Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

Babygirl66 · 10/04/2020 12:52

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

Sorry was the dire Ronnie Corbett sitcom.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/04/2020 15:27

That's the one wowfudge, thank you!

Kalim8 · 10/04/2020 15:29

On the buses - sexist tripe
Mrs brown's boy
Steptoe and son, they are just so mean to each other and miserable

Love Miranda and Red Dwarf and the gentleness of last of the summer wine though!

Last of the Summer Wine. Reminds me of Sunday evenings and going back to school. Grim.

I just got really confused at the people posting "MBB" as I was thinking of Men Behaving Badly but just clicked that it was being used for Mrs Brown's Boys instead. In my defence, both have been mentioned in this thread though. Blush

GreyGardens88 · 10/04/2020 15:33

I loved Ab Fab and Vicar of Dibley. Never liked French & Saunders though, I thought it was pretty crap. Never saw the appeal of The Office, never seen Mrs Brown Boys

Womenwotlunch · 10/04/2020 15:34

Mrs Brown’s boys and My Family- absolute drivel

chomalungma · 10/04/2020 15:35

Mr. Bean?

How did Rowan Atkinson go from Blackadder to that?

Ritascornershop · 10/04/2020 15:36

I liked Emma Chambers and Trevor Peacock in Vicar of Dibley, just couldn’t bear the vicar.

Ritascornershop · 10/04/2020 15:37

God yes!! Mr Bean!! How could anyone spend their precious time on earth watching that?!! Very perplexing.

AdoptedBumpkin · 10/04/2020 15:38

I like Mrs Brown's Boys. It's good for the latter part of a chilled out evening. Blush

Lllot5 · 10/04/2020 15:38

Absolutely fabulous
Mrs browns boys
Royal family
Miranda
All crap
Love ever decreasing circles and rising damp.

GreyGardens88 · 10/04/2020 15:40

I loved Mr Bean as a kid, I think I wore the damn tapes out. I sometimes watch it now for nostalgia purposes

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 10/04/2020 15:46

I hated 'Allo 'Allo mainly for the whole "droopy middle-aged man is somehow a sex god to all the young, suspender-flashing waitresses, but he's always being hit over the head by his dragon-like wife" thing. I don't know if it was supposed to be a parody of something but it didn't work for me.

ACupOfCoffee · 10/04/2020 15:47

There was also a really shit ITV one set in a hardware shop, with Martin Freeman and Reg Holdsworth out of Corrie.

I was in the audience for the filming of one of the episodes. They had to do what seemed like a dozen takes of a particular scene, and it wasn't funny the first time. One of the longest evenings of my life!

CheerfulBunny · 10/04/2020 15:47

I can't stand anything by Carla Lane, particularly Bread. Everyone speaks in embittered monologues and no one talks like that in real life.
I think Mrs Brown's Boys appeals to older people. My late Dad loved it. I cannot bear it.
I adore Phoenix Nights and Still Game but I'm aware no one else I know gets them.

ACupOfCoffee · 10/04/2020 15:50

Re: Mr Bean it worries me that people in other countries might think that Mr Bean is the epitome of British comedy. I think it is (or was) shown a lot in many non English-speaking countries because it is mainly visual with very little dialogue.

Dowser · 10/04/2020 15:55

I never got the humour in it ain’t half hot mum
Much preferred the gentler dads army

Dowser · 10/04/2020 15:56

I don’t think I’m a sit com type of person
There’s so many I haven’t seen / couldn’t bear to watch

Babygirl66 · 10/04/2020 16:04

I have to say I completely agree with a lot of these Suggestions.

these are the ones I really dislike:

  1. Red dwarf: Just never found the appeal. tried one episode and found it extremely boring and not funny.
  2. Plebs: I am not a fan of crass and sex humour and just find it way too crude for my linking. I also think a lot of it is just for Shock value.
  3. Inbetweeners: generally the same reason why I don’t like plebs, however another issue I have with Inbetweeners, is that it massively stereotypes young men as reckless, sex obsessed and with no feelings for Authority. As a young person myself I can insure you that the average 17 year old male, is not like that
  4. The Catherine Tate Show: something about it makes me cringe.
  5. Horrible Histories: also makes me cringe. I don’t know why, my sister and father found it brilliant but i never liked it (Bar a few of the songs). I hated it as a child as well.
  6. Maranda: never saw what everyone else found so hilarious and from going by previous posts, I think people are beginning to wonder how they found it funny in the first place.
  7. The gone wrong show: I can’t tell you how much I fucking hate that show! I don’t think they are funny. They do the exact same thing every week. I hated the play as well.

As for things such as My Family, Mrs Brown Boys ect I think there main problem Is that they have ran for far too long. These programs was generally good in the first couple of seasons, however when you get to season 150 you do begin to wonder if it is time that the plug was pulled!

I think Mrs Brown’s Boys is a very marmite show - I love it, dh hates it.

I cannot abide Fawlty Towers - shouty John Cleese being unfunny and a bit of a bully.

Outnumbered also annoys the snot out of me, because I am infuriated by how ineffectual,p the parents are and, as a result, how annoyingly precocious and vile the children are.

I think that the sitcoms that work are the ones where the writers like the characters - they are funny, but affectionately so - and where the action isn’t stupidly contrived - dinnerladies is the perfect example - Victoria Wood clearly really likes the characters - and doesn’t make them do stupid, out-of-character things for the sake of the comedy value.

gingerbreadslice · 10/04/2020 16:18

I'm so happy that no one has put Gavin and Stacy here or IT crowd.
I do like on the busses though I feel embarrassed to say that!

Quarantimespringclean · 10/04/2020 16:26

One foot in the Grave
On the Buses

MrsCastiel · 10/04/2020 16:28

Well, a lot of peoplearewatching Mrs Brown's Boys in the UK -- it gets consistently high viewer figures, far higher as a share of the TV-watching population than in Ireland. Who are they?

Everyone I know IRL Loves MBB.

I get irrationally angry if any of my relatives put it on while I'm in their company.

My OH made me watch an episode once, to prove to me that it is funny. It wasn't. I half smirked at a really silly joke and the bastard caught me, he was all high and mighty that I'd laughed at MBB. I didn't laugh, it was a joke that came out of nowhere and caught me off guard resulting in a smirk.

Git.

Farheatarse · 10/04/2020 16:32

Not going out. First few series were okay when it was set in the London flat. Since they changed it to a family home setting it’s terrible.
The wife character is awful, says every line with a horrible sneary tone, it’s impossible to believe her and Lee Mack character are married.
The child actors are terrible too. Can’t watch it.
