Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

Absolutely Fabulous. Never really "got" it, so didn't find it remotely funny.

I dont think Jonathan Creek was ever really referred to as a sitcom? Comedy-drama perhaps? Same with Fleabag.

newtb · 10/04/2020 13:19

Can't remember what it was called but had Michelle Dotrice as Betty and Michael Crawford as Frank Spencer. Made me cringe

Some mothers do 'ave em?

FloconDeNeige · 10/04/2020 13:20

My family. Absolute drivel. Agree with Miranda too.

Hold The Sunset.

How can a comedy be so dire when it has so many great actors in it?

Jason Watkins, Alison Steadman, Anne Reid, Joanna Scanlon and Peter Egan.

Dreadful. Confused

Mind Your Language

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 10/04/2020 13:25

George and Mildred, On The Buses, Love Thy Neighbour [showing my age with these examples). Red Dwarf and Steptoe and Son - agree with you @1forsorrow that I always found it so depressing that they were stuck in that house and life with no hope of escape.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/04/2020 13:25

I love Mind Your Language :)

bringincrazyback · 10/04/2020 13:25

Goodbye, Mrs Noah

Did you mean Come Back Mrs Noah? (showing my age now) If so, couldn't agree more, that was such a turkey.
There was a really bad one, maybe round about 2012(?) called Mad About Alice, that starred Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston. Think it was pulled after one series. Just so unfunny.
Absolutely detest Mrs Brown's Boys.
I never understood why Allo Allo was supposed to be funny either.

any of the racist ones from the 70s.

Love Thy Neighbour wasn't racist, it was more satirical because the racist character was exposed in all his stupidity. The black neighbour (the male one) was fairly racist himself, too... Grin
Till Death Do Us Part and Curry & Chips were abominably racist, though. And although it grieves me to say it because I LOVED Mind Your Language as a child, as an adult sadly I can see that the racial stereotyping in that one is outrageous.

MrsCastiel · 10/04/2020 13:27

Citizen Khan
Mrs Brown's Boys

My Family was reasonably OK when it started out but became ridiculous.

I loved the early series of Not Going Out, but it really has got utterly dire.

Yes! I nearly got it right :).

Mrs Slocombe and the Officers from It Ain't Half Hot Mum!

ByAppointmentTo · 10/04/2020 13:28

Mrs Brown's Boys. It is so, so bad. How on earth is it so popular?

ShirleyPhallus · 10/04/2020 13:30

Mrs brown’s boys is the worst thing in the world ever

I judge anyone who watches it

WotnoPasta · 10/04/2020 13:30

Some mothers do have em, makes me feel ill.

Mrs Browns shite. MIL loved it, one of the reasons she disliked me was my refusal to say it was the funniest thing ever.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/04/2020 13:30

It was awful, and maybe I am overthinking it, but I always thought of it as layered. Even as a child I thought that the culture that was really the butt of all the jokes was us British.

TSSDNCOP · 10/04/2020 13:30

Mrs Brown
Sorry

Shout out for my favourites though:
Porridge
The Golden Girls

bringincrazyback · 10/04/2020 13:30

the Officers from It Ain't Half Hot Mum!

I have a cherished memory of a gay male friend staging an extremely camp impromptu performance of 'Boys To Entertain You' in the chippy queue one night in the 80s after clubbing, it was a show-stopper to say the least. Grin

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/04/2020 13:31

SHUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUUUPPPPPP!

tiredanddangerous · 10/04/2020 13:32

My Family was funny at she start but they just let it run for too long and completely ruined it.

Agree with Mrs Browns boys...truly awful.

I feel like I’ve seen many unfunny comedies over the years but I can’t remember any of them now!

FredaFrogspawn · 10/04/2020 13:33

On the Buses
(I think that’s what it was called)

They were so unpleasant to women.

Grabbner · 10/04/2020 13:33

I caught an episode of some new one the other day with Brenda Blethin in it. Can’t remember what it was called but I won’t be bothering to find out :)

PerpetualCircle · 10/04/2020 13:33

Terry and June - so dull
As Time Goes By - boring
May to December- ditto
Goodnight Sweetheart- so contrived and unfunny

FredaFrogspawn · 10/04/2020 13:34

Richard Briers used to make me cringe in anything really though I’m sure he was a nice chap.

The Good Life
Ever Decreasing Circles

pinkrocker · 10/04/2020 13:34

Eldorado! Wasn't a comedy but man, it was funny

PenguinsOnParade · 10/04/2020 13:34

Vicious

Sir Ian McKellen. Sir Derek Jacobi. Iwan Rheon. Frances de la Tour.

On paper it should have been wonderful but it came across as really stilted and awkward almost all the time. Sad

AlunWynsKnee · 10/04/2020 13:34

MBB obviously but also Hi De Hi and You Rang M'Lord.
