Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

TartanTexan · 10/04/2020 14:11

Sorry with Ronnie Corbett - not good.

Dilisk · 10/04/2020 14:11

Well, a lot of people are watching Mrs Brown's Boys in the UK -- it gets consistently high viewer figures, far higher as a share of the TV-watching population than in Ireland. Who are they?

I'd include virtually every programme mentioned on this thread so far. I think I just hate sitcoms, the flat characters who get a catchphrase they just keep coming out with, the focus on pratfalls and humiliation, the canned laughter, and the sets.

I'll add Mrs Browns Boys to my list too. I excluded it as someone said it wasn't British, but I've just seen it's produced by BBC Scotland.

PenguinsOnParade · 10/04/2020 14:12

@JeanJackeys - Upstart Crow. I really wanted to like it too. Forced myself through one episode and deleted all the others I'd recorded.

TitianaTitsling · 10/04/2020 14:13

Another for Mrs Brown's Boys- first time l caught sight of it, I thought it was a parody- like "When The Whistle Blows" in Extras! It's bloody awful!

GreenGordon · 10/04/2020 14:14

Yes, upstart crow! Dire! Miranda, Not Going Out, all horrendous. In fact, I think sitcoms belong to a previous, less informed era.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/04/2020 14:15

Keeping up appearances
Mrs Browns boys
Mr Bean
The Brittas Empire
Fawlty Towers
Only fools and horses
My family

EyeShipMiceElf · 10/04/2020 14:15

That new one with the cafe and the Dr I think he is. Kate and Koji? Not 100% sure of the name. There’s no way the audience are watching it and finding it that funny, it must be canned laughter or they’re being paid to laugh.

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2020 14:20

Mind Your Language was pretty horrific.

SueEllenMishke · 10/04/2020 14:22

1066vegan I think it's important to watch things like only fools and horses and remember that some of those episodes are more than 30 years old. The cultural references, opinions and language are of their time ( in fact this is often mentioned when they're shown on TV now)

IKEA888 · 10/04/2020 14:23

My family was awful
Mrs Brown's boys... where are the people who like it.. it's just v disturbing

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 10/04/2020 14:24

I used to love most of these ten years ago by I watch then now and wonder why I found it funny Confused

Only fools and horses however I have never laughed at.

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2020 14:25

'Some mothers do have em, makes me feel ill'. 🤣

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 10/04/2020 14:25

But I watch them*

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 10/04/2020 14:26

What drives Mrs Brown’s Boys’ success is Brendan Carroll’s command of the live audience. The content isn’t my usual thing so I wouldn’t watch it on purpose but I’m a comedy nerd and every now and then I turn on the telly and accidentally catch ten minutes of MBB and just sit there admiring the technique and the way he’s captured the live atmosphere. I think that’s also a lot of the reason behind Not Going Out and Miranda’s success: their ability to bring a live standup persona to a sitcom.

For worst ever I’d put Babes In the Wood up for consideration. Denise Van Outen in ladette flatshare comedy. DH cites Doctors’ Daughters, which nobody else has ever seen because it was buried in an unmarked grave shortly after transmission.

caz114 · 10/04/2020 14:26

What was that one with Mrs Slocombe pussy- never got that whole program?

acatcalledjohn · 10/04/2020 14:27

Mrs Browns Boys
Last of the Summer Wine (DH loved it, so I bought him the box set and a travel DVD player!)
Miranda

Enjoyed:
George and Mildred
Man about the House
Benidorm

Anoisagusaris · 10/04/2020 14:31

The Royal Family is amazing though. One of my top tv programmes ever.

caz114 · 10/04/2020 14:31

@midsomermurderess , thank you, not remembering was driving me mad!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 10/04/2020 14:31

Grabbner that's Kate and Koji. I came on here to suggest that myself - it's absolutely bloody awful. Like Vicious, which a pp mentioned, K&K is packed with excellent actors but it's utterly cringe-making.

There was a crappy sitcom back in the 90s called Men of the World, starring John Simm and David Threlfall. The two of them even sang the feem toon Grin

I think there are a lot of really obscure ones that only ran for one or two series that were much, much worse than some of the more mainstream suggestions here, but they have been (mercifully) forgotten about.

AgeLikeWine · 10/04/2020 14:33

The Office. Patronising middle class media types sneering at ordinary people with ordinary jobs and ordinary lives.

caz114 · 10/04/2020 14:34

Yes the Office- another one I didn't get
