Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

Babygirl66 · 10/04/2020 12:52

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

I don't like any sit coms .. is it normal to like them? I just don't find any of them funny .. 🤔

I don't really like them either. Some just aren't funny and some are embarrassing with how contrived they are. There are a few where I will crack a smile, such as Allo Allo, the Christmas special of The Good Life or Never Decreasing Circles (I was saying to DH the other day that the scary thing about that programme is that Howard and Hilda were probably only in their 50s!) but generally I wouldn't choose to watch any of them.

Blackadder was class though. You can't lump that in with the likes of Mrs Browns Boys!

Currently Not Going Out, I’m baffled why it has a Christmas special every year. It’s not funny, I know no one who watches it and I don’t think it’s ever been popular like Mrs Browns Boys (which I know is awful but pulls in huge viewing figures). I can only conclude Lee Mack knows where the bodies are.

Historically any comedy which relied on the aren't foreigners/other races funny, let’s laugh at them for their plots.

Used to be hilarious, until they got them together and gave them three kids.

My Family and Citizen Khan.

WisteriaLodge · 05/09/2022 19:15

Miranda
Last of the Summer Wine
Citizen Khan
Mrs Brown Boys

Candleabra · 05/09/2022 19:31

Gimme gimme gimme was awful

I always assumed the “jules and mimi” sitcom Miranda loved in SATC was based on that programme.

CormoranStrike · 05/09/2022 19:37

Mrs Brown’s Boys - no redeeming features at all for me

ThomasinaGallico · 05/09/2022 20:41

Does anyone remember Don’t Wait Up? An utterly dire sitcom about father and son doctors IIRC, starring Nigel Havers and, not sure, Graham Crowden maybe? I caught an episode once at my then boyfriend’s (parents’) house and really couldn’t see the appeal.

The first series was uneven, you have to admit. Lots of good ideas in it but it didn’t quite gel, like a precocious teenager’s end of term play. Blackadder really shone once they got back to storytelling basics.

I feel like there's a definite class divide in terms of the royle family. Those that grew up watching TV with their parents as the main source of family time probably love it.

The more middle class types who played charades and had discussions around the dinner table about politics maybe not so much.

It was Tony Britton, father of Fern. I quite liked it. Bit like 'After Henry' and 'Fresh Fields' - a bit hammy, but such a great snapshot of upper-middle-class Thatcherite England. Makes me quite nostalgic. (Not for Thatcher, obviously. For Thames TV and LWT).

Ah, Fresh Fields with Anton Rodgers and Julia McKenzie calling each other, "Darling," every two minutes. Me and DH used to watch it in the 80s.

Utter rubbish, but we still say, "It's only Sonja," when coming in after a pop to the shop.

Surtsey · 06/09/2022 20:22

Butterflies. I genuinely cannot think of a single redeeming feature.

LadyChamberlain · 06/09/2022 20:46

The Royle Family was just brilliant. Won loads of awards and rightly so.

Ritascornershop · 12/09/2022 17:07

Anything at all with Dawn French. I find her vastly unfunny. Vicar of Dibley had some good supporting cast but was ruined by the “aren’t I terribly amusing” schtick of Dawn French.

Right?!

She’s not funny, I don’t know how no-one else has ever noticed this.

Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em - depressing!

I think sitcoms generally seem dated now and so many just weren’t funny at all. Do weird now when you see the canned laughter and dull antics.

Underrated:

One Foot in the Grave

Top tier:

Blackadder
Red Dwarf

Sorry this wasn’t meant to sound snarky, more just as there isn’t a rl dilemma or what have you I don’t suppose it matters if it was started a while back :)

It was posted in chat, so it doesn't have to be about a dilemma... 🤔
