Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

My brother made me watch something with David T in it , I think he was a watchman or groundskeeper , donkeys years old

If you mean David Thewlis, that was Valentine Park. It was toe curlingly bad!

Anyone remember one about a young policeman called "Rosie". Utter shite.

Anyone remember one about a young policeman called "Rosie". Utter shite Yes and I remember the themetune to that one too........

"His Mother wants to run his life , his girlfriend wants to be the wife"

I mixed David Threlfall (Frank from Shameless ) up with David Thewlis ( who was bloody brllliant as the horrible creepy pimp in Prime Suspect (?3) .

Yes park not a Night Watchman ( I could only cope with one episode it was bad Grin )

Can I offer up "Bad Move " with Jack Dee ?

I remember one from around 1983 called 'Piggy in the Middle' about two couples (I think) having affairs with each other - I used to watch it on an evening when my mum was always out at a meeting of something she belonged to, but then one night she was in for some reason, saw me watching it and was disgusted by the amorality of the premise, and forbade me from watching it again.

There was also one from the same era with a theme that began 'Nancy is a junior secretary, in an advertising agency' but I remember nothing beside the theme.

Duck patrol with the one who played Victor Meldrew and the one who was Barbara in the Royal family.
Some rubbish with Paula Wilcox as a single mum.
Mistress with Felicity Kendal. My mum was horrified it was meant to be a comedy!
Rings on their fingers.
70s and 80s sitcoms were dreadful.

The80sweregreat · 13/04/2020 19:44

I loved Bad move but I am a Jack Dee fan.
Lead Balloon was funny.
Open all hours old and new. I turn that over.

This thread has brought back many long-forgotten memories (including the theme tune to Watching). It’s also made me realise that I actually don’t like most sit-coms.

WhatEver600 · 13/04/2020 22:59

It was called ‘The Happy Apple’

prampushingdownthehighst · 13/04/2020 23:08

Not sure if it was technically a sitcom but in the 80s there was a programme called Help that had all or most of the McGann brothers in...I can only remember it because the scrummy Paul was in it but it wasn't very good!

Clawdy · 14/04/2020 09:07

Anyone remember Please Sir, with John Alderton? And one called Mixed Blessings, about a couple, one black, one white, whose parents didn't want them to marry, but they did? It was so unfunny, only one series I think.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/04/2020 09:18

I remember Please Sir - loved it - and its sequel The Fenn Street Gang.

Applejaxx · 14/04/2020 09:29

I used to think Some Mothers Do Ave Em was absolutely hilarious when I was little and would be doubled over in hysterics laughing at it. Of course it would never get made today as it was effectively making fun of a man with learning difficulties.

grafittiartist · 14/04/2020 09:33

Oh gosh yes- Everybody Loves Raymond- argh! Awful. So sexist and dated. Winds me right up.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 14/04/2020 09:53

I’d have agreed with people on The Brittas Empire. Only, I worked in a sports centre at the time, and my boss was Gordon Brittas.

Mind you, I have no taste. I loved the Piglet Files - not mentioned above as far as I can see, probably because it has vanished from the nation’s collective consciousness.

The80sweregreat · 14/04/2020 11:54

I loved the Brittas Empire!
There was one with Paul o Grady called Eyes down which wasn't very good.
Are you being served was also pretty bad.

Kazzyhoward · 14/04/2020 11:58

Are you being served was cringe-worthy even at the time. I saw a repeat recently and it was even worse than I remember it.

As time goes by (Judi Dench) - just awful, not funny at all.

New version of Open All Hours.

Kazzyhoward · 14/04/2020 11:58

Rowan Atkinson's Thin Blue Line - the only thing I've hated with him in it.

Fleamaker123 · 14/04/2020 13:13

I loved The Brittas Empire! The receptionist kept her children hidden under her desk as I remember?

Iamthewombat · 14/04/2020 13:21

I think that the golden era of the crap British sitcom began to draw to a close when the Americans started to show us how it was done, thanks mainly to Channel 4 showing Cheers, Golden Girls etc in prime time slots.

Never The Twain, Hi de Hi and That’s My Boy don’t really stand up to the comparison, do they?

Applejaxx · 14/04/2020 13:23

I loved The Brittas Empire! The receptionist kept her children hidden under her desk as I remember?

Yes and she was very neurotic and would burst into tears all the time!

Fleamaker123 · 14/04/2020 13:25

I just find the majority of them very boring and a bit depressing! The 70's and 80's were full of them, it was too much.
