refunds/cancellations and don’t have to make any firm decisions for another few weeks. We’re booked for jul/aug. Realistically I’d rather not go. I think there’s a likelihood that it will be possible to go then and we’ll have to cancel and lose some money. The dc are talking about their plans and I haven’t the heart to tell them that it probably won’t happen.

Russell19 · 12/04/2020 07:44

OP mentions about social distancing on planes, airports, holiday destinations etc. Do we actually think we will be made to sit 2m away from people on planes? I think that isn't even an option. Surely social distancing will have to stop before these kind of things are up and running again? The police really can't be policing beaches and parks to check people are 2m away over the whole of summer surely?

(Just to add, I completely agree with social distancing at the moment, just surely it's not doable in the longer term when things reopen, schools for example!!!)
